Keeping your Golden Retriever Healthy

Keeping your golden retriever healthy can also mean keeping his immune system in good condition. This helps him fend off diseases easily and prevent him from being sick at some point of his life. There are many ways to improve the immune system of our dogs. Here you can learn some of the points to ponder if you really care for your golden retriever.

Homemade dog food is the best for Golden retrievers compared to canned food. It tastes a lot better and contains more vitamins and minerals that are not abundantly found in canned food. You may choose to mix homemade food with canned food or depending on your preference. When it comes to drinking water for your golden, choose spring water over faucet water. Spring water is not likely to contain dangerous minerals unlike faucet water which may contain lead and mercury and other dangerous metals.

Feeding him raw bones will help him develop a strong set of white teeth. Try to make it a good treat by sparing lots of meat on the bone. Having a good teeth is one good quality of a golden retriever. Giving him one bone per day will help him develop his teeth and jaw strength as he will keep chewing everyday. You can also give him chew toys as substitute. This can be helpful if you’re playing with him.

Knowing what health problems your golden retriever can encounter will also keep him healthy all throughout the year. This way you won’t go to the vet from time to time. However if your vet, tells you something he should know, you should tell him what your golden is experiencing so you can help reduce the problem for your golden retriever.

You should try to check your golden retriever for any reproductive system problems. You should check the problem sooner or it may be too late. Neutering your male golden retriever will help him avoid contact with female golden retrievers if your planning not to breed your golden retriever yet or avoid any type of reproductive problems caused by the opposite golden retriever.

Keep in mind to keep your dog healthy at all times and he will stay with you a lot longer. Make your dog always comfortable and give him a nice diet and adequate exercise to keep him fit and strong. Good pets are the healthy ones that can synchronize with you with your day to day activities.

Weimaraner Dog Breed History And Characteristics

The Weimaraner dog like the Greyhound dog was a breed that was once restricted to nobility alone on the penalty of punishment. The Weimaraner dog breed’s very distinct color and appearance was the result of a very careful and secretive developmental breeding program. Ownership of one of these dogs was so jealously guarded that on the rare occasion that a single specimen had to leave the hands of a revered few, that dog was sterilized.

Okay, we have a new and improved Jus with a bunch of new scores and more than a few questions.  This kind of stuff is right up my alley so let’s take a ride together as I attempt to sort out the details.  I’m going to have some fun with this so hang on! Here we go…
Radicals, also known as free radicals, are the issue at hand. A free radical is a molecule with an unpaired electron. As a rule, a free radical is highly reactive and unstable; the free radical seeks to pair its unpaired electron with another molecule and will react with other molecules in order to obtain this missing electron. If a radical achieves this by “stealing” an electron from another molecule, that other molecule itself becomes a radical, and a self-propagating chain reaction has begun.

Here’s what you need to know: free radicals in your body can cause a multitude of serious problems. The undesirable consequences of free radical damage includes oxidative stress, an accelerated aging process, damage to your DNA and genes, cell degradation, cell mutations, and even cell death.  There is no “up-side” to free radical damage in the human body. The less cellular damage you have, the better off you’ll be.
ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It is an in vitro (test tube) assay (assay is a fancy word that means test or analysis) used to measure the antioxidant capacity of foods, supplements, Jus, etc.  ORAC measures the ability of substances, such as polyphenolics to absorb “free radicals” or prevent them from forming.  All in all, ORAC was and is a great measurement; it was in fact pretty much all we had. And, as our knowledge of oxidative stress and free radical damage began to grow, the ORAC score became a very important number indeed; this score however was just the beginning of a far broader spectrum of measurements.

Here’s a fact for you that you do well to remember; we now know that there is not a “one size fits all” assay or measurement, thus Jus’ decision to formulate a product that scores exceedingly well not in one simple test, but rather five. Such an undertaking was not easy. We already had the highest Peroxyl ORAC score on the planet. By changing our formula we had a lot to lose…or did we?
Here’s the deal… antioxidants protect the body against a variety of harmful free radicals. Broad-spectrum antioxidant protection is very important because different radicals are implicated in different human health conditions. When the original ORAC test was developed, it simply measured the ability of a food to fight one of these radicals, which also happened to be the one most abundant in the human body, the peroxyl radical. Time and progress marches on however; as science has progressed, so has our ability to effectively measure what actually goes on in our bodies. More radicals were discovered; more tests were needed. In summary, one test was good, five are better. Let’s take a look at the current “Big 5″ used by Jus.

