Chihuahua pups are actually a type of breed of dog that is named after the state in Mexico. While why they are named after that state is quite dubious, there seemed to be a connection with the dog and the state in Mexico as the first few progenitors of the Chihuahua were found there. As dogs, they are known to be one of the smallest size dogs in the world, with the biggest ones in the world growing as high as 15 inches in height.

Popularly known as handbag dogs, many women owners of the dog are often seen placing their dogs in their handbags. Now when you do take care of this dog, you need to know its characterisations. Chihuahua’s are known for their devotion, their fierceness in any situations and their most striking and famous personality.

They are one of the more curious dogs in the world and are highly inquisitive. Any sound, any movement under a rug or any disturbance in the house and they are up on their feet looking for the source, or if they cant, they will be barking to no end till that something comes out and shows itself. They also are a breed of dogs known as ‘burrowers.’

This means that they like to hide and snuggle under blankets, bed sheets, quilt covers, large shoes and even mats in the house. Owners should always look out for unusual bumps on the furniture or on the floor, as more than one Chihuahua has been reported to be injured by their own owners who had no idea that they were there in the first place. Also, when you do raise these

Chihuahua pups, you must understand that many owners report that it is not suitable for you to have young children or infants around. This is because they are highly excitable and will bite when disturbed or alarmed. While their bites are not lethal, their teeth are quite sharp and can cause bleeding when it comes to young children who come in contact with them. Also, younger children and infants tend to want to maul these little puppies or even hit them out of fun, and these dogs do not react well to these situations. Keep them either in a separate part of the house or under constant supervision.

Families are not advised to keep Chihuahua; not unless their children are above the age of 7 or 8. Health wise, you need to keep constant care of your dog as they are known to fall prey to sickness and disease like epileptic fits and even seizures. This is due to their neurological and physical make up. Regular checkups are necessary and good nutrition will ensure that you prolong their doggy life spans. Also, they can be hypoglycaemic and have very low blood sugars, so again, constant trips to the vets will really help their longevity.

These dogs are known for their friendliness and their devotion to their owners as well, so once you start raising your Chihuahua pups the right way, you will be able to enjoy their company for much longer.

Chihuahua — Choosing the Breed of Dog That’s Right for You

Getting a dog can change your life. If you get a dog that is compatible with your lifestyle, it can be a very rewarding experience, but all dogs require love, attention, care and training, so before you make that decision, ask yourself these questions:

Do I have time to give a dog the attention it requires? Do I have the ability to provide proper grooming, exercise and training for a dog? Can I afford the expenses that come with a dog? Do I have what it takes to be a strong pack leader? Do I want to buy a dog from a breeder or adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue?

If, after answering the above questions, you decide to move forward with getting a dog, it would be wise to learn about the different breeds and their characteristics, personality/temperament, possible health conditions and exercise and grooming requirements in order to make an informed decision.

This article is a basic overview of one particular breed — a Chihuahua. Read on to decide if this breed of dog is compatible with your particular lifestyle.

History/Background: The Chihuahua is said to be the oldest breed on the American continent and the smallest breed in the world. It is native to Mexico but likely came from the ancient Techichi dogs of the Toltec, crossed with hairless dogs of the Orient. It was named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua, from where it was brought to the rest of the world by travelers. This breed was used in religious ceremonies and is believed to have been sacred to the pre-Columbian Indian nations. It was brought to Europe at the end of the 19th century.

Physical Characteristics: The Chi, as it is sometimes called, is a tiny dog with an apple-shaped head and a short pointed muzzle. It has large, round, very dark eyes and large ears. Its body is stout, and it is longer than it is tall. The tail is curled over the back or to the side. There are two varieties — a short-haired type and a long-haired type. The various coat colors include fawn, sand, chestnut, silver and steel blue, black and tan and parti-colored. A Chihuahua weighs from 2 to 6 pounds and is 6 to 9 inches tall.

Personality/Temperament: The Chihuahua is a good companion dog with terrier-like qualities. Because of its small size, it makes a good traveler and usually loves outings. It craves attention, affection and petting and is intensely loyal, becoming very attached to its owners. It is a courageous, lively, proud and cocky little dog with a saucy expression. It moves swiftly to avoid being stepped on.

