German shepherds are among the most handsome breeds in the world, and make wonderful family pets, but those getting German shepherds should know that they sometimes have serious health problems. Buy your puppy from a reputable dealer and ask about health problems in the dog’s biological family.
Canine hip dysplasia is an abnormality in which the hipbones have an abnormally shallow place where the femur, or thighbone, is supposed to fit. When this happens the joint may be loose and the dog can be lame. Painful arthritis can develop from this malformation. Constipation can also result. Prevention includes feeding only what the dog strictly needs, since overweight can be a contributing factor, providing a well-balanced diet with just the right amount of calcium, and providing moderate exercise such as running and swimming once the dog is an adult. Once dysplasia has been diagnosed, aspirin can keep down inflammation and warmth can help with the pain. Orthopedic surgery is another option.
Elbow dysplasia is a malformation of the front legs, possibly due to abnormal rates of growth. It, too, can cause loose joints and painful arthritis. Treatment consists of aspirin for the inflammation or surgical correction.
Heart diseases can also be a problem. Deformities of the heart valves are sometimes seen, and are treated with surgery to replace the deformed valves. Thickening of the muscles of the heart and irregular rhythms are also serious heart problems.
Gastric bloat or twisting of the stomach is problematic in large breeds with deep chests. For reasons not fully understood, the stomach twists painfully and its contents are trapped. It is a veterinary emergency.
Degenerative myelopathy, or multiple sclerosis of dogs, is a disease in which the immune system attacks the nervous system.
Von Willebrand’s disease is a deficiency of one of the clotting factors in the blood. Blood platelets, the cells responsible for clotting, cannot work efficiently without all the clotting factors. Dogs with von Willebrand’s disease bleed easily and should be watched for any signs of trauma or bleeding.
Hemangiosarcoma is a kind of cancer that develops in the blood vessels and spleen. Dogs can show signs such as nosebleeds, fatigue, pale gums, abnormally fast breathing, and swelling of the abdomen. Sometimes if it diagnosed early surgery is possible, but the prognosis is poor.
Eye problems are also common in German shepherds. Cataracts are a clouding of the lens of the eye, which can be removed surgically. Distichiasis refers to eyelashes growing in abnormal places, which can cause irritation. Ectropion refers to eyelids not closing properly, leading to exposure and irritation. Entropion is inward growth of the eyelids, causing the eyelashes to rub against the eye and irritate it. Macroblepharon is an abnormally large skin opening for the eye. Persistent pupillary membranes is a birth defect in which tissue that is supposed to disappear in early puppy hood does not disappear. Progressive retinal atrophy affects the back of the eye where the image from light is projected. Night vision fails at first, and as the disease progresses the dog becomes completely blind.
When looking for a German shepherd, be sure to find a breeder who is in the field to improve the breed, as opposed to one who is running a puppy mill for profit. Going to German shepherd dog shows is one way to meet owners who are concerned about the breed and good health. You can also speak with veterinarians who see a lot of German shepherds to get advice as to where to find a shepherd puppy who is free from genetic disorders.

If you are buying a German Shepherd puppy it is important to ensure that you only purchase a healthy dog from a reputable breeder and a good idea would be to contact the breed council who should be able to provide you with a list of such breeders. Most reputable breeders don’t need to advertise but if they do they tend not to use free papers or other general advertising media but will usually place their advert in a specialist dog magazine or paper. The Kennel Club will provide a list of breeders but this does not signify that they are reputable only that they register their puppies with the KC.
There are a number of common conditions seen in this breed, some of which have a better prognosis than others but all of which are expensive to treat – so insure your German Shepherd Dog as soon as you get it.
Inherited conditions such as hip dysplasia are becoming more common largely because of irresponsible breeding so you should look for a puppy whose parents are both hip scored and the lower the score the better – ideally less than ten. This is a distressing and painful condition for a GSD as well as the costs for treating being prohibitive if the animal is not insured. Elbow dysplasia is also a common hereditary condition.
Bloat or gastric torsion is a real emergency and a life threatening condition, which has become more common in deep chested dogs over the years. Experts are divided but good tips for reducing the risk are that it is best to feed 2 small meals rather than one large meal a day and to avoid feeding your GSD before strenuous exercise.
Anal furunculosis is a distressing auto immune condition which can be controlled with expensive drugs for a while but will inevitably progress as is the condition CDRM which is a degenerative disease which will ultimately lead to the loss of use of the dogs back legs and then bowel/urinary incontinence.
For whatever reason there seems to be an increasing number of GSD’s suffering from PI – pancreatic insufficiency, which presents as chronic watery diarrhoea and failure to thrive. This condition is treatable with expensive pancreatic enzymes and a low fat diet but the regime must be strictly adhered to.
Epilepsy is also more common these days and although it can be controlled by drugs, usually tolerance eventually occurs which will often result in the loss of control of the fits and the likelihood of brain damage as a result of prolonged uncontrolled fitting.
