Calling all dog-lovers! Dogs have made some of the most unforgettable characters in literature. It’s not uncommon for children to become as attached to a dog in print as the real thing. Puppy love comes in all forms. In fact, I believe I can trace my canine-cravings to my earliest days of reading, when I fell in love with Old Dan and Little Ann (from Where the Red Fern Grows). Below, I’ve compiled a list of five famous dogs you must bring home for your littlest children! (Good news…you won’t have to clean up after these champions!)

Carl is the star of seven picture books by Alexandra Day. The gist of these stories is that Carl, a responsible and caring rottweiler, is given the responsibility of caring for baby Madeleine while her parents are out. Once the adults are out of the way the fun begins! Carl includes Madeleine on some wild adventures. Sometimes they just trail the parents (keeping out of sight, of course), and sometimes they get into trouble—but Carl always manages to cover his tracks! With realistic watercolor illustrations and few words (only those necessary to suggest the storyline), Day’s books are designed for very young readers, 2-5 year olds, and will make rottweiler fans out of readers everywhere.

In 1976 Eric Hill’s son Christopher was born. Eric created a story about a small puppy to read to his son at bed-time. In 1980 Where’s Spot? was published. Now over forty Spot titles fill the library bookshelves, and the list is still growing. Cuddly and creamy-colored, with big brown spots on his back and the tip of his tail, this dog is destined to be your child’s best friend. With simple storylines and sturdy flaps, Spot books appeal to 2-5 year olds.

This is the Fiftieth Anniversary for our next dog protagonist. (Now how old would that be in dog years?) Harry, a small white dog with black spots, was created in 1956 by Gene Zion. Five installments complete the Harry collection. He is a wholesome, amusing addition to any children’s library. Whether he’s trying to quiet down his neighbor, hiding a hideous sweater, or visiting the seaside, Harry’s always into mischief! Even reluctant readers, ages 2-8 years old, can’t resist Harry!

Norman Bridwell gave birth to the next character, basing him on the kind of dog he dreamed of having as a little boy. But there’s nothing little about Clifford! Even though he’s fire-engine red and as big as a house, Clifford doesn’t do anything a real dog couldn’t do (with a little imagination.) The Clifford stories are based on ordinary events that turn extraordinary when Clifford makes innocent mistakes. His side-kick is his sweet little blonde owner, Emily Elizabeth. Designed for readers aged 6-10 years old, Clifford has been a children’s favorite since 1963. Now a PBS cartoon, Clifford continues to delight dog-lovers the world over.

The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog introduces us to Hank, and it isn’t long before you get the impression that author John R. Erickson is a keen observer of dogs. Indeed, as a former cowboy and ranch manager, Erickson started spinning yarns about Hank and Drover, two dogs he worked with on the range. These “true” stories became the Hank series, which now numbers at 48 installments. Designed for middle readers, ages 6-12, these make perfect read-aloud books that will even entertain adults. There are even recordings of the author reading the books available now!

Without a dog-gone doubt, dogs in print can substitute as man’s best friend. It’s a fine reward to see your little one light up at the sight of a book. A good dog and a good book, a match made in heaven!

Breeding Chihuahuas are not easy and it takes a lot of patients and determination when it comes to breeding successfully. This article will discuss some of the things you need to learn about before you decide to bring one into your home.

Potty training. Do it when they are young and able to make it into a routine. Chihuahuas are fiercely loyal to their owners and they do not like it when you are unhappy. Use this to your advantage when you are house breaking them and show your unhappiness as visually as you can when they do their business in strange places in the house. Once they relate the fact that you do not like it when they do this, they will understand and start to use proper places to do their business. Treat them when they get something right as Chihuahuas are quite loyal in this way. Once you show some affection, they will listen to you. This is important in breeding a high quality and housebroken dog.

These dogs are also very small dogs, so breeding them can be quite different from doing it with large dogs. When you do breed a dog, make sure you do it because you love or have a liking for the breed. This means learning all you can about Chihuahuas and how to properly take care of them. Doing it because you just want a dog is a mistake that a lot of people make when they breed Chihuahuas. Firstly, when you do breed them and have a pregnant mommy, you need to understand a few things. These dogs have pretty big heads in relation to their body size, so the labor and pregnancy of the mother dog can be quite hard.