Peroxyl ORAC – originally conceived by Richard Cutler, advanced and modified by Drs. Cao, Prior and Brunswick Laboratories – is regarded as the best available test for measuring antioxidant capacity against the peroxyl radical which happens to be the one most abundant in the human body. The Peroxyl ORAC is the score most often quoted as it was the “original” ORAC test. Here’s what you need to know: the ORAC score measures the ability and efficiency in absorbing existing peroxyl radicals within your body. People tend to have a boatload of peroxyl radicals and you need a big sponge to clean them up. Imagine peroxyls as a swarm of cockroaches wanting to take over your body. Now imagine a giant “anti-cockroach” sponge coming in to clean them up. The higher the Peroxyl Orac, the bigger the sponge. Here’s the deal, you want fewer cockroaches in your life? Drink the Jus!

Hydroxyl ORAC – HORAC: Technically, this is an oxygen radical prevention capacity assay – it quantifies the ability of a substance to prevent the formation of hydroxyl radicals rather than absorbing them after their formation (think of it this way, a good defense is a good offense). This assay was developed and put into use back in 2002. The HORAC and ORAC assays measure two different but equally important aspects of antioxidant properties – radical chain breaking and radical prevention.  Here’s what you need to know: the ORAC score reflects peroxyl radical absorption capacity and the HORAC score measures radical prevention ability. Basically the ORAC cleans up the mess once it’s in; the HORAC tries to stop the mess from ever happening in the first place. HORAC measures the “Rottweilers” protecting your body. The higher the HORAC, the bigger and meaner your Rottweilers. You want a bigger Rottweiler? Drink the Jus!
Superoxide ORAC –  SORAC:  Superoxide anion is uniquely harmful among radicals because it is the precursor to other radicals such as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl. By quenching superoxide, antioxidants also prevent the formation of these other radicals. The human body compensates for superoxide by producing the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD).  Superoxide is biologically very active and powerful and is thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of many diseases. Here’s what you need to know: Superoxide scavenging capacity in the human body is the first line of defense against oxidative stress. If you can get rid of the superoxide, you can get rid of all the big ugly friends it likes to bring with it. Just imagine a nasty egg-laying Alien wanting to take residence in your body…no thanks! Get rid of the Alien and you don’t have to worry about the eggs! Just say NO! to egg-laying Aliens. Drink the Jus!

Peroxynitrite ORAC – NORAC: This one is downright scary… imagine a cellular Darth Vader on steroids looking to do you in! Peroxynitrite was discovered around twenty years ago. It’s very hard to detect in the body, but here’s the findings so far. Several studies have linked peroxynitrite to Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, Meningitis and other degenerative neurological diseases. Here’s what you need to know. If you want to steer clear of the stuff just mentioned, you have to steer clear of peroxynitrite. Peroxynitrites are not your friend; they can damage your cells; they can damage your DNA; they can inhibit ATP production; they can promote coronary artery disease; they can deplete antioxidant levels; they can disrupt intracellular signaling; they can cause cell suicide. If there were ever a Darth Vader at the cellular level, Peroxynitrite is the guy. In any event, the higher the NORAC, the fewer “dark side” consequences you’re going to have to deal with.  Jus provides the Jedi Knight protection you need against these bad guys! May the Jus be with you!
Singlet Oxygen Absorbance Capacity – SOAC: This one is interesting. Singlet Oxygen is not actually a free radical at all but rather a highly charged molecule that possesses more energy than it should. Here’s what happens; when these supercharged molecules go around zapping other molecules in the body, damage occurs. Imagine an annoying Richard Simmons type of molecule carrying a tazer…not deadly, but most definitely annoying.  Even though it’s not free radical damage, it’s still damage so we need to control it.

When singlet oxygen occurs in plants, the plant manufactures carotenoids to protect against singlet oxygen by converting it back to normal (non- supercharged) oxygen.