This breed may be slightly difficult to train but is intelligent, learns quickly and responds well to proper positive reinforcement training. It may require patience to housebreak. If the owner does not display strong pack leadership, this little dog can become strong willed and will develop other behavior issues such as jealousy and becoming suspicious of people other than its owner. This breed is not recommended for children as it is easily provoked to attack and may snap at them. If not walked daily, it may become yappy, protective, snappish and untrustworthy with children and people it does not know. The Chi should be socialized as a puppy to avoid excessive aggressiveness towards other dogs and being reserved with strangers.

Possible Health Conditions: The Chihuahua tends to wheeze and snore because of its short nose. Its prominent eyes are susceptible to corneal dryness and secondary glaucoma. It is also prone to slipped stifles (a knee injury caused by joint weakness), eye infections, gum problems, colds, stress, rheumatism, epilepsy, seizure disorder and low blood sugar. It tends to gain weight if overfed. It is vulnerable to fractures and other accidents as a puppy. This breed of dog is born with an unclosed section of skull which usually closes but can remain open throughout life and make it prone to injury. Life expectancy is about 15 or more years.

Exercise/Grooming: Although playing takes care of a lot of its exercise needs, the Chi requires a daily walk and also enjoys a good romp in an open area off leash such as a fenced-in yard.

The short-haired type should be gently brushed occasionally or wiped with a damp cloth. The long-haired type should be brushed daily with soft-bristle brush. Bathe both types only about once a month, taking care not to get water in the ears because of possibility of ear infections. The ears should be checked regularly and the nails kept trimmed. The Chihuahua is an average shedder.

Living Conditions: This little dog hates the cold and may shiver. It tolerates and even appreciates a warm sweater on cool days. It must be kept indoors and is a good dog for apartment life.

Summary: Chihuahuas make good companion dogs, travel well and require little grooming and exercise, but they may be a little difficult to housebreak and can become strong willed if not given proper pack leadership. So, now that you’ve learned a little about this breed of dog, one question remains — Is a Chihuahua the right breed for you?

Chihuahua potty training is a very unavoidable part of owning this dog, especially in a house. Unless you want to have a very smelly and very dirty house, you need to know the essentials of house training a dog. This article is more focused to the people who are purchasing Chihuahua dogs or puppies which have not yet been housebroken and are quite clueless on how to do it.

Firstly, prepare to be standing around alot and pushing your dog towards a specific area where you want it to do its business. You must be a very, very patient person, especially when you have a dog as flighty and as high strung as a Chihuahua. Because of their size and their metabolic rate, these Chihuahuas need to relieve themselves at about an average of six to eight times a day, and that is quite a lot. Potty training of these dogs should begin right when you bring them home and when they are puppies. It is harder to train a dog that is fully grown and used to doing their business anywhere they please.

Training them when they are young means that they get used to the idea that they need to go to location A or location B or their litter to deposit their giving’s. The thing you should know about these puppies is the fact that they do not yet have the muscles and control needed to hold in their wastes, so when they are puppies, they the d to do it at random times. This is the same with human babies if you realise, so you need to set some ground rules. Confine them to a certain area of the house at first so that cleaning up is easy and when you do that, make sure it is related to the place that you want them to do their potty.

Once they are able to smell their urine in the places that they should be doing everything else, it is much easier for you as a trainer to get them to house train. Next, you need to get into the psychology of dogs, as they do not think like us. Most of the time, they do want to please their owner so you need to use this to your advantage. Use raw and carnal emotions like telling the puppy that urinating on the living room floor is bad. Sooner or later, he or she will realise that what they did was wrong. In the end of it all, they do want to please their masters.

So when they do it in the right place, give your Chihuahua a treat. Once you are able to get your dog to relate urinating or defecating on different parts of the house with your unhappiness and disapproval, then you would have won more than half the battle. All you need to do is to show them where they should be doing it, and over a few weeks, you will have a fully trained Chihuahua. These are the right way for Chihuahua potty training.

How to choose the right breed of dog for your home?

If you are thinking about bringing a dog into your home you should be aware that this is a life changing decision. As with all major changes in lifestyle you should first do your research and weigh up the pros and cons to ensure you come to the correct decision for you and your family, and of course, the dog you eventually choose.

For the sake of this article I am assuming that the decision to bring a dog into your home has been made, and you are now trying to decide which breed you should go for.

To help focus your mind it is advisable to write down a list of questions and answers which apply to your current and (expected) future lifestyle/situation. You should also write down a list of dog breeds you like so you can find out more about them as you perform your research.  Be prepared to add additional breeds to your list as you are certain to come across breeds you have never before heard of. Doing so will help you make an informed decision.

Why do you want a dog?

