The Chihuahua is considered the smallest dog in the world. She is smart, and an excellent choice for an apartment. She may not be good with very young children as she is fragile. She is a great companion and is generally happy to live with other pets. She is a very good watch dog.

*Good With Children? Yes, she is good with older, gentle, behaved children. As a reminder, never leave a young child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.
*Good With Other Pets? Yes, she is good with other pets.
*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Chihuahua is 6 to 9 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 2 to 6 pounds.
*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Chihuahua is no exception. Be on the look out for corneal dryness, dislocating kneecaps and collapsing trachea. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.
She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.
*Grooming. The Chihuahua has two coat varieties, short/smooth and long/soft. She should be brushed regularly. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her. Bathe monthly and keep water out of her ears.
Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.
Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.
*Life Span. The Chihuahua can live between 13 and 16 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
*Chihuahua History. The Chihuahua has a clouded origin, some saying that they are from the Aztecs, some Egyptian and some say they are from Mexican Toltecs. The modern discovery of this breed was in Mexico about 100 years ago. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1904.

WHY ARE SOME DOGS MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN OTHERS?

There are some dog breeds that were actually bred to be aggressive using selective breeding practices. Some dog breeds were originally bred to be fighting dogs such as the Akita dog breed while others may have been bred to be fierce guard dogs. Dogs such as the German Shepherd or Doberman are breeds that are prone to loyalty and protectiveness. This instinct can be tapped into to train these dogs to become fierce watchdogs.

Every dog is unique regardless of his or her breed. You can meet a kind and gentle Rottweiler and you can also meet a mean and fierce Poodle. The way that a dog behaves does not only depend on bloodlines but just as much on how the dog was raised.

A dog can be conditioned to be fierce through abuse. Some of the training practices to train dogs to be guard dogs are actually quite abusive. A dog that is scared and fearing for its safety will naturally tend to attack. Attacking a dog physically will provoke it.

While it is true that starting off with a breed which is known to have a tendency towards aggression makes it more likely that a dog will be aggressive, there are also dogs that come from aggressive lineage but that have always been treated well and are good-natured.

DOG AGGRESSION AND CHILDREN

Many studies have been done on children being attacked by dogs. While the researchers may have set out wanting to know which breed of dog was the most responsible for attacks on children, what they have found is that while the breed of dog is not consistent in terms of attacks, what is consistent is the age of the children. Most studies have found that the majority of dog bites and vicious dog attacks occur against children between the ages of five and nine.

Dogs are pack animals with a strong social hierarchy. The one who feeds and gives instruction in a household is usually an adult. A pet dog will equate this behavior from this adult as similar to the behavior of the Alpha dog in the pack. Therefore a dog is less likely to attack his master.

Young children may be seen as peers that can be dominated so that the dog can get ahead in the hierarchy. A dog which shows domination tendencies towards children such as humping them should not be left unattended with children because signs of trying to dominate children could be a signal that this dog could become aggressive with this child.

A dog who humps adult visitors may be simply trying to show that in this house he or she is above the visitor in the hierarchy but he will not necessarily bite. Perhaps children under the age of five are not left unattended with dogs as often as children between the ages of five and nine and this may explain why there are more incidences with children over the age of five.

It has been found that three out of four dog attacks against children are by the family’s own pet. Something else which people may find equally shocking is that friendly lovable dogs like Golden Retrievers have as many incidences attacking children as other breeds. One conclusion that has been made from this is that the more popular a breed is, the more chances there are that dog bites will come from this breed purely because of the numbers.

FATAL DOG ATTACKS

While all dog breeds may become aggressive in certain circumstances, the number one dog breed for causing fatalities is the Pit Bull Terrier. The Rottweiler comes in second. The problem of fatal dog attacks increases every year as these two breeds have become more popular. For this reason it is important for governments to make decisions on the conditions in which these breeds are allowed to co-exist with humans.

Some cities and countries such as Denmark, Holland and Norway have banned Pit Bull Terriers completely. Others say that this does not address the problem of dog aggression because Pit Bull Terriers are not the only dogs attacking, maiming and killing children. One thing that is certain is that a solution needs to be found to prevent such horrifying and meaningless deaths. At present, how to deal with dog aggression is a widely debated topic all over the world.

Dog Bite Statistics By Breed – Shocking Information

Many people are concerned with the prospect of dog bites. Although the ideal canine companion should be mild or even tempered, there are just instances when a dog can attack either after an unthinkable provocation or for other unknown reasons. Some dogs are trained to attack, but these dogs must be carefully handled and looked after at all times; otherwise, the law dictates that the dogs should be destroyed. As such, there are no established dog bite statistics by breed in the country, other than those privately gathered (and sadly, unverified) by independent sources. The truth is: many cases of dog attacks remain unreported, with the injured parties not even bothering to acquire medical assistance, for fear that the dogs might be destroyed; or for fear that the owners of the dogs might do something more damaging; or even just fear of being reprimanded (as with the numerous cases of teenage injuries.)