This means that for a lot of breeders, they often have to bring their mother Chihuahuas for C-sections. And let me tell you, in the area of veterinary procedures such as this, you need a lot of spare cash when it comes to employing one of these procedures for your Chihuahua. An important thing about dogs you must know in general is that they must be awake almost immediately after the pregnancy, because if they do not recognise the dogs, they will most likely kill or even eat them. Chihuahuas also lose a lot of calcium when they go through their terms of pregnancy and labor, so you need to watch out for things like calcium defiance in the dogs.

Symptoms can include and are not limited to vomiting, eye movements which are unpredictable and muscle twitching. Because Chihuahuas are also genetically prone to epilepsy and seizures, calcium deficiency also adds to that. Constant trips to the vet is very important because vitamins and calcium injections might take place. Oral fixes like milk or vitamin tablets do not work in Chihuahua because of their metabolic rate and how their blood carries such minerals and nutrients.

These are some of the aspects that you should know about when breeding Chihuahuas. Of course there is a lot more to it than this, so talk to a vet before you decide to make that decision.

Exactly what is the meanest dog breed?

Pit bulls, Rottweilers and German Shepherds can randomly come off of almost anyone’s head. Their bad reputation and accounts of people who have had bad experiences with them seem to be enough to judge the aforementioned breeds. However, the American Kennel Club maintains that there is no such thing as a mean dog. They usually become mean when their owners abuse them or train them for fighting. Somehow, you can look at it in a “Nature vs. Nurture” point of view.

To expound further, Rottweilers and American Pitbulls are generally classified as working dogs. They were tasked to hunt and pull carts for their owners. They were and are still kept as house pets because they are generally good natured and loyal to their families. Their loud barks and strong jaws can also keep an intruder or a petty thief away. Then again, if they are such good dogs, one would have to ask why they were made to endure a horrible reputation.

American Pit Bulls and Rottweiler are quite famous in the dog fighting scene. The same strength and general musculature that they use to help people has caught the attention of dog fighting enthusiasts.  When trained properly their big bites can be potentially lethal. Yes, dog fighting is still illegal in most countries but sadly there are still a lot of people who gets involved with this underground spectator sport.

What usually happens is that when people breed them for this purpose, they usually train them to be overly aggressive. They are taught to attack any dog with the purpose of maiming them in a “battle”. After a rigid and often violent training, they more often lose their inherent trait of loyalty and gentleness. What the breeder will then have is an attack dog that purely acts on their “animal instincts”. To make things worse, their bad “dog – fighting” and “spike – wearing” image can easily get stuck to almost anyone’s mind.

The same scenario can be applied when a dog is abused. Generally a very patient dog will tolerate as much abuse as it can take. But when a dog is shown inhumanity all his life, he is bound to give in at one point or another and act according to his instinct to protect himself. If biting and fighting can make him keep his life, then that is what he will do.

What does this all mean?

That means that dogs are only as good as how you train them to be. Their genes and inherent traits can be easily changed based on their environment. In fact, anyone can turn the warmest and most affectionate Labrador Retriever to a monster if they want to.

So, the answer to the question posted above is none. No one has the capability to single out the “meanest breed” technically because every breed can be mean. The lesson here is that if you do not want a mean dog, then do not raise them to be that way. Treat them the way you would treat your own family. You would even be surprised to know that if given enough love, they can be the most loyal and loving companion one could ever get.

Celebrities like Paris Hilton may carry their dogs in their Gucci handbags, accessorized to the glittering collar. But the recent trend in designer dogs seems to suggest that everyday people are catching this unfortunate trend.

Instead of simply buying diamante collars, however, people are demanding cross bred dogs with catchy marketing names. We’ve had the Spoodle, the Groodle, the Labradoodle, the Spanador, the Cavador, and the Retrievador. Now folks, meet the Roodle.

The roodle is a cross between a poodle and a rottweiler. They are the successful creation of a breeder from Melbourne, Australia. Fred Freeman has successfully bred 3 litters of roodles, some going as far afield as Hawaii.

Roodles have the crinkly coat of a poodle, but larger. They are quite stocky, and fairly big, with long floppy ears. Mr Freeman describes the dogs as having the intelligence of a rottweiler, yet docile and easy to train. His roodles are also non aggressive, do not moult, don’t smell, and are low on the allergy scale.