Most people want a dog for companionship. For people living alone a dog can often be perceived as the perfect partner; it offers unconditional love and affection and all you have to do is feed, water, walk and love it in return – and that is very easy for a dog lover to do.

If you are the parents of a single child, a dog can be a great companion for the child and a dog can instill confidence in children with special needs or learning difficulties.

How much space is there in your home?

Think about the space you have available to you. If your home is fairly small, doesn’t have a garden or yard where a dog can be exercised and you are not keen on going for long walks, you should be looking at smaller dog breeds which do not require much exercise – Chihuahua, English Toy Spaniel, Pekingese or Bichon Frise could be ideal.

Just because you have a large house and huge garden don’t feel as though you need to have a large dog to fill it. You don’t want a huge dog such as a Bullmastiff slobbering all over that precious sofa or expensive carpet do you?

Do you want your dog to be a friend to your children?

If you have children in your home it is important to take a dog’s temperament into consideration. Some breeds, such as Labrador and Golden Retriever have an outstanding reputation as family pets. They can be poked, prodded, dressed up, chased and used as a plaything without ever becoming aggressive.

However, that being said, you cannot assume that these breeds (or any other) will adhere to stereotypes without proper training and exercise.

How much excercise can you give your dog?

And not just now, but in ten years time. This is quite a major factor to consider. If you opt for a breed of dog which has lots of energy and requires copious amounts of daily exercise, such as Doberman Pinscher, Border Collie or Newfoundland and you don’t deliver, you could be opening yourself up to a troublesome relationship.

In ten years the dog you choose will still require excercise, it won’t be as much as when it was younger, but again, you should be asking yourself if you will still be able to deliver? Will your  age or mobility be a factor you?

How much can you afford to spend of dog food etc?

Big dogs require lots of food, lots of food requires lots of money. Take into account your budget and work this into your list of questions and answers. If it is a long time since you last owned a dog, or you have never owned a dog, do some research into the cost of dog food and the amount required to feed to the breeds you are interested in. You might be surprised at how expensive feeding a dog can be.

How sick can a dog get?

Some dog breeds could cost you a lot of money in vets bills if you choose one that is susceptible to an array of illnesses. Doing your research before you buy could save you a lot of money and emotional stress. The last thing any dog owner likes to see is a poorly pet.

Don’t forget your holidays!

If you like to leave the country for a couple of weeks each year, you have to consider how the dog will be taken care of during that time. Kennels is a good option, but it is an added expense. Family members or friends are also a good option, but it is best not to take anything for granted.

How easy is it to train a dog?

Dogs that have been bred to assist humans are the easiest type of dogs to train – working dogs, herding dogs, hounds and terriers. These breeds have always worked alongside humans and follow commands very well.

Training a dog should start at a fairly young age and you should follow tried and tested methods. Dog training should only be done when a dog is in the right frame of mind; if you cannot get the attention of the dog it is best to have a break for a few minutes then come back to the task. 

Dogs that have been bred to fight or protect are often much more difficult to train and control.

If you are looking for a dog to become a family member or to provide company to your children, a Rottweiler is probably not the best choice for you. If you are a man living alone in a rough part of town, then maybe a Rottweiler is the best dog breed for you.

Choosing the best breed for you is about understanding your circumstances, expectations and lifestyle. Select wisely and you will experience a fantastic relationship, but make the wrong decision and it could be one of the worst times of your life.

The Chihuahua is a popular favorite of the toy dog enthusiasts. This spicy little character is extremely devoted and loyal to its owner. He may be reserved with strangers and a little aggressive towards other dogs, however, the Chihuahua can get along great with other indoor pets you may have. Keeping a Chihuahua’s aggressiveness in check while out and about will help keep him safe. Just because he’s small doesn’t mean he doesn’t think he can take on the big dogs.

Not all Chihuahuas have such a bold temperament. Some are very intense and will have an attitude as if they can take on the world, others may be extremely shy and timid. Either way, Chihuahuas are very protective of their owners and the rest of the family.

Due to their being so protective they can easily take on bigger dogs or other animals to “keep their family safe”. You can help manage this behavior by using a good pet stroller, which will keep your pet and others he may come in contact with safe.

Upkeep And Maintenance

The Chihuahua is a very excitable dog that needs a bit of daily exercise. But the good news is that these little guys can get all of the vigorous physical activity they need from running room to room in a house or a small apartment. But do not neglect outdoor walks and play time. The Chihuahua loves to roam outside and explore. They also become very attached to their family and want to spend as much time as possible with you.