The SOAC is a test that caters especially to singlet oxygen and carotenoids. Carotenoids are primarily found in red, yellow and orange foods such as carrots and pumpkin which tend to score poorly on the standard ORAC test; they simply do not defend well against the peroxyl radicals. However, carotenoids defend brilliantly against singlet oxygen. Singlet oxygen is linked (at least so far) with the oxidation of LDL cholesterol which of course leads to all sorts of cardiovascular issues.  Incidentally, the most common carotenoids found in human tissue include beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin, alpha-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin. Here’s what you need to know. We all have enough problems without dealing with a tazer-toting Richard Simmons. If you want less Richards Simmons in your life, you better drink the Jus!

Life can be complicated Yep, it’s true. Everyday your body has to deal with invading cockroaches, egg-laying Aliens, Darth Vader on steroids, a tazer-toting Richard Simmons and all kinds of bad guys trying to sneak past your Rottweilers. There’s only one “best” solution and that is the new and improved Jus. It has my endorsement as the very best “anti-cockroach, anti-Alien, anti-Darth Vader, anti-Richard Simmons and anti-bad guys in general” drink in the world. Enjoy!

Time to wrap up Part One!

Okay, here’s the deal. Jus had to make a decision. Do we build a winning basketball team built around one “Hall of Fame” player and four okay players? Or…do we build a winning basketball team with five All-Star players who play amazingly well together. The choice was obvious. We would rather have a legendary team than a legendary player.
Part 2 of this series is coming soon. Stay tuned and drink your Jus!

Orac 101 – Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity – Drink Jus

People have often asked me, “How long will it take for me to feel the effects of JUS?” In my opinion, the most important answer to this question is that virtually everyone will receive health benefits from JUS five, ten, and twenty years down the road.

Choosing a Healthy Chihuahua Puppy

October 1st, 2010

Choosing a healthy chihuahua puppy is an important task for anyone thinking about becoming a chihuahua owner. Chihuahuas can make great pets. They are very loyal, curious and have great (and often funny) personalities. Being the smallest breed of dogs in the world, they are great if you live in an apartment or in a cramped house. Their devotion to their masters and their desire to please is what really sets these dogs apart. Please note however that Chihuahuas are quite fragile animals that require special attention and may not be the ideal pet for you if you enjoy a very active lifestyle.

There are several things that you can look out for to ensure that your puppy is healthy. Making sure that your puppy is healthy before you make a purchase is very important. Start by making sure that the teeth of your puppy are straight and clean. Make sure that they do not have an overbite or other teeth and gum deformations as this can lead to complications later in the Chihuahua’s life. The fur of the puppy should be clean and regular, with no spots or flakes on the skin. You should also check the fur for fleas and parasites which could be an indication of bad health.

Don’t be fooled by breeders who advertise their puppies as being a certain size. They may use terms such as “teacup”, “miniature”, “tiny toy” or “pocket size”. The “Chihuahua Club of America” maintains that these names have no basis and they are merely used by breeders to help sell their dogs.

If a puppy seems to be very lethargic (i.e. if they have a slow reaction rate and don’t respond well to changes in their environment), this could be an indication that your puppy has hydrocephalus. Although we understand that you may want a puppy that is calm and quiet, we recommend that you choose a puppy that seems alert and awake – this will avoid heartbreak in the future.

You will also need to choose whether you would like a male or female Chihuahua. Males tend to guard their territory more aggressively than females. This could be useful for you if you live in a house, but if you live in an apartment (and especially if there are other dogs around), their barking could become a problem for your neighbors. Whether you choose to adopt a male or female puppy, it is very important that you get your dog neutered. This will limit certain unwanted traits such as agitation during mating season. Some people claim that female Chihuahuas are easier to train than males, but this has never been proven scientifically. It all comes down to personal preference.

It is very important to ask to see both parents when you go and choose your Chihuahua. They will give you a good idea about how your Chihuahua will grow. If they have a bad temperament, or if they appear unhealthy, it is best to find another dealer before it is too late. This will also assure you that both parents are in fact Chihuahuas and that your puppy is not a mixed-breed.

