Profile: Snoopy (Official)

January 1st, 2012

Snoopy: first appearance October 4, 1952 The wildly imaginative, supremely confident, world-famous beagle is a canine master of disguise. As Joe Cool, he’s aloof, unflappable, above the fray, the hip dog we’d all like to be. As the World War I Flying Ace, he engages in aerial combat with the notorious Red Baron. While pondering life from the top of his doghouse, he writes the great American novel, travels to the moon, and plots revenge on the cat next door. © Peanuts Worldwide LLC

Curly Coated Retriever Dog Breed Profile

Edit Article |

|

The Curly-Coat is a retriever of great ability in the water and on land. He is descended from a cross between the St. John’s Newfoundland (presently known as the Labrador Retriever) , the English Water Dog and the Poodle. He became extremely popular among the English land-owners of the nineteenth century and was prized as a multi-purpose hunting retriever with great perseverance on land as well as strength in the water. With the arrival of the twentieth century, the popularity of the Curly-Coat gave way to other retrieving breeds. Today it still remains popular in Australia and New Zealand.

This is a dog with great power in the water when it comes to retrieving. I have personally seen a Curly -Coat that has brought in without hesitation a wounded Canada Goose, no small feat. He is a natural swimmer if introduced to the water at an early age to water play. There is not always an inherent desire to swim, at least without an introduction, because the Curly Coat has also been used for years as a hunting dog on land.

The Curly-Coat is Black or Liver in color. The tight curls are an essential requirement, they must be a dense mass of small tight curls. This type of coat is extremely weather proof and water resistant and also is a protection against brambles and thickets. Every part of the dog is covered with these dense curls except the muzzle and the toes.

The Sporting dogs, especially the retrieving breeds, are usually thought of in terms of active personalities and very outgoing, to the extent that they are not often good watch dogs. The Curly-Coat however is not only a quiet and placid home companion but is also a good watch dog, giving voice when strangers approach.

It is a persistent hunter, does not give up and is eager and alert in the field. At home it is somewhat aloof but is calm and dignified. Of course a puppy, as with any youngster, will be exuberant and will get into things, but as a general rule the Curly-Coat has a certain common sense and placid nature that makes it quite content to lie about the house and sleep. It does not demand the attention that some of the other retrievers do.

This is a dog that is quite healthy in most respects. However there are some particular bloodlines that appear to have predisposition to Cancer and there is also a skin condition associated with pattern baldness. This is an outdoor type of dog and he does need plenty of exercise.

If he is to be used for hunting it is essential that he be adjusted to the physical demands and in good condition. If allowed to lie around he will take the opportunity. If he is to be a house dog, he still needs to get out and go for good long walks. This is a breed that has the stamina to be a “jogger’s dog” and he delights in participating in this activity with his owner.

Boxer Breed Profile

August 5th, 2010

The boxer is a dignified and yet playful dog. Often wary of strangers, they inspire incredible loyalty among those who have had one. This easy to maintain, smooth coated dog loves his people. He is highly trainable and wants to please, and like many active breeds is best kept busy to prevent problems.

The boxer is another German based breed. They are lively and can be high energy dogs. Each is uniquely and individual and although now not as popular as in the past, they hold a special spot in American history also.

Going back in history the breed traces to the 16th-17th centuries in Tibet. It is thought the Boxer traces to dogs referred to as the Bullenbeisser while other sources mention a dog called Bouldogue de Mida. They were used to hunt wild boar, and their ears were cropped to keep the pigs from grabbing the dog’s ears. A family pet when not pursuing this activity, they were bred with the early English Bulldog, creating the first Boxers in the early 1800s. They were once used for bullbaiting. Some of these dogs were all white, a color that is banned from conformation shows today and by the standard not an accepted color.

At the turn of the century they were brought to the US, having been established as a working and police breed. The AKC recognized the first Boxer champion in 1915 but it was 34 years later until the breed really gathered the country’s attention. For a time in the 1940s and ’50s dog shows were covered by sports magazines and others. Popular dogs were noted and followed and in the late 1940s Bang Away made a splash when selected as Best In Show at 2-1/2 months old. He won at Westminster and 121 Best In Show wins over six years. It is documented that at one show a questionable loss by the Boxer resulted in a riot.

Today by the standard these dogs are up to 23-25 inches with females slightly smaller. Balance is essential the the dog is presented as a well muscled athlete. They are fawn or brindle and can have white markings, provided not more than 1/3 of the coat is white.

