The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is an annual two-day conformation show held on the second Monday and Tuesday of February in New York City. Also referred to as the Super Bowl of dog shows, it is the second longest continuously held sporting event in the United States after the Kentucky Derby.

The Westminster Kennel Club was formed by a group of men who raised sporting dogs and every so often met at New York’s Westminster Hotel. The logo of the Westminster Kennel Club is based on a photograph of a Pointer named Sensation. Sensation was owned by the club and was said to have the most perfect head of any Pointer during his time.

The First Annual New York Bench Show of Dogs took place on May 8-10, 1877 and featured over 1,200 dogs. Because of the event’s huge success, a fourth day was added. The number of days was later reduced to three, then two. With a few exceptions, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has been held at Madison Square Garden since 1883. Although the show itself may last only a couple of days, the preparation for it begins at least a year in advance.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show attracts approximately 35,000 attendees, 4.6 million television viewers, and more than 400 journalists from over 20 countries. In 2002, 159 different breeds were represented, with the top five breeds entered being the Australian Shepherd, Dachshund, Rottweiler, Chinese Shar-pei, and Irish Setter.

The Best in Show award, which has been given out since 1907, is presented to the dog that receives top honors from three different judges. Dogs are judged on their general appearance, carriage, and condition. Judges also look at the color and texture of the coat; the forequarters, hindquarters, feet, and tail; and the dog’s temperament.

The breed that has won Best in Show the most number of times is the Wire Fox Terrier, with the terrier group having the most winners in general. The only dog to be awarded Best in Show three times was a Smooth Fox Terrier named Warren Remedy. Still, many other breeds have also won Best in Show, ranging from the small Pomeranian to the gentle Newfoundland.

The Flat-Coated Retriever has a medium length flowing coat that should be either solid black or solid liver, which is a deep rich brown. Their coat should lie flat to their body and preferably straight, though a slight wave is permitted. They can stand between 22 and 24 inches tall with females weighing 55-71lbs, and males weighing 60-79lbs. They have almond shaped eyes with small pendant ears that lie close to the head. They have a long muzzle and a well arched neck, with feathering on their feet, chest, underbelly and their tail, which should be held straight off the back. They have intelligent eyes and have an overall appearance of being agile while still appearing strong boned.

History. The Flat-Coated Retriever was developed in the 1800′s and is thought to be a mix of Newfoundland’s, Irish Setter, Labrador, Water Spaniel and possibly the Collie. They have an excellent ability to swim and have often been used by fishermen and hunters in marshy areas. They were popular up until the beginning of the first world war when their numbers fell and unfortunately have never quite recovered, this is thought to be mainly because people chose Labradors or Golden Retrievers instead, as they are cheaper and easier to find. They were recognised by the AKC in 1950.

Temperament. The Flat-Coated Retriever is a sweet tempered and loving dog. They are outgoing and devoted to their family. They love to please their owners but can be difficult to train as they become easily bored. They tend to have a positive outlook on life and will normally be seen with their tails wagging. The breed has an unusual habit, with other canines, in which they often lick the other dog’s nose and mouths as a sign of affection. They are an energetic dog who loves to play and needs plenty of mental and physical exercise, they are known for keeping the fun loving and youthful attitude on life right into their old age.

Health Issues. Although the Flat-Coated Retriever is a generally healthy breed, they can be prone to hip dysplasia, the eye condition PRA. These should be tested for before breeding the dogs. It has also been shown that they have a higher risk of cancer than most dogs, they have an average life span of around 10 years, with a high percentage of these deaths due to cancer.

Grooming. Flat-Coated Retrievers are only moderate shedders and require only a little grooming, a good brush every day should keep their coat in its best condition and remove any loose hairs, debris and mud. They also need a minimal amount of trimming especially on their feathering. It’s also important to regularly clean and check their ears and teeth.

Living Conditions. The Flat-Coated Retriever can be relatively inactive indoors but is not suited to apartment living as they need somewhere where they can run around. They are a very family orientated dog who thrives on their family, so the ideal situation would be that they live indoors but have a good sized garden.

Unlike other breeds, the Chihuahua breed can vary in height, and are more measured by their weight. American and British standards state this breed should weigh no more than six pounds, but the British standards, recommends between two and four pounds. This breed can grow as tall as 15 inches, this being the exception rather than the rule. This breed has both long and short hair Chihuahuas. This is classed in the tiny toy dog size category. They have a well rounded head and a short pointed muzzle.

