Breeding Chihuahuas – Things You Must Know

Breeding Chihuahuas are not easy and it takes a lot of patients and determination when it comes to breeding successfully. This article will discuss some of the things you need to learn about before you decide to bring one into your home.

Potty training. Do it when they are young and able to make it into a routine. Chihuahuas are fiercely loyal to their owners and they do not like it when you are unhappy. Use this to your advantage when you are house breaking them and show your unhappiness as visually as you can when they do their business in strange places in the house. Once they relate the fact that you do not like it when they do this, they will understand and start to use proper places to do their business. Treat them when they get something right as Chihuahuas are quite loyal in this way. Once you show some affection, they will listen to you. This is important in breeding a high quality and housebroken dog.

These dogs are also very small dogs, so breeding them can be quite different from doing it with large dogs. When you do breed a dog, make sure you do it because you love or have a liking for the breed. This means learning all you can about Chihuahuas and how to properly take care of them. Doing it because you just want a dog is a mistake that a lot of people make when they breed Chihuahuas. Firstly, when you do breed them and have a pregnant mommy, you need to understand a few things. These dogs have pretty big heads in relation to their body size, so the labor and pregnancy of the mother dog can be quite hard.

This means that for a lot of breeders, they often have to bring their mother Chihuahuas for C-sections. And let me tell you, in the area of veterinary procedures such as this, you need a lot of spare cash when it comes to employing one of these procedures for your Chihuahua. An important thing about dogs you must know in general is that they must be awake almost immediately after the pregnancy, because if they do not recognise the dogs, they will most likely kill or even eat them. Chihuahuas also lose a lot of calcium when they go through their terms of pregnancy and labor, so you need to watch out for things like calcium defiance in the dogs.

Symptoms can include and are not limited to vomiting, eye movements which are unpredictable and muscle twitching. Because Chihuahuas are also genetically prone to epilepsy and seizures, calcium deficiency also adds to that. Constant trips to the vet is very important because vitamins and calcium injections might take place. Oral fixes like milk or vitamin tablets do not work in Chihuahua because of their metabolic rate and how their blood carries such minerals and nutrients.

These are some of the aspects that you should know about when breeding Chihuahuas. Of course there is a lot more to it than this, so talk to a vet before you decide to make that decision.

For people planning adoption, reading about German Shepherd information could seriously help them decide whether or not they are the ideal pets for them. German Shepherds, like any other breed of dogs, have unique physical attributes compared to other dogs.

And while German shepherds (GSD) are usually fearless, their temperament is still genetically inherited; making two dogs unique from each other.

Thus, learning more about German Shepherd information before going out and adopting one is a basic requirement since you have to figure out whether German Shepherds fit your current lifestyle. Below we’ve prepared a few pointers to consider if German Shepherds would be a good choice for a pet.

1. Size – German Shepherds are big dogs so if you’re looking for an indoor type of dog such as a shih tzu or a poodle, then you might better be off looking somewhere else. Before you even think about adopting one, take into consideration your property and the area your dog could roam freely. Dogs need exercise every now and then and you might want to make sure that your property could accommodate them.

2. Purpose – We have various reasons for getting a pet. Some want one for companionship. Others to have a ‘toy’ to play with every now and then. And a significant number prefer a pet for security. Knowing what kind of pet we want helps make choosing one easier.

GSD are big dogs that are usually trained as police dogs or security dogs. While they aren’t always meant to guard human safety, they wouldn’t be ideal if you need a pet to cuddle while watching TV or reading a book.

3. Time – Last but not least, is the time factor. How much time are you able to share with your pets? How much time do you plan to share? This breed is athletic in nature and demand that they be constantly played with. They enjoy mental stimulation, hence, you have to have a lot of time to give them that.

Reading more about German Shepherd information is vital before adopting or buying one. By doing so, you save yourself from any possible problem in the near future that you could have prevented with proper knowledge and information about your preferred breed.

Celebrities like Paris Hilton may carry their dogs in their Gucci handbags, accessorized to the glittering collar. But the recent trend in designer dogs seems to suggest that everyday people are catching this unfortunate trend.

Instead of simply buying diamante collars, however, people are demanding cross bred dogs with catchy marketing names. We’ve had the Spoodle, the Groodle, the Labradoodle, the Spanador, the Cavador, and the Retrievador. Now folks, meet the Roodle.