The Boxer is an active dog both physically and mentally. Keeping them busy with games, regular exercise and play is essential. They’re nice dogs for families as well as single people. Some tend to be aggressive with smaller pets, especially cats, so it is worth putting special training into the puppy if you have other pets. They are intelligent dogs that love to learn. They can be somewhat independent thinking, and it is worth noting to balance insisting on obeying with picking your battles in training issues.

The Boxer is a beautiful, athletic dog with a great combination of gentleness yet the ability to rise to defend his family if need be. The unique way he uses is front feet when fighting (or playing!) gave the Boxer his name. This is a breed that can get 65-80 pounds, so it’s worth noting that training from early on is needed.

Health problems that can affect Boxers include hip dysplasia, aortic stenosis (a heart defect), Boxer cardiomyopathy, thyroid disorders, corneal dystrophy, demodectic mange (which is easily treated but indicates a weakness in the immune system), cancer, bloat, allergies and, in white Boxers, often deafness. Fortunately, many of these can be tested for and rule out genetic passing on of the defects. For those dogs that are affected, serious problems can result and it is best to know and deal with the health problems as soon as possible.

It is also worth noting that like many short nosed breeds, the structure of their head can lead to problems in high heat and humidity. For this reason particular attention should be paid to keeping the dogs cool and not exercising them when it is dangerously hot outside.

From a breeding standpoint a typical litter size is six puppies. Because of the health problems in the breed, health testing should always be done before breeding to insure you aren’t passing along traits that condemn the puppies to a bad (and short) life.

Boxers are still used for police K-9 work. They have the friendly nature, prey drive and power to effectively work in the sport of Schutzhund as well as for obedience, agility, or personal dogs. He’s been used as a war dog and a seeing-eye dog. They’ve been used as messengers and sentries, search and rescue and detection work. Some have been used for flyball competition and therapy dogs.

The Boxer has a tendency to love life – they will put all their energy into whatever they are doing. They can be incredibly persistant if they want something badly enough! They are affectionate and sometimes forget their manners and size when they get excited to see a friend.

Boxers with good care can live well into their teens. Grooming is minimal – occasional baths, trim toenails and general care. Being short haired an occasional brush down can help shine the coat and remove old hair and dander but the Boxer is for the most part a low-maintenance dog as far as grooming.

One unfortunate thing to consider is the advent of breed specific legislation in many areas. Even though it often doesn’t directly include the Boxer, many people with breeds that are affected have now taken to calling them “Boxer crosses”. The kick to that can come much later, as good Boxers have a tractable temperment but can be accused and grouped in with other dogs based on appearance. It’s worth making sure you have proof your dog is a *Boxer* depending on where you live and the local laws, which seem to change on a regular basis.

Famous owners reported to have had Boxers include Jodie Foster, Carroll O’Connor, Robin Williams, George Clooney, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Charlton Heston, Sylvester Stallone, Humphrey Bogart, Nat King Cole, Lauren Bacall and Shirley MacLaine.

In city popularity they are the dog of choice in Knoxville and second in DesMoines, Kansas City, Louisville and Omaha. They hold the third spot in Baltimore, Charlotte, Cleveland and Memphis and made the top five in a host of other cities. Nationally on the AKC list thay ranked sixth in 2007.

If you’re looking for a dog that can combine seriousness with a clown – active with a house dog personality – and gentleness with a willingness to protect his family whatever the odds, consider a Boxer. They are never dull and we could learn something from them in the zest for enjoying life! If you have a little room for a larger dog and an active lifestyle to keep them busy, consider a Boxer for your next pet.

Bearded Collie Dog Breed Profile Information

June 29th, 2010

The Bearded Collie is a lovely long hair dog and in fact the Bearded Collie is a working dog. It is strong and of medium size with a lean body that is long. We see a head that is broad and large. With a small muzzle that is strong. The nose is a feature that is square and great. The eyes are in tone with the dog’s coat and wide set setting the face into a friendly over all look. The ears are covered in hair and set close to the face. Their mouth has large teeth that should meet in a scissor bite. Their tail is carried low, and, unless they are happy or excited blends well with their coat. They have a double coat that is shaggy and waterproof; this covers their whole body, this includes their chin and this is where they get their name. This is probably the dog’s main visible feature. Their coat changes several times before you get the main colour with your older dog. Colours are blue, black, brown, fawn, all with or without white markings.