Chihuahuas can be great pets if you choose one wisely. Be sure to contact your vet when you have purchased your puppy, as he will ensure you that the puppy is in good health. Good luck and have fun with your Chihuahua!

Labrador Retrievers: Keeping Them Healthy

August 9th, 2010

The Labrador Retriever has gained itself a reputation throughout the world of dog breeds of being one of the most friendly and calm dogs going. All the Labrador Retriever information available simply reiterates the fact that if this particular dog was laid back any further it would be lying down!

Labrador Retrievers are perfect in every way, no flaws at all right? Not quite, you see being a large dog as dogs go the faithful Labrador Retriever needs a fair amount of food. The problem comes when your dog simply does not stop eating.

Most of the information available about Labrador Retrievers will say about their voracious appetite, they cannot seem to have enough food. They are a big dog weighing between 45 – 80lbs. A large part of the problem comes from the dog receiving too little exercise and too much food. Labs are the most healthy when they have a proper exercise routine in place.

Labrador Retrievers adore people and especially their own ‘human family’ and they are a dog that simply enjoy being close to people. The closeness is enjoyed even more so when the dog’s family are eating. Once the dog turns its beautiful puppy-dog eyes on the people asking for food most will cave in and relent.

Owners of Labrador Retrievers feel that they are being kind by giving in when their dog asks for food. The truth of it is they are actually being cruel. Their Labrador Retriever is much more likely to suffer from health disorders if the dog is obese. Carrying the excessive weight around with them puts a lot of strain on the dog for starters; the dog’s joints can suffer as can the Labrador Retriever’s heart.

Being overweight can also make the dog and other dog breeds susceptible to diabetes, the condition is treatable but if you read a lot of the dog information literature available regarding diabetes in dogs it explains that diabetes can actually make dogs very sick and even blind if left untreated.

Take the time to observe your Labrador Retriever properly and notice if the dog’s body has an hourglass shape to it at all. If the dog appears fuller around the abdominal region then the chances are that your dog is overweight, as are so many dogs I know but it is so commonly spotted in the Labrador Retriever. Owners need to be firm and cut out all the treats and reduce their food intake.

The problem is that the more weight the dog piles on the less active he / she is going to feel and you then end up on an endless ‘circling’ exercise, simply going around in circles.

There are people that can hopefully help you and your lovable Labrador Retriever, even dog dietitians exist in today’s world so do not be afraid to ask for assistance. It’s also helpful to read up on how to properly feed your Labrardor on the internet. Once you start giving your Lab the proper amount of food and exercise, thee weight should easily start to fall off.

Grooming Yorkshire Terriers for Healthy Long Lives

July 24th, 2010

The Yorkshire Terrier is known for its long & flowing coat, to maintain this appearance the coat requires daily grooming. Yorkshire Terriers possess what is known as a ‘single coat,’ simply meaning that they do not have an undercoat. Their hair is incredibly soft & silky & is often referred to as being very similar to human hair. This fact is wonderful for people that are perhaps allergic to normal animal fur.

Yorkshire Terriers do not have the normal ‘fur’ of other dogs therefore they are less prone to possess the normal ‘doggy’ smells another bonus is that the breed does not shed its fur as most other dogs do.

Their hair grows permanently & can become very easily matted so needs regular trimming hence the reason for the topknot. A lot of people mistake the band or bow placed so perfectly in the dog’s fur as just a decorative piece, in truth without it the dog’s hair would be constantly in its eyes.

Some owners prefer to keep their Yorkshire Terriers clipped short for ease, this is a good idea but you must ensure that you are prepared to keep this up every few months.

Before you brush your Yorkshire Terrier lightly mist their coat with a solution of warm water & a normal mild dog conditioner this will assist to soften the coat. If you groom the coat completely dry it can make it harder to work through any tangles & there is more chance that you will break the hair.

Refrain from using a natural bristle brush, as they are likely to ‘snag’ the dog’s coat. The best type of brush for the fine, silky hair of the Yorkshire Terrier is a good quality pin brush with a rubber backing to it. Keep away from the pin brushes that have the little balls on the ends of the pins as they have a tendency to pull at the coat & break the fine hair.