The roodle is a cross between a poodle and a rottweiler. They are the successful creation of a breeder from Melbourne, Australia. Fred Freeman has successfully bred 3 litters of roodles, some going as far afield as Hawaii.

Roodles have the crinkly coat of a poodle, but larger. They are quite stocky, and fairly big, with long floppy ears. Mr Freeman describes the dogs as having the intelligence of a rottweiler, yet docile and easy to train. His roodles are also non aggressive, do not moult, don’t smell, and are low on the allergy scale.

The idea of creating a non allergic dog was what started the original breeder of the labradoodle, Wally Conran. Wally was the Manager of the Royal Guide Dog Association in Australia at the time. Someone needing a guide dog who was non allergenic contacted the Guide Dog Association, and Wally successfully crossed a labrador with a poodle that fitted this purpose.

So, the origins of the labradoodle were quite in keeping with the way many of what are now considered pure bred dogs were created. That is, they were created with a specific purpose in mind.

But the popularity of the labradoodle has created a new set of problems. Namely, many unscrupulous people, some with no experience breeding dogs, and others with none, or little, experience breeding labradoodles or other similar crosses, jumped on the bandwagon. Demand meant that these dogs were expensive, supply was short, and this attracted many into this new field.

But breeding dogs, especially across different breeds, is not simple. In Wally Conran’s original efforts, not all labradoodles were low in allergy. And when it comes to trying to come up with new mixes, a lack of knowledge can produce disastrous results. For instance, breeding two dogs with similar genetic weaknesses can lead to the new litters born with an increased chance of the health problems associated with those breeds. Other factors include disposition. If people are expecting certain traits based on what decent breeders have produced, and they pay a lot of money for a dog that turns our to be completely different, those dogs may well end up being abandoned.

In the case of a dog bought to be low allergenic, this likelihood is higher, and this is exactly what is happening to many of the labradoodles being bought in the US now. They are ending up in shelters because they do not have the characteristics of the carefully bred stock the variation originated from.

And given that badly bred rottweilers can be very aggressive, if the roodle trend takes off in the same way, this could be a disaster all round. Especially so if a family with children bought one expecting the docile nature of the roodles created by Mr Freeman, and end up with an aggressive, large dog.

Labradoodles are not consistent breeds. And given that ten years was spent trying to get a rottweiler poodle cross, there is every indication to think that roodles are not a consistent breed either. That means that simply mating a rottweiler with a poodle is not going to automatically get you certain characteristics, especially in temperament.

Normally, contacting an association for a recommended breeder would solve this type of problem. But in this brave new world of designer dogs, this may not always be the case. Especially if the experience with the labradoodles is anything to go by.

The breeders at Rutland Manor and Tegan Park in Australia started their stock from labradors, poodles and labradoodles from Don Evans, another breeder who had discovered the breed independently of the Guide Dog Association. Those labradoodles were legitimate labradoodles, and they kept records of all subsequent breeding. They also determined which coats were low allergenic. They conducted extensive research and breeding programs to arrive at the dog that has become characterized as a ‘labradoodle’. Contrary to popular knowledge, they are not the product of exclusively mixing in labradors and poodles. Other breeds were used occasionally, for certain characteristics.

The breeders at Rutland Manor and Tegan Park began calling their dogs, and those descended from that stock by reputable breeders, Australian labradoodles, to distinguish them from the labrador-poodle mixes that were being indiscriminately produced. The mixes were not quality controlled, many were allergenic, yet people with allergies were misled into buying them, expecting not to get allergic reactions.

The International Labradoodle Association was set up originally to help maintain the quality and characteristics of this new designer dog. Yet they now are seeking to call all labrador-poodle crosses ‘Australian labradoodles’. If this is successful, consumers will have no way of knowing whether they are buying what they think they are, and what their health requirements determine they need. The end result will be more abandoned dogs being euthanased because of a careless association and even more careless breeders.

The history of the Goldendoodle dog

Since 1999, I’ve written about the Goldendoodle. There was very little information over the internet about the mix and this is why I began writing about the Goldendoodle in the first place.

