Dogs have served as protectors and companions for many centuries and although most dogs are good at alerting when there is a potential intruder in the vicinity, there are some specific breeds of dogs that are best suited for acting as guard dogs. These breeds include the Doberman, the German Shepherd, the American Bulldog and the Rottweiler. Protector dogs differ from watchdogs in that they have been bred to be very territorial and aggressive and in a situation involving an intrusion or danger to a household or their family they will respond with aggression to protect their territory or human pack members. This makes these dogs ideal for protecting property and people.

Dobermans are highly intelligent and elegant dogs. Their athletic build makes them well suited for responding with speed to any perceived threats. While experts are unsure of their ancestry, Dobermans make ideal guard dogs. Dobermans are extremely loyal dogs that generally have a very stable temperament but it is important to carefully select a good bloodline from a reputable breeder as the breed is prone to being high strung and nervous, so choosing a dog from a bloodline that has proven itself as being of good temperament is crucial.

German Shepherds have been used for protection for many years and they are so good at their role that many police forces around the world use German Shepherds in various branches of police work. German Shepherds are well known for their high intelligence and they are considered to be one of the most intelligent dogs which makes them very easy to train. German Shepherd dogs (GSD) have very protective instincts and they make great family pets with the proper amount of training and socialization. Choosing a good bloodline and enrolling your pup in obedience training classes at an early age will result in a protective dog that is both loyal and obedient.

American Bulldogs are medium sized dogs with a stocky and muscular body and a rather quirky appearance but don’t let that fool you, these dogs make excellent guard dogs. Bred for their strength and stamina, American Bulldogs are known for their persistence and courage. American Bulldogs are naturally playful and curious and require proper socialization to develop into obedient and well behaved dogs and to render them less stubborn and willful. With proper training these dogs make endearing protective companions that will never cease to amaze you with their interesting personalities.

Rottweilers are among the most famous protector breeds and with their large, muscular and intimidating build, it comes as no surprise that these dogs are often used in police work and guarding. The Rottweiler is an ancient breed that was originally used to protect and herd livestock and this can be seen in their intense protective nature. They are very intelligent dogs that are highly trainable but they require an assertive owner. Proper obedience training at an early age makes these dogs excellent family pets and they can be extremely child friendly and fun loving despite negative media the breed has been receiving. Care should be taken to select a pup from a reputable breeder who has been breeding dogs that are even tempered and manageable. Novice owners may find the breed a bit of a handful as these dogs need professional training and constant supervision as they are prone to dominance issues and will constantly challenge for position.

Qualities desirable in guard dogs also make them aggressive and potentially dangerous so it is crucial to provide these dogs with proper training and socialization if they are to develop into reliable canine citizens. Most of the negative misconceptions surrounding these dogs are due to inexperienced owners not providing proper time and training to these dogs. Given proper training, these breeds of dogs will not think twice of sacrificing themselves to protect you, your family and your property. They are truly worthy of our admiration and respect and should be treated as such.

Guard dogs: Can a German Shepherd be a good guard dog and also be good with small children?

People thinking about getting a guard dog for their home often ask me this question: “Can a German Shepherd be a good guard dog and also be good with small children?

Before answering the question I want to know more about the home in which the German Shepherd is going to live, so I reply by asking this question::

“Do you intend keeping the dog confined in your back yard, or will the dog be a house dog and companion for your children?”

I then tell them:

“If your main reason for wanting to get a dog is guard your property and the dog is not going to be a house dog, then perhaps the German Shepherd Dog is not the right dog for you.”

I go on to explain that I have been breeding German Shepherds for more than 40 years and although my dogs are all excellent guard dogs, I have never ever experienced any problems with my dogs displaying aggression towards children. The reason for this is because all my dogs, over the years, have been brought up with small children. First with my own children and now with my grandchildren.

A German Shepherd is a remarkably intelligent, sensitive animal that thrives on human companionship, love and attention. If the dog is left on its own and its main purpose is to guard the home, the dog will do this job satisfactorily. But the animal will never develop its full potential. In fact there is a distinct danger that the dog might become vicious. There is also a possibility that the dog may not be good with children.

A German Shepherd, brought up with the family and with children that has some basic obedience training, can prove to be completely reliable with children and trustworthy in every way. It can also be a dependable guard and protection dog – an excellent dual purpose dog.

In recent times, with the huge increase of housebreaking, theft and violent crimes, it has become more and more necessary to have a reliable guard dog at your home. A well-bred German Shepherd Dog, with a strong protective instinct, can prove to be an exceptionally good guard as well as a delightful companion for your children.

If you want a dog that will be a companion for your children and also a good guard dog,there are some important points you must consider before getting a German Shepherd Dog.

These are questions you must ask yourself:

•1. Will your dog be brought up in the family and play with the children?

•2. Are you prepared to take your dog for basic obedience training?

•3. Have you seen both parents of the pup you intend buying?

•4. Are you satisfied both parents have sound, stable temperaments?

•5. Does at least one of the parents – either the Sire or Dam – show signs of having a strong protective instinct?