History: The Bearded Collie dog breed came from Briton but was first seen in Scotland. It is thought to be a mix of Polish sheepdog, Komonor and the Old English sheepdog. These dogs were used as herding dogs and in Scotland can be called “Hairy Moved Collie and “Highland Sheepdog” being wonderful working dogs, both with sheep and cattle. Nearly becoming extinct in the Second World War. Due to the great efforts of one lady a Mrs. G.O. Willison from Great Britain the Bearded Collie became resurrected. This breed first went to America 1967. They are still a rare breed. They have many skills within this breed some of them being obedience, tracking and performing tricks.

Temperament: The Bearded Collie dog can make a great companion for children and adults alike. With its cheerful nature, it is full of affection and is playful. If their needs are met, with lots of walks and high energy games this is a great dog to have, he will love being with his family but if left alone and not walked enough, it can be very mischievous, much to your cost. Daily mental and physical exercise cannot be stated enough. This dog is best and happiest knowing rules are in place and kept, having a clear human leader that is firm, consistent, and has natural authority will stop all undesirable behaviours. Obedience training is a great thing for your dog, and both of you will gain great pleasure from this. You will then have a stable and confident dog.

Health issues: With such a long coat, they can have external parasite infestation but with regular treatment this need not be a problem. The Bearded Collie dog breed can suffer from hip dysplasia.

Grooming: The Bearded Collie dog breed is, as it would seem, high in maintenance. Daily grooming is needed. It is best to mist the coat area you are working on before you start as this will help the hairs to slide rather than being broken. Tease out mats before they get bad. Check the dogs arm pits and areas that are high wear for mats as you work over their coat. Have your dog professionally machine clipped if you wish. Check ears and eyes daily and clean as needed. This dog can be bathed but is best to only do when needed.

Living conditions: Here we have a breed that is not recommended to apartment life. They need an average size garden and can happily sleep outside. The Bearded Collie dog doesn’t like to be confined and will need a place to safely run off its lead. This breed like its ancestor’s does prefers to live and be out doors.

The Boxer Dog Breed Profile

June 27th, 2010

You know that any new addition to your home, especially a puppy, needs plenty of attention and be cared for extensively. Before purchasing a live household member, get the facts about their routine, their everyday life and their traits. If you don’t, you may regret getting the puppy later. Mull over these things before your purchase:

First thing – learn about the puppy’s distinguishing traits and their conduct. If they have a lifestyle that is vastly different from your own, you may want to try to find another puppy. Boxer puppies want someone to pay attention to them at all times. If they aren’t, they’ll try to get it by doing something naughty. Puppies that are lonely and bored can become ill. Try to give it regular exercise to avoid any emotional and physical pain.

Second thing – boxer puppies like to live life carefree and may wander around aimlessly. Since they can be so active, it would be in your best interest to move any valuables from his/her path. Boxers make wonderful buddies for young children. While having babies/toddlers in the same room with boxers is fine, never leave them unattended together. The boxer may accidentally hurt the child.

Third thing – boxers are sociable and want to be around people and other animals. It is a very good trait to have in animals so you want to encourage that. When he/she is a puppy, introduce them to tons of people and pets. You want the socialization to be with the right kind of people so your puppy can know the difference as he/she matures.

Fourth thing – If it seems your puppy is very shy, get him/her socialization as soon as possible. Take him/her places with you including the pet store. Keep in mind that two females in the same household are a bit much because female boxers are quite antagonistic.

Fifth thing – Boxers make wonderful pets; but like humans, they do have some bad qualities. They can get stubborn if they are not shown the right way on how to act. Be sure to place your puppy in some sort of obedience training class. You want the best for him/her and you.

Sixth thing – Be sure to give your puppy all the exercise he needs to burn off those energy levels. If you don’t, you could have a rather destructive puppy on your hands. Take them for walks, give him space to run around and be sure you play with him/her at the same time.

Border Collie Dog Breed Profile Information

June 20th, 2010

Description: The Border Collie is a medium sized dog that is agile and quick. The dog will be 19 to 22 inches at the withers, and the bitch 18 to 21 inches. The weight will vary between 27 and 45 pounds, depending on sex. The Border Collie has two coat forms, rough and smooth. The rough has medium length hair. Both types have a hard, exterior coat over a dense undercoat. The coat of this dog is usually black and white, but red and white, black, and yellow and white are all acceptable. The Border Collie will live for 12 to 15 years.

History: The Border Collie is considered to be descended from dogs brought to Scotland by the Vikings. These dogs were used in their homeland as reindeer herders. These dogs were crossed with the local sheepdogs and eventually, the Border Collie was the result. This breed split off from the Collie in the 19th century. As the Collie is highly trainable, it has excelled at herding sheep.