The idea of creating a non allergic dog was what started the original breeder of the labradoodle, Wally Conran. Wally was the Manager of the Royal Guide Dog Association in Australia at the time. Someone needing a guide dog who was non allergenic contacted the Guide Dog Association, and Wally successfully crossed a labrador with a poodle that fitted this purpose.

So, the origins of the labradoodle were quite in keeping with the way many of what are now considered pure bred dogs were created. That is, they were created with a specific purpose in mind.

But the popularity of the labradoodle has created a new set of problems. Namely, many unscrupulous people, some with no experience breeding dogs, and others with none, or little, experience breeding labradoodles or other similar crosses, jumped on the bandwagon. Demand meant that these dogs were expensive, supply was short, and this attracted many into this new field.

But breeding dogs, especially across different breeds, is not simple. In Wally Conran’s original efforts, not all labradoodles were low in allergy. And when it comes to trying to come up with new mixes, a lack of knowledge can produce disastrous results. For instance, breeding two dogs with similar genetic weaknesses can lead to the new litters born with an increased chance of the health problems associated with those breeds. Other factors include disposition. If people are expecting certain traits based on what decent breeders have produced, and they pay a lot of money for a dog that turns our to be completely different, those dogs may well end up being abandoned.

In the case of a dog bought to be low allergenic, this likelihood is higher, and this is exactly what is happening to many of the labradoodles being bought in the US now. They are ending up in shelters because they do not have the characteristics of the carefully bred stock the variation originated from.

And given that badly bred rottweilers can be very aggressive, if the roodle trend takes off in the same way, this could be a disaster all round. Especially so if a family with children bought one expecting the docile nature of the roodles created by Mr Freeman, and end up with an aggressive, large dog.

Labradoodles are not consistent breeds. And given that ten years was spent trying to get a rottweiler poodle cross, there is every indication to think that roodles are not a consistent breed either. That means that simply mating a rottweiler with a poodle is not going to automatically get you certain characteristics, especially in temperament.

Normally, contacting an association for a recommended breeder would solve this type of problem. But in this brave new world of designer dogs, this may not always be the case. Especially if the experience with the labradoodles is anything to go by.

The breeders at Rutland Manor and Tegan Park in Australia started their stock from labradors, poodles and labradoodles from Don Evans, another breeder who had discovered the breed independently of the Guide Dog Association. Those labradoodles were legitimate labradoodles, and they kept records of all subsequent breeding. They also determined which coats were low allergenic. They conducted extensive research and breeding programs to arrive at the dog that has become characterized as a ‘labradoodle’. Contrary to popular knowledge, they are not the product of exclusively mixing in labradors and poodles. Other breeds were used occasionally, for certain characteristics.

The breeders at Rutland Manor and Tegan Park began calling their dogs, and those descended from that stock by reputable breeders, Australian labradoodles, to distinguish them from the labrador-poodle mixes that were being indiscriminately produced. The mixes were not quality controlled, many were allergenic, yet people with allergies were misled into buying them, expecting not to get allergic reactions.

The International Labradoodle Association was set up originally to help maintain the quality and characteristics of this new designer dog. Yet they now are seeking to call all labrador-poodle crosses ‘Australian labradoodles’. If this is successful, consumers will have no way of knowing whether they are buying what they think they are, and what their health requirements determine they need. The end result will be more abandoned dogs being euthanased because of a careless association and even more careless breeders.

These Beagle puppies came to us at 3 weeks old back in January. We sent them to foster care to give them time to get old enough to be adopted. They came back to the shelter and were all adopted this weekend! Sorry we couldn’t get this video posted before they were gone, but it is just TOO CUTE not to share! 3 weeks old and already practicing their howling – yup, they’re Beagles, all right! PS – that stuff all over their faces is dried puppy formula… not what you might think!

The Chihuahua is the world’s smallest dog and for those not in the know, it is named after a little known state in Mexico. The average height of the Chihuahua is around 15 to 25 cm – yet there are some rare cases where some of these dogs can blow up in size and grow all the way up to 15 inches tall. Interestingly enough, those dog experts in the UK and America all agree that for a dog to be aptly named a Chihuahua, it needs to follow certain requirements, which in the case of its weight, it cannot weigh an ounce over 2.7kg.