To protect your new puppy and in order to try to minimise long term or future health problems, it is vital that a high quality feeding regime is adopted from the start. German shepherds often have digestive problems so it is important to find a quality food that your dog likes and one that doesn’t upset the digestion. The German Shepherd Dog Breed Essential Health Information
September 16th, 2010The German Shepherd breed is an excellent choice for a canine companion. However, just like many other popular breeds, there are certain health problems that you need to be aware of. Here are a few of the most prevalent German Shepherd dog health issues to look out for:
Developmental bone and joint disease is a problem common to many large dog breeds, affecting the younger animals. If your dog is affected, he may show no symptoms at all, or he may demonstrate pain or lameness, and seem cautious about movement. Hip dysplasia may cause leg muscles to actually waste.
Many German Shepherds also suffer from Hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of the cells of the interior lining of the blood vessels. This condition can affect the skin, heart, liver, and spleen, as well as other organs. If you dog has Hemangiosarcoma, he may display weakness, light-colored gums, a distended abdomen, or even physical collapse.
Another German Shepherd dog health problem is weakness in the hind legs. This can also include wobbliness or a lack of coordination in the affected limbs. Multiple factors can cause this, including bone or spinal degeneration or possibly a slipped disc in the dog’s back.
Another problem to look out for is a diseased thyroid gland which will cause either over or under-production of thyroid hormones in some dogs. If your dog is experiencing skin infections, lethargy, hair loss, or cold intolerance it could indicate a thyroid problem.
Keep a keen eye on the eyes of your German Shepherd, especially if you notice apparent squinting, excess tearing or discharge, redness, or rubbing of the eyes. You should also be alert for any growths over the eye, regardless of the color. A condition called Pannus, an inflammation of the dog’s cornea, could cause any of these problems and be detrimental to your dog’s optical health.
A bacterial infection of the skin, sometimes accompanied by puss, is known as Pyoderma and can be a problem in German Shepherds. It is unknown what causes this condition, but it may be due to an immune deficiency. Your dog may have this if he displays pimples or sores, hair loss, redness or other abnormal skin conditions. Some dogs also become lethargic, or lose their interest in food.
A first step to avoiding these German Shepherd dog health issues is to make sure that your dog does not come from a breeder where other dogs had these issues. Watch your dog carefully, and be sure to consult your Vet if your dog displays any symptoms, or behavior out of the ordinary.

Health Troubles for Rottweilers?
September 12th, 2010Despite the fact that Rottweilers are strong and intimidating dogs, this breed is afflicted with quite a few healthy problems that can shorten their lifespan considerably. The average lifespan of the breed is 8 to 10 years which is relatively short when compared to other similarly sized breeds. Rottweilers make very loyal and protective companions but require a lot of care and attention as the breed is prone to dominance issues. Owners of this breed should be assertive yet gentle and a lot of exercise and mental stimulation should be given to the dog if boredom is to be avoided. A bored Rottweiler can develop destructive behavior.
Sadly the breed is susceptible to many health issues due to genetic and hereditary causes and one of the most common health problems the breed suffers from is bone and joint disease. Hip and elbow dysplasia is rife among the breed and special care should be taken not to breed diseased parents as the condition is hereditary. Another joint disease common in Rotteweilers is osteochondrosis dissecans. Osteochondrosis dissecans is a type of arthritis that affects the cartilage in joints and causes it to crack and fragment exposing the bones. Although supplements and surgery can help dogs afflicted with dysplasia and arthritis, the conditions are not curable, only supportive care is possible and this is why it is important to research the genetic background of any puppy you are considering buying or adopting. Appropriate exercise is important with these dogs and excessive exercise (especially when the dog is young) can trigger an underlying genetic condition so care should be taken.
Rottweilers are also prone to cancer, particularly osteosarcoma (bone cancer). Fragile and easily broken bones are a sign that the dog may be suffering from this form of cancer. Bone cancer typically produces tumors within the bones which cause weakening of bone cells and swelling. X-rays are used to determine if bone structure has been affected but a biopsy is required if the diagnosis is to be confirmed. The prognosis of osteosarcoma is usually not good and amputation is commonly recommended.
Another serious condition Rottweilers are susceptible to is bloat or gastric dilatation volvulus. This can occur in large barreled dogs and commonly affects dogs that eat or drink quickly. When the dog eats quickly he gulps in air and this causes the stomach to twist and bloat. This twisting and bloating of the gut can quickly cause an obstruction which cuts off blood circulation and results in decreased blood pressure and organ death. Signs of bloat include restlessness, foaming at the mouth, lethargy and gagging and it is vital to seek emergency veterinary attention immediately as the condition can be lethal within a very short period of time.