When walking your Chihuahua make sure you keep him safe from other walkers and possibly aggressive dogs. You can keep him safe on busy streets by using a pet stroller. This will get him safely to the park or other running area, and allow him to still enjoy the fresh air.

In terms of living arrangements, the Chihuahua is an indoor dog and should not be kept outside. There is nothing wrong with letting him explore the yard a couple of hours each day, or taking a walk with him, but this should be temporary. Chihuahuas absolutely hate the cold and will do whatever they can find to get to a warm place.

Grooming is a minor concern if you’re the proud owner of a Chihuahua. Chihuahuas come in two types; short-haired and long-haired. Short-haired Chihuahuas need very little brushing, perhaps once every week or so. Long-haired Chihuahuas will need a brushing twice weekly.

Health Information

The Chihuahua has a longer lifespan than most dog breeds, living up to 20 years in some cases, with 16 to 17 years being the average lifespan for a healthy dog. Veterinarians suggest that owners of this dog breed get specific health tests for cardiac issues and knee problems.

The relationship that is established between the Lab and its owner must be harmonious, especially if the dog is going to hunt as well as be a household pet. There is a need for the animal to have directional links to all aspects of your home, and this can only be established by virtue of proper training. Furthermore, if the need to have constant canine companionship is one of your priorities, then Labradors are the best choice. This is not a dog that does well at trying to entertain itself.

There are a variety of hunting dogs in the canine world that have been bred to act independently of their masters such as hounds and terriers. With these breeds, little or no contact and instruction from their masters is required. However, this is not the case with Labrador Retrievers. With hounds and terriers, they usually lead their masters by tracking with sight and smell. Labs, on the other hand tend to “accompany” their masters and respond to commands and instructions.

Responding to a connected attention or instruction link between dog and master is how Labs were bred to behave. Failure to respond means that the dog could dive into the water, swim beyond the fallen bird, and just keep going without accomplishing its goal. The Lab that has been properly trained will not make these kinds of mistakes based on their inherent ability to attend to their masters and follow directions to the letter.

So now that we have covered the factors that determine why a Labrador is an excellent choice for the home, you need to be aware of the reasons why they wouldn’t be suited for your home and family. First and foremost, this breed needs to be connected to its owners and is therefore a very dependent breed of canine. In addition to being one of the more sociable breeds, Labs demand a lot of attention.

They do not do well if they are left by themselves for lengthy periods of time. When the Lab is left alone too long, it feels detached from its family and feels that they have gotten lost to an extent. So based on their nature, they must escape their surroundings in order to find their family and be back with them – ” or “retrieve” them to the family’s residence so to speak. However, the bottom line is that if you do not have the time to devote to this canine breed, bringing one home could be an unwise decision.

This need for harmony in the Labradors life carries over to the home front as well and is not reserved exclusively for their retrieving skills.  For the person who is in need of constant companionship, this is the ideal breed of dog.  Conversely, if you expect the dog to be able to entertain itself you will be rudely awakened as the breed thrives on canine-human interaction.  So that is one of the first things you need to be aware of when deciding if this is the right canine pet for you.

Hounds and Terriers are breeds of hunting dogs that can do with or without human interaction, so if are not capable of satisfying this need of the Labradors you would be wise to choose one of the other breeds.  Where Hounds and Terriers hunt by their sense of smell, the Labrador must have that human attention link in order to successfully perform its duties as a retriever.

Labradors that do not respond well to their owners commands may take of into the water after a fallen bird or squirrel (as an example) and swim past it – maybe even way past it and vanish from sight. The well disciplined and trained Lab does not often make this kind of a mistake because it is their innate nature to adhere to their owners commands.  It follows then that this canine breed is an excellent choice for obedience trainees as well as being service dogs (i.e. one of the better seeing-eye candidates).

So how will you know if a Labrador Retriever is the right dog for you and your family? For one, you have to have the capability as its owner to deal with a strong connection and dependency factor.  Additionally, it must have human interaction and leadership. Most breeds of dogs exhibit a propensity for companionship, but the Labrador demands much more than other breeds.  Whether they are indoors, outdoors, or a combination, they will not survive well physically (and psychologically) if left alone to their own devices, so you should be extra certain that you can handle this responsibility.

The bottom line with Labrador Retrievers is that if they are left alone for long periods at a time it confuses them.  They think that they have lost their family (or pack as it were) and attempt to escape their confines in order to hunt down their owners and be with them.
