With traits like these, is it any wonder the Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed of dog in the world? Since 1991, the Labrador Retriever has been the most popular registered breed in the United States, as well. They are gentle, affable and intelligent and considered by many to be the perfect family pet. They’re also known for their working ability and are the most popular breed of working and guide dog in the United States, as well!

With good medical care and proper feeding, you can expect your Lab to live upwards of 13 years. It is a healthy breed with relatively few major problems… but, like other full-breed dogs, they are susceptible to certain inherited disorders, particularly those of the hip, elbow and knee. While not as common in Labs as in other breeds, dysplasia is also a concern.

Labs are somewhat prone to dysplasia of the hip and elbow, especially in larger dogs. Indeed, hip dysplasia is the most common genetic problem affecting dogs of all breeds. Canine hip dysplasia is a general term for the malformation of the hip joint that eventually leads to arthritis. This malformation occurs when the two parts of the hip joint – the ball (femoral head at the top of the upper leg bone) and socket (the “dented” area of the pelvic structure) are misaligned or misshapen. Dogs suffering from dysplasia are not as active as they could be due to significant pain. Often, the only cure for dysplasia is costly surgery to replace the dysplastic hip joint.

Labs also suffer from the risk of knee problems. A “luxating patella” is a common occurrence in the knee that results in the leg being “bow “shaped. This abnormality can cause abnormal wear and tear on the joint, resulting in the development of painful osteoarthritis for some Labs.

The only way to decrease the prevalence of these disorders is through conscientious breeding practices. However, even the most vigilant breeders cannot eliminate these genetic disorders altogether. There’s no way of knowing whether an animal will develop a joint disorder later in life.

Regular trips to the veterinarian can play an important role in early detection and early treatment of problems. Unfortunately, the most commonly prescribed treatment for animals suffering from genetic disorders such as hip dysplasia is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. As with most pedigree breeds, there are certain hereditary conditions that can be a problem in the German Shepherd as well as other health issues that are more prevalent in this breed which need to be considered if you are thinking acquiring a GSD.

If you are buying a German Shepherd puppy it is important to ensure that you only purchase a healthy dog from a reputable breeder and a good idea would be to contact the breed council who should be able to provide you with a list of such breeders. Most reputable breeders don’t need to advertise but if they do they tend not to use free papers or other general advertising media but will usually place their advert in a specialist dog magazine or paper. The Kennel Club will provide a list of breeders but this does not signify that they are reputable only that they register their puppies with the KC.

There are a number of common conditions seen in this breed, some of which have a better prognosis than others but all of which are expensive to treat – so insure your German Shepherd Dog as soon as you get it.

Inherited conditions such as hip dysplasia are becoming more common largely because of irresponsible breeding so you should look for a puppy whose parents are both hip scored and the lower the score the better – ideally less than ten. This is a distressing and painful condition for a GSD as well as the costs for treating being prohibitive if the animal is not insured. Elbow dysplasia is also a common hereditary condition.

Bloat or gastric torsion is a real emergency and a life threatening condition, which has become more common in deep chested dogs over the years. Experts are divided but good tips for reducing the risk are that it is best to feed 2 small meals rather than one large meal a day and to avoid feeding your GSD before strenuous exercise.

Anal furunculosis is a distressing auto immune condition which can be controlled with expensive drugs for a while but will inevitably progress as is the condition CDRM which is a degenerative disease which will ultimately lead to the loss of use of the dogs back legs and then bowel/urinary incontinence.

For whatever reason there seems to be an increasing number of GSD’s suffering from PI – pancreatic insufficiency, which presents as chronic watery diarrhoea and failure to thrive. This condition is treatable with expensive pancreatic enzymes and a low fat diet but the regime must be strictly adhered to.

Epilepsy is also more common these days and although it can be controlled by drugs, usually tolerance eventually occurs which will often result in the loss of control of the fits and the likelihood of brain damage as a result of prolonged uncontrolled fitting.

To protect your new puppy and in order to try to minimise long term or future health problems, it is vital that a high quality feeding regime is adopted from the start. German shepherds often have digestive problems so it is important to find a quality food that your dog likes and one that doesn’t upset the digestion. Aggression, seizures and foaming are the main symptoms. Call the vet immediately if you spot any of these above symptoms.

5. Tapeworms

Tapeworms affect the stomach of a Golden Retriever and are normally caused by fleas. Diarrhea, loss of weight and biting of rectal area are the major symptoms of this ailment. A rigid flea control can prevent tapeworms from affecting your dog. Take it to the vet as soon as you see your dog suffering. The vet might kill the Tapeworms early through oral medicines.