Understanding Labrador Retrievers – Three Things You Can Rely on When Raising a Labrador Retriever

October 4th, 2010

Labrador Retrievers, also known as labs, are wonderful animals. They are a popular pet on television shows and in homes worldwide.

To absolutely understand the true nature of the Labrador Retriever, you have to have a firm grasp on the three most significant aspects that make up this animal’s personality and personality. These are:

1. Labradors Must Have Good Training: As hunters, Labradors must be able to follow precise directions in order to find birds. Even if they do not have a direction to move in, they will keep hunting without stopping. So, a good Labrador will actually take matters into its own hands in order to get the job complete.

These character traits are great for people to enjoy having a service dog that can take on its own in certain situations. On the other hand, it’s bad for dog owners who are incapable of providing absolutely no direction whatsoever. This is where most problems lie with new Labrador owners.

Many people see perfectly trained Labs at the park or walking with their owners and think to themselves “I want one of those dogs. They are so well trained!” Little do they realize that dogs are never born trained. It takes nonstop progressive commitment to specific training protocols, all based on a Lab’s genetic make up. This can prove too much work for some owners to handle and end up with nothing but problems and aggravation with their pet.

2. Labradors Are Like A Bowl of Fruit: Another important thing to understand with Labradors is that they are unusual and not every Labrador is the same. Labradors are like a bowl of cherries. So, you never know just what you will get as they grow up.

Most Labradors show the same interests, hunting, running, retrieving, and swimming, but oftentimes you may get a Labrador puppy that may absolutely hate water. If you are lucky enough, your Lab may not have an oral fixation, which causes many to eat anything they can get their little mouths on.

The one thing you can certainly count on is that every Labrador is unique. Through proper training, you’ll have a wonderful dog that will display the utmost in loyalty and affection until its last day on earth with you.

3. Labs Are Born To Hunt: Unlike many other hunting dog breeds, Labs do not just wait for its human hunting companion to tell them to retrieve fallen birds. These dogs have to be so attentive that they can mark the fallen foul on their own.

It is said that Labrador Retrievers are more conscious of their surroundings than other hunting dogs because of their heritage. When hunting, Labs wait for the right signal from their hunter when seeking out to find the prey. Likewise, at home, they frequently wait by their owner’s side for the next task or command, no matter of what it may be. It could even be a walk or even a treat. This is what makes a more needy for some pet owners.

Things To Ask A German Shepherd Breeder

August 22nd, 2010

You and your family have decided that it is time to get a German Shepherd and now the time has come to find the right German Shepherd breeder. This is a long process and if you know what questions to ask then it can be a little less difficult, but if you are unsure of what you should be doing then you could get in over your head. Choosing a breeder is extremely important and you need to take your time to make sure that the breeder you choose really is the right one for you and your family.

You will be talking to a lot of breeders so get ready for that right off the bat. Talking to just one breeder is not enough because even though you are bringing the dog home your relationship with the breeder will go on for a long time. You need to feel like you can ask your breeder for advice and if a particular breeder makes you uncomfortable then you need to talk to other breeders until you find one you feel comfortable with.

In most cases a reputable German Shepherd breeder is going to be affiliated with one of the national breeder registries. Find out which one the breeder you are talking to is affiliated with and check out that organization’s breeding standards. If you see some things that concern you then discuss them with the breeder. If the breeder you are talking to is not listed on a registry then ask them why they chose to not be listed and ask them what they use for breeding standards.

A good breeder does not allow you to leave with your new pup empty handed. A good breeder is going to supply you with a lot of care and feeding information that is vital to the health and well being of your dog. A good breeder will also see to it that you leave with a sample of your dog’s food so that you know what to feed your dog. If you do not get these things from the breeder you are dealing with then you will want to question that.

Many of the reputable breeders are offered free pet insurance policies by insurance companies to be given away to the owners of new pups. The insurance companies hope that you use the six-week policy to take your dog to the vet and see how wonderful the insurance is and extend it. The German Shepherd breeder just hopes you take the dog to the vet and is happy to offer you something for free that will help you with your vet costs. Ask your breeder about free pet insurance.

A breeder is a very important person in the life of your dog and your family. Take the time to really talk with prospective breeders and find out where they stand on things. Check out the breeding facilities, as this affects the health, both physical and psychological, of your new German Shepherd pup. Take your time when deciding on a German Shepherd breeder.