However, these have a soft spot on top of their skull, which has usually closed by adulthood. This breed has beautiful round eyes large in appearance and set well apart. With erect ears, that are large in look. Their tail curls over the back or to the side, this is long and is sickle shaped. The coat comes in both short coats; wavy or flat coat and long coat. All colours are acceptable in this breed. This includes splashed and solid. A few examples of colour are red, cream, blue, black, chocolate, and black and tan, and merle, though this is not recognised by all show standards. This dog can live up to 17 years but between 10 and 17 years is more likely.

History: The Chihuahua breed comes from South America and is native to Mexico; this is how it gets its name from the state of Chihuahua. This is the oldest breed of dog on the American continent. Here we see the smallest breed of dog in the world. This dog was thought to be sacred to the Pre- Columbian Indians. There is debate about the facts of these dogs history and could, in fact, go back to Malta in the Mediterranean, but this is seen through art work rather than a fact. There is also an idea that this dog came from China some 200 years ago. DNA suggests that it is of Old World origin, this form of analysis only checks on the mothers’ side so the fathers’ side is not clear or known. We know as a fact this dog has a long history in Mexico. With links to the Toltec breed, which are a slightly bigger dog and whose history goes back to 2nd century B.C.

Temperament: The Chihuahua dog is very territorial and can be very protective. With a temperament that can be easily provoked. This dog, though small in size needs good and strong leadership from the human, this dog is a pack dog and needs you to be the pack leader. This is often forgotten due to their small size and that is why a cloud of misinformation follows this breed. While they are protective and territorial this does not have to mean badly managed. Often it is us humans that change the rules, and we then get the bad behaviour. If this dog was bigger we would treat them as a dog and so have fewer problems. The answer is, they are a dog and need to be treated like a dog. The AKC describes this breed as “A graceful, alert, swift-moving little dog with saucy expression, compact with Terrier-like qualities of temperament”. These dogs are not recommended for children as the child may be inclined to treat this dog as not a dog, and so get problems. This dog is loyal, and does not get along with all other dogs but likes the company of other Chihuahuas. This breed loves attention, and are eager to please. Do not allow this breed to get small dog syndrome, as this allows negative problems for your dog.

This breed can be hard to potty train but with firm and consistent rules the dog gets there in the end. Small, this breed maybe but walks are still needed, not just for the exercise but also offering mental stimulation daily. By walk, it is meant as a walk not a carry. This doesn’t have to be a vast distances but variety allows interest for your dog.

Health issues: The Chihuahua can get a long list of problems due to their protruding eyes, and it is best to check this. Rheumatism and slipped stifle, colds and gum problems can accrue. In puppyhood care needs to be taken as they can get fractures. In some the skull does not close properly and this can cause problems. The breed also can suffer hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar, which is dangerous for the young puppy.

Living conditions: The Chihuahua is a good dog for apartment life. This dog loves warm weather and dislikes the cold. Just to note this is only a small dog physically, and while it is small it will still need space, even if in an apartment.

Chihuahuas and their history

The Chihuahua is considered to be the smallest dog breed that exists and has been named after the place of Chihuahua in Mexico. Both through archaeological finds and mythical stories, this particular breed originated from Mexico. The most common and most likely theory is that these Chihuahuas have descended from the Techichi that was favored and preferred by Mexico’s Toltec civilization to become their companion dogs.

Techichi dogs hunted in packs. Their traces can only go back to as the 9th century but it is very much possible that this kind is the native Mexican ancestor of the Chihuahua. The Aztecs, who conquered the Toltecs, believed that the Techichi dogs possess mystical powers. Where size is concerned, the Chihuahua at present times is much smaller compared to its ancestors. This change was thought to be the result of the Spanish bringing miniaturized Chinese dogs into South America. In 1850, this particular breed was found near Casas Grandes in Chihuahua, Mexico. This Mexican state serves as borders for Arizona, Texas and New Mexico, places where Chihuahuas first became prominent and were developed in the North America.