Being prone to obesity, Rottweilers are vulnerable to heart conditions such as sub-aortic stenosis. This condition is caused by fats and extra tissues forming in the aortic valve of the heart which results in blood flow obstruction. The heart then has to pump harder to compensate and while some dogs can live a full lifespan with the condition, it can cause instant death in others. If the dog has a heart murmur this is an indication that the condition exists.

Golden Retriever’s Common Illnesses – The 3 Major Health Affectors
September 5th, 2010Because they have been so popular over the last 50 years or so, Golden Retrievers have been over-bred, resulting in a genetic predisposition to experience specific health problems. Unfortunately, as greedy breeders often fail to screen their breeding animals, additional hereditary health problems are introduced to the breed. If you have a Golden, or plan to bring one into your home, you should know about the more common hereditary problems that may reduce the quality or length of your Golden Retriever’s life.
Health Problems Known to Be Inherited by Golden Retrievers
Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: When growing hip joints don’t form properly, juvenile and adult Retrievers may have an uneven gait or even severe lameness. This inheredited disorder is common to many large dogs, and while is not usually noticeable in puppies, hip dysplasia will begin to show when your Golden is between four and nine months old. The severity of the condition varies greatly from dog to dog, but most Goldens with hip dysplasia will develop arthritis as they age. Moderate exercise, weight control, and inflammatory medications will help with the discomfort of this problem. Not all Golden Retrievers will show, or even know about, their hip dysplasia if it’s a mild form. Golden’s with hip dysplasia can live long, happy lives, but they should not be bred.
Like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia is developmental problem in young dogs. It is not as common as hip dysplasia, but it can be aggravated by over-feeding and too much nutrition in early puppyhood. Care and treatment are the same as for hip dysplasia. And, of course, Golden Retrievers with hip dysplasia should not be bred.
Eye Disease: Golden Retrievers frequently suffer from hereditary cataracts. They can range from mild problems that do not interfere with your Golden’s vision to severe cataracts that cause blindness as the dog ages. Eyelid and eyelash problems may be hereditary, though not all are. When the lids or lashes turn in, they may irritate the eyeball. Depending on the severity of this problem, surgery may be necessary. Because it’s hard to tell whether eye diseases result from heredity or environment, it’s best not to breed a Golden Retriever with frequent or chronic eye problems.
Heart Disease: Golden Retrievers are known to inherit Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis (SAS) that may be hard to detect. Heart murmur is the best indicator, although it is not always present when the problem exists. Your veterinarian may be able to identify the problem by listening with a stethoscope or more invasive necropsy. If your Golden has SAS, consult with your veterinerian about the best treatments.
Golden Retriever Health Problems Suspected to be Inherited
Epilepsy: Characterized by seizures, epilepsy can result from environmental sources and viral infections. While watching your Golden Retriever go through a seizure is very uncomfortable, it may not be dangerous to your dog’s long-term quality of life. You can get medications from your vet to control the seizures. Do not breed a Golden Retriever that has seizures to avoid the chance of passing the disorder on to its puppies.
Skin Allergies: The most common medical problem that Golden Retrievers experience is skin allergies, although it’s difficult to know if they are genetic or environmental in nature. Your Golden may have skin allergies if it obsessively bites or scratches. It can even create bald spots in its coat if it goes untreated. Skin allergies are a natural reaction to flea, mite, and tick bites and can be reduced or avoided by regular grooming and shampooing with commercial flea and tick products. Your Golden could also be allergic to mold and other indoor air pollutants. Regular house-cleaning should reduce the problem. Diet can be very important to treating and avoiding allergic reactions in Golden Retrievers, so do your research to find the appropriate feeding regimen for your dog.
Hypothyroidism: Golden Retrievers affected by this failure of the thyroid gland to function properly may be obese or have problems maintaining a healthy coat. Some Golden’s with hypothyroidism will also have seizures. However, most problems should resolve upon the administration of oral medicines. Assuring your Golden is generally healthy by providing a balanced nutritious diet, plenty of exercise, and a safe living environment will do much to prevent or reduce the impacts of hypothyroidism. Goldens with this problem may have more difficulty breeding than you’d expect, although it is recommended that you do not even try to breed a Golden Retriever with this or other hereditary conditions.
Tips on Selecting and Caring for Your Golden Retriever
These are a few of the medical problems often found in Golden Retrievers. It’s an unfortunate irony that the more popular a dog is, the more likely breeding is to bring out health problems specific to the breed. One way to avoid these problems is to be very careful in selecting the breeder, shelter, or pet store that supplies your dog. Insist on reviewing the dog’s records, and inspect the facility. Knowing that the offerer has a passionate love for Golden Retrievers is one way to assure your Golden is not plagued by the problems that result from breeding and over-breeding unhealthy dogs.
No matter what symptoms your Golden Retriever exhibits, the careful pet owner does not jump to conclusions or make uneducated diagnoses. If you are concerned about your Golden, be sure to take it to the vet as soon as you can. Rely on the education and experience of a certified veterinarian in identifying health problems and treating them.