After brushing your dog’s coat thoroughly use a wide toothed comb to gently go over the coat again as this will just ensure that you have removed all the tangles.

Grooming does not just involve the brushing & combing of your canine friend it should include checking your dog’s ears, eyes, teeth, paws & their nails. Of course these other checks do not have to be completed on a daily basis but it is a good idea to adopt a regular routine, perhaps every couple of days.

Take great care when clipping your dog’s nails if they are done frequently it makes it easier as you will not have to cut so much off each time you clip them, just ‘tip’ the very ends. If you cut too far down the claw you risk catching the ‘quick’ this is the term for the nerves & blood vessels that supply the nail. If the worst happens & you accidentally clip the quick, do not panic, have some powder to hand even talcum powder will do & pop some onto the claw in question. The powder will aid in coagulating the blood therefore stemming the flow.

Never attempt to stick anything into your dog’s ears, simply just wipe around the outer ear & very gently around the inner ear. Look at your dog’s ears regularly & become accustomed to their normal appearance, this way you will be instantly aware if anything alters.

It is important to clean your Yorkshire Terrier’s teeth regularly with a special dog toothbrush & paste, encouraging your dog to chew at hide based treats is also a good idea as this will help to reduce tartar building up.

The two main reasons for regular grooming are:

1. If your Yorkshire Terrier looks great he/she will feel great.

2. As you are grooming you can check for any sores, lumps or cuts on your dog.

Help to keep your Yorkshire Terrier happy & healthy by grooming him/her regularly, after all if your dog is happy you are happy!

Keeping Your Adorable Beagle Puppy Healthy

May 26th, 2010

I would be lying if I said that beagle puppies are ugly. To me, it is probably one of the most adorable breeds of dogs that I’ve ever seen. Nevertheless, you should think twice before you decide that you want to adopt a beagle puppy. It is not easy to take care of a beagle puppy, especially when it comes to keeping it healthy. There are a lot of things for you to know about a beagle puppy, such as preparing its meal and knowing its habits and preferences. Therefore, you will need to seek advice on keeping your adorable beagle puppy healthy if you truly want to adopt a beagle puppy.

Most importantly, you have to make sure that you have enough time to spend with your beagle puppy. Beagle puppies prefer to have companion around them. If you need to work and can’t spend much time with your beagle puppy, it is recommended that you adopt a few more pets to accompany your beagle puppy. Any type of pets such as a Chihuahua or even cats will do the job, since beagle puppies are friendly and sociable in nature. When they are left alone, they will tend to make noises and create nuisances of themselves, just to catch your attention. Also, if you happen to own a garden or a backyard, your beagle puppy might even dig up the garden and make a mess of it. Therefore, it is very important that you spend sufficient time with your beagle puppy.

Next, you have to be cautious with the health of your beagle puppy. Beagle puppies, when compared to other breeds of dog, are more prone to diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, back problems and kidney failure. Therefore, it is vital that you bring your beagle puppy to the vet for regular health checkups. When diagnosed at an early stage, these diseases should not cause too much trouble. Other than health checkups, you should also bring your beagle puppy outdoor to exercise. Exercising allows your beagle puppy to maintain its fitness and prevents obesity. In the long run, obesity will cause skeletal problems and other heart related diseases. For that reason, it is important for your puppy to exercise regularly. Bringing your beagle to the park may be a good form of exercise for your puppy but you have to make sure that your puppy is on a leash, as it will wander off from your sight if something catches its attention.

Lastly, you have to pay attention to the grooming of your beagle puppy. Beagle puppies tend to shed quite a lot of hair. Therefore, you must brush its coat at least once per week to keep the coating of your puppy clean and healthy. It is also a type of emotional bonding when you help to brush the hair of your puppy. Other than brushing its hair, you will have to clean the ears of your puppy. As the hairs of the puppy always trap moisture underneath its ear, infection often occurs around that area. Therefore, you will have to clean the ears of your puppy with dry cotton buds.

It is important to keep in mind the few points mentioned above. Those are tips to keeping your adorable beagle healthy and you will definitely need those tips if you are keen on adopting a beagle puppy.