6. Hookworms

Contact with any feces or simply burrowing under the exposed skin can cause Hookworms in your Golden Retriever. By keeping the surroundings and your dog area clean, you can prevent this from affecting your dog it is very essential to keep the dog’s skin clean. Weight loss, dry coat and blood seen in stool are the symptoms of this ailment. Just like any other ailment, this once seen must be immediately looked after. Take it to the vet and make sure you prevent this ailment from affecting your dog.

Why do Dachshunds Have Back problems?

Sadly, Dachshunds are amongst a group of dog breeds that are particularly susceptible to back problems. The most common issue for the Dachshund is Intervertebral Disc Disease, otherwise known as IVDD. Due to chondrodystrophy, it is believed that approximately one quarter of all Dachshunds will experience some medical condition connected with their back.

Therefore, it is advisable for every Dachshund owner to do all he, or she, can to prevent further strain on their dog’s spine. Additionally, it is wise to be vigilant for signs of IVDD, because if diagnosed early a dog has a reasonably good chance of recovering from the condition.

What is Chondrodystrophy?

Dachshunds are among a group of dogs that are known as chondrodystrophic breeds, which means they suffer from chondrodystrophy. Chondrodystrophy is a condition that causes cartilage to turn into bone. This happens before the dog is born and the result is dwarfism, which has created the look that is now recognizable as the Dachshund breed.

Aside from creating a very cute looking dog, this has caused numerous health issues for the little Dachshund, including degeneration of the joints and the spine, which can result in Intervertebral Disc Disease.

Intervertebral Disc Disease

IVDD causes the discs of the spine, which should act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae, to become rigid. The loss of flexibility in the discs can cause them to pierce the spinal cord, rupture, or become herniated. In severe cases, this can lead to paralysis, but even in minor to moderate cases, the condition is excruciating for the dog. Therefore, if you suspect that your dog may be suffering from IVDD, it is imperative to seek the assistance of a veterinarian immediately.

What to Look Out For

All Dachshund owners should be aware of the symptoms of back problems and notice any change in their dog’s behavior that may indicate IVDD. Back problems can occur in a Dachshund of any age, but IVDD is most prevalent amongst dogs of 3 to 6 years’ of age. The most common symptoms include:

Exclamations of pain when the dog is picked up. Reluctance or difficulty rising from lying down. A hunched stance when walking. Weakness, particularly in the hind legs. Unusually uncoordinated movement. An inability to climb stairs

The symptoms may vary from one dog to the next. It is always wise to bear in mind that in some cases the symptoms can gradually increase, while for others pain and difficulty walking appears suddenly.

While the above symptoms are all indicative of IVDD, they can suggest other medical conditions, too. Therefore, a full examination should be carried out by a veterinarian who can then make an informed diagnosis and ascertain the best treatment for your pet.

Possibly Treatments

If a case of IVDD has been caught early or if the condition is quite mild, treatment may simply consist of rest and anti-inflammatory drugs. In more severe or advanced cases, Dachshunds may require surgery to remove spinal bone and/or discs to allow the spine to heal itself. If diagnosed and treated early, a dog suffering from IVDD has a good chance of recovery.

What Can I do to Prevent IVDD?

While it is impossible to entirely prevent against IVDD, because it is a genetic condition, there are things that owners can do to reduce the risk to their Dachshund. Chiefly, a good diet and exercise is key, as an overweight dog will put added strain on an already vulnerable spine. Additionally, it is advisable to be careful when playing with your dog. You should avoid encouraging your dog to jump or play games that involve twisting motions.

However, owners should not feel guilty if their Dachshund has developed IVDD. Unfortunately, it is a genetic predisposition that in some cases is unavoidable.

It may sound tough to believe, but another common health problems of Golden retrievers is heat stroke. Be sure to keep your dog indoors during the hot months and make it drink lots of water. Don’t leave him in bright sunlight for a very long period of time.

If you think he’s been out for too long, let him rest awhile. Classic symptoms of heat stroke include drooling, panting, dark gums, and even vomiting. Once again you should take it to the vet immediately, if you think he is suffering from heatstroke.

One of the most serious health problems Golden retrievers face is rabies. It has a very serious affect on your dogs nervous system. Generally, dogs are liable to get rabies, only through the bite of another infected animal.

To prevent this, you should make sure you get your dog rabies shots periodically as per the vets instructions. Common symptoms of rabies include foaming at the mouth, seizures and aggression.

If you even suspect that your pet may have rabies, you should take it to the vet immediately as only he could tell you what to do. Never allow your dog near others when he is exhibiting these symptoms.

Lastly, let me tell you about tapeworms and hookworms. Tapeworms are spread by fleas and can cause a loss of weight, diarrhoea, and irritation in the rectal area.

It is better to make sure that your dog does not have fleas by checking regularly. Hookworms on the other hand generally enter your dogs digestive system if they come into contact with feces. For both these problems, you should consult your vet.