How to Train a Labrador Retriever – 3 Important Things To Know

August 17th, 2010

You are going to need to have some idea’s about how to train a Labrador Retriever, before you start your training program. You will need to think about what techniques to use, how long to make your lessons and how many lessons to have daily.

I have trained my very own Labrador Retriever and I will share a few important tips with you. Firstly let me say that you own a very intelligent dog and if you train your Lab correctly from the start, you will have many hours of enjoyment during the whole process.

Tip 1 – Lots of positive reinforcement
Think about it for a moment, when you are learning something new, you are pretty ordinary at it at first, right? So how can you expect your puppy or dog to be any different. You have seen dogs sit, or stay or heel many many times, but your dog has never seen or heard of it ever. Be patient with your Labrador and when he/she does what you want, then give him/her a treat. Never give a treat for a half hearted attempt by your dog, or when your dog just doesn’t do as its told.

Tip 2 – Don’t hit your dog
Dogs respond to body language or the tone of your voice. It’s enough for you to say “No” in a short deep voice for the dog to get the hint. They will also notice your body language isn’t as friendly as usual. Hitting or kicking your dog will just cause the dog to rebel and you will not get the best out of him/her, it could possibly bring out an aggressive side. The best way to discipline dogs is to catch them in the act, and deal with it then, firmly but fairly. This way they can associate the discipline with the act. I realize that dogs can be very trying at times, especially when they have just chewed up your best shoes – again. However, hitting the dog hours after the event, will just confuse him/her.

Tip 3 – Make sure your dog know who’s the boss
This one is a common mistake. Believe me, you are not doing your dog any favors at all by treating them as an equal. Simple things such as making the dog sit, before it is fed. Going through a door first before the dog or not stepping over your dog, if it happens to be in the way, the dog needs to move in order for you to pass through. All of this will send the message to your dog that you are the “Top Dog” and they will not challenge you, knowing that you are the boss.

Keep your lessons short, you will get to know how long before your dog loses concentration, but try about 5 – 10 minute lessons, depending on the age of your dog, 3 – 4 times per day. This is more than enough for you to train your dog.

Do you dream of having an obedient dog? You know you can have complete control over your Labrador Retriever, and never feel embarrassed by their behavior again. To train your Labrador correctly the first time, get your step by step guide and DVD on how to train a Labrador Retriever and put an end to any bad habit your Lab may have right now: Go to http://www.labradorretrievertraining.info.

10 Things You May Not Know About The Boxer Dog

August 14th, 2010

Legend says when God was fashioning different breeds of dog out of clay, he came to his final task and decided to create the most beautiful dog ever and call it a ‘Boxer’.   But this new breed of dog was vain and rushed to see himself in the mirror before the clay was properly set and bumped headlong into his own reflection.  That accounts for the flat nose characteristic of the Boxer, and also proves that God really did accomplish his design for the world’s most beautiful dog!  Here are another ten things you may not already know about Boxer dogs …..

The Boxer Dog Who Cheated Death and Became a Television Star Instead
In 1985, a white boxer dog called Bomber was snatched from a vet’s surgery by an animal nurse and later appeared in the UK television series, Oliver Twist.  It appears the dog’s previous owners, Tony and Elaine Chapell, decided to put the dog to sleep when they learned he didn’t quite fit new Kennel Club standards for his breed!  In filming he was made to look flea bitten, dirty and covered in sores.  Bomber even had a dressing room all to himself and was congratulated on giving a superb performance.  Well done Bomber, and shame on those who gave up on him!

A Boxer Dog With His Own Fan Club
A boxer dog called George was used in media advertisements in the early 1990s and became so well known that he eventually had a fan club all to himself.  George’s strange expressions appeared in ads. for Coleman’s Mustard and eventually the dog became a household name and even made guest appearances at public functions and schools.