This last question is very important. It is an unfortunate fact that many German Shepherd Dogs being bred today lack the strong protective instinct that was once a very marked feature of most German Shepherd Dogs. This applies to many top winning show dogs.

If you definitely need a good guard dog, in addition to one that is excellent with your children, there is no point in getting a sweet-natured, very friendly dog that is going to welcome every intruder like a long lost friend.

A good, well-bred German Shepherd Dog can provide you with the best of both worlds – an excellent guard dog and one that is also good with your children. It doesn’t necessarily have to come from show-winning stock, as long as it is well-bred and comes from parents with sound temperaments. .

Before you buy your German Shepherd Dog pup try and find out as much as you can about the temperament of the pup’s Sire and Dam. If at all possible, find out what you can about their pedigree and bloodlines. There are many knowledgeable German Shepherd Dog breeders who will be only too willing to provide you with the information you need.

The Rottweiler and the Boxer ? Standing Guard Over You

If you’re looking for a Guardian Angel in dog form, you might consider either the Rottweiler or the Boxer. Both are Guardian Dogs, which were bred to watch over people, property or livestock.

Unlike some Guardian breeds, the Rottie and the Boxer have always lived closely with humans protecting them, thus making them suitable family pets. These dogs are comfortable with family and friends but wary of strangers. Despite their sometimes goofy appearance, both breeds are top notch watch dogs, watching over you as if your soul were in their paws. If they have children to watch over, you may find yourself having to tear them away from their charges. Supervision with outsiders is imperative, as a Rottweiler may misinterpret a wrestling game between your child and a friend or a Dobie might think someone running toward you is a threat. The key is to avoid these situations and always be aware of the protective instinct these breeds have. This instinct makes the Rottie and the Boxer excellent body guards and shows why they excel in work as police dogs or search and rescue dogs.

The Rottweiler and Boxer have a lot in common. They are both formidable dogs whose presence is likely to dissuade a robber or the postman. Both tend to dislike hot weather and both love children. One big difference is that Rotties show up on Breed Specific Legislation at times while Boxers seem to have beat the rap. This is yet another BSL inconsistency, considering their goal to ban dogs who are like Pit Bulls and the Boxer is the one who shares a common ancestry to Bully Dogs. The Rottie is ancient, having started as a Roman cattle dog knock-off in Rottweil, Germany. The Boxer gets his name from his connection to fighting dogs – when he fights. he tends to use his forelegs as if boxing.

If choosing between these two Guardian Dogs, consider size, personality and activity level. The Rottie can weigh between 75 to 130 pounds, while the Boxer is between 50 to 80. This makes a Rottie look more intimidating but when your dog is 13 and you have to lift him up the stairs, the Boxer seems more agreeable. Both dogs are often reserved when meeting new people but the Boxer is often decidedly friendlier and more playful than the Rottweiler. Likewise, a Boxer has a higher activity level than a Rottie, who is usually content with one slow walk a day. A family who is active with older children will enjoy a Boxer immensely; a family with younger children may want to choose a Rottie.

A few final considerations before choosing either breed:

1. You may run across some prejudice from people who do not understand that these dogs may look formidable but they are only threatening when provoked. This has led to Rotties being put on BSL lists in some towns or states and it’s possible the Boxer could be next. Luckily, BSL is still limited and often dogs on the list are accepted by the community with extra insurance and muzzling.

2. Both breeds potentially will have hip dysplasia, kidney trouble, neurological disorders and thyroid disease. The Boxer may also have breathing problems because of his Bulldog-like muzzle.

3. The time you spend on training, which will be substantial since Guardian Dogs can be stubborn and often challenge the Alpha, is made up for in the ease of their grooming. These dogs have short hair and they do not shed much. They are both also known, especially the Boxer, for not having the typical “doggie smell.”

Both breeds represent an excellent choice for a family looking for protection or just canine companions who will help you may a quick beeline through a crowd or scare off your nosy neighbors. And though both breeds originated in Germany, they truly embody the American spirit of fearlessness, loyalty.

Guard dog Attack training German Shepherd/Malinois k9-1.com

Personal protection attack dog training video of a 7 month old German Shepherd/ Belgian Malinois mix puppy. Although this dog isn’t old enough to do real guard dog work it is being prepared to do real protection work… sort of like sending a child to karate class. He will finish guard dog training at about 18 months old. Quality protection dog training takes patience, respect, and knowledge. If a dog is trained with yelling and intimidation…how do you expect them to do protection work on a yelling man? Beware of people who sell sport dogs (aka schutzhund trained dogs) as “personal protection dogs. Sport dogs are trained to look pretty doing specific protection routines on a training field and may be confused in a real situation when there is not a bite sleeve or protection suit to bite. Also these types of protection dogs are trained to take stick hits instead of avoiding them and attcking that arm. This is because you can’t hold the stick with an arm within sleeve and schutzhund is a sport that is meant to prove a dogs bravery and show they are worthy of breeding, therefore they are trained to take stick hits that are always used with a stick that won’t really hurt the dog and are always hit on safe spots of the body. This is setting the dog up for failer when they must fight a person for real that is planning on hitting them in the head with an iron bar.