Besides, there are also no reliable estimates as to how many dogs are in the country, or the number of individuals per breed. Although the law dictates that a license for each canine pet is acquired by their owners, there are many of those who adopt strays or breed dogs without any regard for permits and such. Additionally, only the seemingly extreme cases of dog bites are reported by the media. It is said, that in some counties, dog bites occur on a very regular basis that people around are desensitized with the topic. And lastly, many people who are attacked by strange dogs usually do not know precisely what breed of dog they were facing. By the time the identification would have been made, the offending animal would have escaped or would have been destroyed already.

However, here are some facts given out by the CDC or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that you might want to know:

1. According to hospital records in 1994, more than 16,000 people were bitten or attacked by dogs that year; none of which were fatal but a good 6% of the victims needed one or more forms of reconstructive surgery. In 2001, that number rose to an alarming estimate of about 80,000 people nationwide, and 22% of the those needed extensive hospitalization and reconstructive surgery. And from that 22%, one-third of the victims were always children 7 years and younger. Infants or children who have yet learned to walk are the most vulnerable, constituting almost all of the cases of the victims who were under 7 years of age.

2. Pit Bulls have the most notorious reputation for biting people. In 2005, it is estimated that about 82% of all the dog attacks in the country were from this breed or from Pit Bull crossbreeds. This number may have been partly due to the fact that the population of Pit Bulls as home pets is also on the rise. Experts are estimating about 3 million to 10 million registered and unregistered Pit Bulls are now living in the country.

3. Other known dog breeds that have a lengthy record of dog bites and attacks are: Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, Chow Chows, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Huskies, Rottweilers, and Saint Bernards. Rottweilers rank the second most dangerous dog in the CDC’s list after the Pitt Bull.

CHIHUAHUA Information and Standard

Chihuahua (in Spanish: Chihuahua) is the smallest breed of dog in the world. Originate from Mexico, particularly from the territory of the State of Chihuahua, of which the name originates in. Was recognized in 1850, but their ancestors and (techichi breed) have been used by the Toltecs them buried with the dead and believed that helping the dead pass into the netherworld. When the conquistadors arrived in America, techichi were crossed with Asian breeds. Modern Chihuahuas are bred in 1850 in Casa Grande, Chihuahua state. The state borders the U.S., Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, where the breed began to spread worldwide. There are two types of Chihuahuas: dalgokosmesto and gladkokosmesto.

The head of the dog breed has a characteristic shape yabalkoobrazna. The muzzle is short. The eyes are large round and dark soils. Ears are made, large, wide at base and rounded at the end. The tail is long, sickle and stretched upward. Any color is permissible, but generally found gray, brindle and chocolate color.

The breed has a normal stable psyche for a small breed. Very rarely can meet hysterical individuals. It is believed that gladkokosmestite Chihuahuas are more active than long-haired and temperamental. The representative of the breed loves his master, sometimes jealous, but never malicious.

COLOUR : All colours in all possible shades and combinations are admitted.

WEIGHT : In this breed only the weight is taken into consideration, not the height.
Weight : Ideal weight : between 1.5 and 3 kg.
However, dogs between 500 gr and 1.5 kg are accepted. Subjects weighing more than 3 kg shall be disqualified.

This article deals with the German shepherd dog also called as Alsatian Shepherd. This breed of dogs shows self-assurance, friendliness and devotion to the owners than other breed of dogs. The recognition of German Shepherds still holds good as they have an unjustified status as aggressive Shepherds, because of their similarity to their far-away predator, the wolf. These dogs become hard to be handled if meddled harshly. They act as watch dogs for houses and also are used for protection purposes because of their courage, heroism, stubbornness, power and vigor. German Shepherds are generally not used in the security services like in army and police. But they are used at homes, since they show loyalty, love and affection to their owners.

German Shepherds are medium sized dogs and normally weighs about 40 kgs. Ears of these dogs remain wilted and droopy and become hard after they grow. Shepherds have sparkling eyes with a package of dense fur and have a proportionate structure towards their adulthood. These dogs develop some problems around the waist called dysphasia due to over jumping and shaking of the body and this leads to joint problems. Skin problems are common in Shepherds and everyday grooming is a must for these dogs. Perfect good food is essential to avoid skin problems.

These dogs eat normally 800gms of meal per day. They normally prefer fresh foods like meat and vegetables, other than dried dog foodstuffs. Shepherds normally prefer long walks and like straying outside the home. These dogs usually sleep outside the door of the house and provide safety and security. In short, these dogs are called as pet dogs. Socialism and instillation of good habits can be made possible by providing proper training to these dogs. It is more important to keep them psychologically and physically engaged.

Scientific researches have proved that by ascertaining a dog’s physical structure and behavioral characters, it becomes possible to decide on the breed of dogs appropriate to specific tasks and environments. More significantly, community may be enhanced with a dog or breed of dog, reducing the occurrence of activities arising from unsuited human-dog interactions. However, further study needs to be done to simplify and recover the functioning and social interactions with dogs.