This dog breed does not specify any standards especially with its height, as it has many variations compared to other dog breeds. Generally, the Chihuahua’s height would range from 6-10 inches, however, some of these dogs can grow tall and reach up to 12-15 inches. The standard weight for these dogs range from 4-7 pounds but if they are allowed to become overweight or if they have larger structures, then they could weigh up to 10 pounds or more. For their colors and spotting, the standard list includes solid colors of black and white, Dalmatian spotting, extreme black spotting, and other varieties of patterns and colors like Blue which is considered very rare, Chocolate, Cream, Fawn and Red. Combinations of these patterns and colors can greatly affect each other, which will then result to a higher degree of variation.

Being naturally protective and defensive, Chihuahuas are easily provoked and they do not always go well with other breeds, which are the reasons why they are not generally suitable for homes and households, especially those with small, rowdy children. These dogs can be overly hyper and energetic but are easy to please. They love to be petted and will sit in your lap for hours. They can be yappy dogs, but with constant proper training, they can acquire a fine, terrier-like attitude.

Chihuahuas are not fit to become pets of small children because of their small size, temperament, and have a tendency to bite and hurt when they are frightened. It is very much recommended that children should be of school age or even older when adding and taking care of a Chihuahua inside their home. Also, keep in mind that Chihuahuas focus their loyalty and devotion on one single person alone, so they tend to become overly jealous of the other human relationships that his owner might have. This can be toned down through socialization. Chihuahuas also prefer the company and friendship of other fellow Chihuahuas than the other breeds of dog.

A Short History of the Rottweiler

Driving cattle was Rottweilers main historic function.. Rottweilers had another historic job besides driving cattle to the butcher. It is the same job that the Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs and Bernese Mountain Dogs, also in the Working group, are best known for. You see, like their Swiss cousins, Rottweilers are drovers that were also used as draft dogs for centuries.

While the main job of the breed was herding large livestock, they were also often used to pull small carts, carrying such things as milk to market.

So, why were dogs, such as Rotties, commonly used as draft animals instead of a horse, which could certainly handle a greater burden? There are several reasons. And most of those reasons lead straight back to the fact that a dog was the more economical choice under the circumstances.

For the most part, draft dogs were employed by small farmers. Perhaps it was a family with a handful of dairy cattle or a few chicken houses. Or perhaps they were subsistence farmers, who used most of their crops for themselves and could only spare a small amount to sell. Either way, in most cases, these were not big landowners. They did not have a huge amount of product to take to market and they did not have a lot of money to invest in a beast of burden. No matter what point in history we are talking about, it has always cost less to purchase a good dog than a good horse.

Let’s look at the plight of a small dairy farmer. A horse would be using the same pasture as his cows, eating the same grass and grain. His choice might come down to the question of does he want a horse, or does he want to add another cow to his herd and increase the amount of milk his farm produces.

A dog, on the other hand, is not going to consume anywhere near the amount of food that a horse would. Also, the dog wouldn’t be intruding on the cattle’s food supply. While they are usually considered carnivores, dogs actually have some omnivore tendencies. The farmer could simply give them a serving of whatever his family was eating that evening. Plus, a dog could supplement its meals by hunting vermin or pests.

Also, in the case of Rottweilers, the dog could serve multiple purposes. He could be used to herd cattle from the pasture to the barn, in addition to pulling the milk to market. His protective nature made him an excellent farm guardian, as well.

In addition to those reasons of why to use a dog, there were also health issues. As anyone who knows much about horses can tell you, the term “healthy as a horse” is a bit deceptive. Horses are actually very sensitive animals. Too much green grass in the spring and they can founder and go lame. A sudden change in the type or amount of grain and they can get colic, and possibly die. On the other hand, a farm dog would be much hardier (the term “sick as a dog” is also deceptive). And let’s not forget the fact that you don’t normally have to shoe a dog.

In the late 19th century, railroads nearly put the nail in the coffin of the drover dogs of southern Germany. It became illegal to drive cattle for long distances along roadways. However, Rottweilers still had their secondary occupation of draft dog available to them for several years afterward.

Unfortunately, though, they also soon lost that job as well. Donkeys became much more commonly used than dogs as beasts of burden. While a donkey eats the same food a horse would, because if its size, it doesn’t need near as much. In addition, they are much hardier than horses.

When compared to dogs, a donkey could pull more weight. It could also be ridden, something that even the biggest Rottie is not capable of. Like llamas, donkeys can make good livestock guardians, too, mercilessly chasing away anything that looks like a predator.

As with herding, the modern Rottweiler can still be used for carting. Only now, instead of an occupation, carting is now considered a fun hobby for both dog and owner.