The Boxer Dog With The Longest T-o-n-g-u-e!
A boxer dog called Brandy featured on Ripley’s Believe It Or Not due to her incredible 17 inch long tongue!  Brandy, from Michigan, USA, was bought from a local breeder in 1995 and her new owner was assured the dog would eventually grow into her l-o-n-g   t-o-n-g-u-e!  She didn’t and on television she was shown performing antics such as eating from a bowl 13 inches away.  Her owner, John Scheid, says brandy likes sunbathing and even gets tan lines on her tongue, but says the beautiful boxer is fit, happy and healthy, so her unique feature isn’t a problem at all.  She even has her own web site at: www.tungdog.com

Zoe, The Boxer Dog Who Came Back to Life!
Zoe’s owner, Cathy Walker, from Manuden, near Bishop’s Stortford in the UK, has been told by a medium that she is surrounded by all the pets she has lost.  That certainly seems true of Zoe, a tan and white boxer bitch who died several years ago, aged eleven.  The Daily Mail (November 6th 2001) printed an amazing photograph of the bark of a tree under which Zoe spent her last day, showing what can only be described as the image of a boxer dog in the bark. Cathy tells how she is a great believer in life after death and claims the image of Zoe has strengthened that belief.

The White Boxer Dog Who Received Hate Mail
To anyone who loves dogs in general, and Boxer dogs in particular, Solo was as beautiful as any other of her breed.  To her owner, Joyce Lang, she was more than just beautiful, she was a constant friend, a much loved family member.  But not everyone thought the same way and, surprisingly, in 1982, in Burgess Hill in the UK, an anonymous letter arrived addressed to Solo, saying: “I think you are the ugliest dog I have ever seen.”  What sort of human could write such nonsense is beyond most people’s comprehension, and probably the letter was intended mainly to upset Joyce, an objective the hateful writer most definitely achieved.  Letters continued to come saying: “Why don’t you get your master or mistress to take you for a face lift?”.  One even contained a paper bag which the sender said should be placed over Solo’s head!  When local newspapers heard the story the headlines proclaimed that beauty is always in the eye of the beholder and in Joyce’s and other dog lover’s eyes, Solo was beautiful.

A Little Boy’s Tribute to His Pet Boxer, Lance
This story appeared in The Faithful Friend (Writings About Owning and Loving Pets) and concerned dog owners in the United States who often loaned their pets to the military in World War Two.  Lance, a Boxer, worked with Dogs for Defence which eventually became the noted K09 Corps, and belonged to a family with young children, one a boy who wrote this letter to Dogs for Defence:  ‘My Boxer, Lance, was in the army since last June.  I have not heard anything about him since I received a certificate from the Quartermaster General.  The number on it was 11281.  I love Lance very much and want to know if he is doing anything brave.  Can you please tell me where he is and what kind of a job he does?  Please answer soon because I can’t wait much longer to know what has become of him’.

Origins of the Boxer Dog
What we know about the origins of most breeds, including the Boxer, is largely owed to early sculptures, painting and drawings.    In the Boxer’s case, a carving of a dog looking much like a boxer can be seen on a tomb in Arnstadt where lies Elizabeth of Hohenstein who died in 1368.  Flemish tapestries from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries show dogs resembling the Boxer engaged in stag- and boar-hunting.

German Origins
Boxer dogs became very popular in Munich where the breed is thought to have originated.  But the history of the breed has not been without controversy.  In fact the first Boxer Club in the UK was closed because of disagreements over almost everything pertaining to Boxers.  By 1905, however, the most enthusiastic followers of the German Boxer met to develop a standard for the Boxer which would be accepted by all.  The Munich Boxer Club drew up the standard which exists largely unchanged even today.

Boxer Dogs in America
The first Boxer dog in America was imported in 1903 from Switzerland.  The new owner of the dog was New York Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals, Irving Lehman who imported many other Boxer dogs.  The first Boxer dog registered with the American Kennel Club was in 1904.  The dog was Arnulf Grandenz, bred in America by James Welch of Illinois.

Boxer Dogs in Warring Nations
The boxer dog gained rapid popularity soon after the Second World War ended, ironically more prominently in countries formerly opposed in war with the Boxer’s most likely native home, Germany.  Listen to what Rowland Johns says in Our Friend The Boxer:  ‘The re-emergence of the Boxer breed has added proof that warring nations do not carry their antagonisms for long into the relations between them and other nations’ dogs.  Both with the Alsatian and the Boxer their popularity derives directly from the contacts made during a state of war.  In those two wars the adoption of both breeds by members of the British forces provided some personal satisfaction and uplift of the spirit in long periods of exile from home, family, and friends.’