Chihuahua are also one of the more popular dogs which are entered into dog shows, and over the past few years, they have been snapping up some rave reviews and doggy awards. Chihuahuas are the celebrity dogs in the paparazzi pound house and owning one means you own a diva of a dog.

Don’t be fooled by their diminutive size, these dogs are actually better known for their ferocity and temperament towards other dogs. But they are also one of the more fiercely devoted dogs with extremely colourful personalities.

These dogs have been paired with celebrities like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan .They are extremely personable on a good day and can be the cutest thing to own. While they have the infamy of being one of the more temperamental dogs out there, with the proper training, they can be one of the best companion dogs out there.

One of the more quirky tips you should know about the Chihuahua is the fact that they have a predisposition to ‘burrow’ into anywhere they can to either sleep or hide for a while. This also means that there is a danger that the owner might unknowingly sit on his/her beloved pet dog. If you’re lucky ,all you will get is a yelp and at the worst – you might sprain its tail.

Chihuahua is very tough dogs, being able to take a lot of physical activity. Also, Chihuahua is really excitable and their first reaction is to bite if they get frightened or shocked. This means that infants and really small children are really not that suitable to be around them. Also, many owners have also mentioned that Chihuahua does get extremely jealous as once they get attached to someone; they might view the other people with the green eyes monster stare.

Chihuahua also come in a variety of colours which means for the fashion savvy you can colour co-ordinate your new pet choice with the shoes you just bought from Jimmy Choo. These are just some of the things you should note about the Chihuahua. They are a great purchase and they will really add some colour and excitement to your household. Also, they are fiercely loyal and quite comical at times – not to mention that they can be the most adorable things in the world.

With these 3 important tips you must know, you will be better prepared when you do decide to buy one.

All of us who have pets, find them sitting next to its favorite member of the household, who is at the dining table eating human food. The Golden Retriever looks longing at you, and often utters a small woof, especially when it smells a delicious piece that you are picking up and putting in your mouth.

What should you do? Is it advisable to feed the Golden Retriever, your pet, what you are eating? You have bought the recommended dog foods, but it has become a human almost, living day and day out with you. And it acquires the same tastes as you do. So there’s a dilemma here.

The best would be to consult with the Vet what kinds of human foods you can feed safely to your Golden Retriever. A bite does not matter, but going the whole hog? That’s a very different cup of tea, and care has to be taken.

So without substituting the Vet’s advice for your particular Golden Retriever – every dog has its own allergies and digestive system, and the metabolism may vary, we give some tips on what can be given generally.

Chickens, raw vegetables, turkey, brown rice, furits, oatmeal, are as good for them as they are for you. All animals have taste buds just like you and me. Some may prefer the oatmeal or chicken, ignoring the brown rice or the raw vegies, some the other way around. You can’t tell, just as you can’t tell for your children. If you are a child, you too ignore what your taste bud doesn’t like or you are not in the mood! And the dogs love to eat with the family; if you see a litter, and you have, they all eat together, just like us!

Well, if you open the frig, and your golden retriever runs up and sits there with his tongue hanging out, you can take it as a compliment! its not that it is asking you for a piece or a slice, it’s just that what you have cooked smells great to him! And he would love it if you gave him a piece.. how many of your family members do that?

There are some don’t does. And do follow them, and be firm about it.

1. Egg whites

Feeding large amounts of egg whites is spoiling the golden. Too much of it creates an excess of avidin, which results in Vitamin B deficiency. But if you give him egg yolks, it’s okay; egg yolks contain higher Vitamin B levels which will neutralise the avidin. The best is to give him the whole egg – raw – including the shell. That gives them lots of proteins. To vary it, you can choose to mix up the three, egg whites, whole egg, and the egg yolk. That means you have a choice of 9 varities you can use. (3 to the power of 3)!

2. Chocolates

Chocolates are a big NO. it contains Bromine, very toxic to dogs and cats. Unsweet chocolate is even worse: the Bromine content is much larger, and even more toxic. And is fatal if not checked right from the beginning.

As we said earlier, generally most human foods are acceptable for your pet, except chocolates. However, it is always best to consult your Vet who can guide you properly, which human foods can be used, or not used, what should be the ratio, and so on.

It’s just like your asking your physician for a healthy diet for yourself. The same applies to your pet. After all, it’s your best friend. Would you not take that precaution for your human best friend?