In the up to date society, where the balance of power and influence is shifting and the Alpha individual becomes slightly asexual, ladies as equal owners and dominators have added a new dimension to the relationship. Today’s dog becomes an accessory.

Middle age woman reading the Sophisticated on a park bench, in the company of 2 sweet, hyperactive terriers, may as well be wearing a card sign on her back : “I may have been a fitness guru, but who can even stay alongside of Terry? Here, pooch, come get some chocolate.”

Young girl in a sports casual outfit, walking a German shepard or a rottweiler makes a firm statement : “I’m assured, robust, determined and typically purpose driven. I am the leader type. I call all of the shots and no-one steps in my bubble uninvited.”

Modern world has changed everybody and has seriously impacted our life-style. But the human being’s inner need for tenderness and friendship forces our pets into the changes that we bear. And whether or not the new role of the dog as an accessory isn’t necessarily of an evolutionary or flattering nature, so long as it continues to fuel and explain a multi-million years relationship, I am sure Pooch doesn’t mind.

Developmental bone and joint disease is a problem common to many large dog breeds, affecting the younger animals. If your dog is affected, he may show no symptoms at all, or he may demonstrate pain or lameness, and seem cautious about movement. Hip dysplasia may cause leg muscles to actually waste.

Many German Shepherds also suffer from Hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of the cells of the interior lining of the blood vessels. This condition can affect the skin, heart, liver, and spleen, as well as other organs. If you dog has Hemangiosarcoma, he may display weakness, light-colored gums, a distended abdomen, or even physical collapse.

Another German Shepherd dog health problem is weakness in the hind legs. This can also include wobbliness or a lack of coordination in the affected limbs. Multiple factors can cause this, including bone or spinal degeneration or possibly a slipped disc in the dog’s back.

Another problem to look out for is a diseased thyroid gland which will cause either over or under-production of thyroid hormones in some dogs. If your dog is experiencing skin infections, lethargy, hair loss, or cold intolerance it could indicate a thyroid problem.

Keep a keen eye on the eyes of your German Shepherd, especially if you notice apparent squinting, excess tearing or discharge, redness, or rubbing of the eyes. You should also be alert for any growths over the eye, regardless of the color. A condition called Pannus, an inflammation of the dog’s cornea, could cause any of these problems and be detrimental to your dog’s optical health.

A bacterial infection of the skin, sometimes accompanied by puss, is known as Pyoderma and can be a problem in German Shepherds. It is unknown what causes this condition, but it may be due to an immune deficiency. Your dog may have this if he displays pimples or sores, hair loss, redness or other abnormal skin conditions. Some dogs also become lethargic, or lose their interest in food.

A first step to avoiding these German Shepherd dog health issues is to make sure that your dog does not come from a breeder where other dogs had these issues. Watch your dog carefully, and be sure to consult your Vet if your dog displays any symptoms, or behavior out of the ordinary.

Labs need to be exercised every day…whether it is a play in the park, a swim in the pool, or a walk around the block. A home with a securely fenced in yard is the perfect environment for any Lab since they need a lot of room to run and play. In most instances Labs just love other pets too! They are fantastic with children and they are great watchdogs.

Labrador retriever’s often develop some health problems such as epilepsy, skin tumors, canine hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disorders, and skin allergies. Labs are no more prone to illness and disease than any other dog but each dog breed has its own group of health problems and these are what Labs seem to get most often.

The Labrador has a coat of hair that repels water; it is also thick and needs to be brushed regularly. Labs also need for their owners to brush their teeth for them or provide them with dental chews that do the trick instead of brushing. This helps to prevent plaque from forming on the teeth and thwarts periodontal disease. Their toenails also need to be clipped regularly. A healthy and cared for Lab will usually live about 12-15 years. This life span requires that the dog gets proper nutrition and exercise as well as great medical care and good living conditions.

The American Kennel Association first registered the Labrador in 1917. The Lab originates from Canada and was used by fishermen to haul in the fishing nets from the extremely cold waters. They were also used by hunters to retrieve ducks and other waterfowl. They are also used as guide dogs for the blind and therapy dogs.

The difference between English and American Labs is that the English Lab is a bit smaller and shorter but their face seems to appear fuller. The American Labs have a more overexcited personality. The typical characteristics of the Lab are that they are very smart, compliant, docile, friendly, and trustworthy. They are also very full of life particularly when they are puppies. Labs have a wonderful disposition. They are non-aggressive, playful and constantly willing to make somebody’s day.

Conversely, if you want a family pet but don’t want the hassle or the commitment of taking your dog running, biking, or swimming then it is best that you do not buy a Lab because they really need this interaction with their master to thrive.

Labrador retriever’s require a great deal of camaraderie and dislike being left home unaccompanied for more than just a little while. When they are, they can be very destructive so if you are gone a lot then you may want to reconsider buying the Lab.