Temperament: While the Border Collie will bond very closely with its trainer, it is not the best dog for a family with small children. The Collie loves to work at something, whether herding sheep or performing at agility and needs to have something to do to maintain its mental equilibrium. It should be remembered that the Border Collie developed as a working dog, not as a companion. It was used to working independently, unlike hunting dogs which cooperate with the human hunters, and has a more independent way of thinking. The Collie can easily be kept in a kennel (as long as its owner spends some time with it) and is not recommended as a companion dog.

Health Issues: The Border Collie is subject to hip and elbow dysplasia. This breed cab also suffer from epilepsy and cataracts. The show dogs are especially prone to various genetic problems. It is important that you purchase your Collie from a reputable breeder, who will have tested for hereditary defects. Progressive retinal atrophy is also found in the Collie.

Grooming: The Border Collie needs to be groomed regularly, especially the rough coated variety. Make sure to keep the coat free of tangles and mats. The Collie will blow its coat twice a year and at this time, the grooming must become more intensive. As most of this dog spends a good deal of time outside, it should be checked regularly for ticks, especially around the ears. A dry shampooing can be given when necessary.

Living Conditions: The Border dog is not adapted to living in an apartment. This dog is highly active and even a long walk every day will not satisfy its energy needs. A large yard, at the minimum, is needed to keep the Collie happy. As this dog developed as a sheep herding dog, it does not require the intensive human interaction that so many dog breeds require. The Collie will be fine if kept in a kennel, and working out with its owner at agility or some other active sport will satisfy its mental and physical needs.

Poodle Dog Breed Profile

June 8th, 2010

Correct Toy Poodle information is the key towards a happy and healthy life for your dog. What would happen if you took your dog outside to play in the snow not knowing that he cannot tolerate too much cold? What you think as fun and exciting can cause problem to your dog because you are not responsible and wise enough to know and understand what he needs and what he is supposed to avoid. If you are considering of getting a Toy Poodle in the near future, or if you already have one but what you know is still not enough to make your dog live healthy and happy, you might want to consider this Toy Poodle information.

History. The Poodle is said to originate from France but some experts believe that they may have originated in Russia. Germany is also often cited as the place of origin since the word “Poodle” has German origin. (The word “Poodle” comes from the German word “Pudel”, short for “Pudelhund”. Pudelhund means “splashing dog”.)

Appearance. Based on the AKC (American Kennel Club) breed standard, a Toy Poodle should stand not exceed ten inches at the highest point of the shoulder. Parti-colored Poodles as well as Phantom Poodles also exist but are disqualified to appear in show ring.

Temperament. The Poodle is an intelligent and active breed that carries himself proudly. They are very entertaining and sociable breed. As much as they are cheerful and friendly with other animals and children, Toy Poodles can be quite snappy when provoked.

Training. Poodles are easier to train compared to other breeds. They learn quickly because of their eagerness to learn in addition to their intelligence. They should be socialized as a puppy to prevent behavior problem and should be trained to control barking to avoid excessive barking when he grows older.

Health Problems. Toy Poodles are prone to ear infections, runny eyes, digestive tract disorders, thyroid issues and skin conditions. The are also likely to develop PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy). But despite these health issues, a Toy Poodle can live for 12 to 15 years, provided they are well-taken cared of and steps are taken to prevent these health problems from deteriorating the health.

The German Shepherd Dog Breed Profile

May 27th, 2010

The Alsatian, commonly known as the German Shepherd Dog, is a working dog breed that often acts as military dogs, guard dogs, police dogs, or search and rescue dogs. They are used because they can be trained in protection and obedience easily and they like to please their owners.

German Shepherd Dogs are large, strong dogs that have coats with either long or short hair. Their coats’ colors vary, but are mostly seen in tan and brown. However, there are some German Shepherds who are completely black or white. German Shepherds’ ears stand up erect and they also have long tails.

There are several lines of German Shepherd, all of which have different looks, behavior and skills. The international working line of German Shepherds are bred as working dogs. They are quite tough but their appearance varies. The North American show line of German Shepherds are bred for their appearance, which is unique to them. Their backs are more angled than a typical German Shepherd’s and unfortunately this can be bad for their backs. They are also believed to not have the working dog traits of the other lines. The international show line of German Shepherd Dog also is bred more so on appearance, so they typically look the same.

German Shepherds tend to develop great loyalty and are very obedient towards their owners. Due to their strong teeth and jaws, they can be trained to attack.
