Nismo 9 month lab searching & finding her kong in the snow labrador retriever

February 12th, 2011

She will search (and be successful) for ten times as long as this with ZERO encouragement, but since this was her first time searching in snow, there was LOTS of encouragement. I think I do a good job here of keeping her on track while walking the fine line between giving encouragement to continue searching (and in which area I want her to check) without cluing her in to the location to avoid her becoming dependent on (and waiting for) my cues, instead of searching & figuring it out on her own like she is supposed to. She had a hard time on the 2nd throw from all of the snow being contaminated. The red kong is her “special” one, it had a tiny amount of peanut butter smudged inside on this occasion. Also, this video is a very useful tool as it allows me to rewind and watch closely for HER cues & signals. Notice the excitement in her tail when she gets a hit, and the way it stops completely the instant she makes the actual find. If you watch closely you can also tell how strong the hit is, if it is getting weaker or stronger, and more. Thanks for reading & constructive criticism from others who work with dogs is greatly appreciated.

There are currently hundreds of Labrador breeders, but, sadly, not all of them are as passionate as most people are about dogs. In fact, a small percentage of certified breeders simply look at their work as nothing but a business enterprise. Though this kind of individual is really rare and you may never come across one of this type, you would still have to be extra careful if you want to get a puppy or two. By doing so, you know that you are getting a pet that’s evenly matched with your personality.

Your search for great Labrador breeders should start with the question whether you want to get someone who is living near your area or a breeder who’s based across the country. Distance won’t be a problem if you want to get the best, but you might want to meet a far more accessible breeder at the same time. No matter how far he or she is, you should always consult other enthusiasts and experts for feedback and recommendations. This way, you would have a testimony of how good or bad a specific breeder is even before you talk to him or her.

There are certain clubs for Labrador retrievers and more often than not, they are filled with people who are either breeders themselves or can readily recommend a good one. These clubs can give solid assurances especially if it is a prestigious society and they closely regulate the behavior and performance of their members. You don’t have to be a member yourself to get the names of prestigious Labrador retriever breeders among their ranks since they readily provide it for you. Aside from calling them outright, you can also check their sites or contact them via e-mail.

Labrador retriever breeders are not just persons who sell puppies and other dogs of any ages. They have a strict duty to the community since they make sure that there won’t be an overpopulation of certain breeds, Aside from that, they are also effective in looking out for any genetic diseases that may come out from their charges’ bloodlines. As extreme as it may sound, Labrador breeders are guardians of the type of dogs they breed.

How to Look for the Best Golden Retriever Breeder

Pet shops are known to go for high profits. Meaning, they do not spend plenty of money in breeding or caring for their golden retrievers. As a result, many puppies become sickly. If you’re an impulse buyer, you will easily get fooled by pet shops and you will end up with a lethargic pet.

Scene and Heard: Finding the good in Raider Nation
Call it Raiders Row. In the section of the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot near the trolley station, there was one black canopy, one pirate flag after another on Sunday. The Chargers were playing, and eventually getting their behinds kicked 28-13 by, the Raiders, and it was as if Bekins packed up and moved the “Black Hole” from Oakland. Rap music blared at ear-numbing levels from very expensive …

Finding a Reliable Rottweiler Breeder

September 22nd, 2010

This article will focus on the guidelines to assist you in finding a responsible and reputable breeder.

Take your time selecting a breeder. You may ask for recommendations from vets, friends who own a Rottweiler, local breeding clubs, if available, or you may contact the American Kennel Club. If you see advertisements in newspapers for “puppies for sale”, do not inquire. People who breed their dogs with their friend’s dogs are called backyard breeders and you do not want a puppy from these people. A backyard breeder will have no idea if the parents of the puppies are healthy or if they have some medical defect that could be inherited by the puppies. A breeder will screen their dogs for genetic problems and will be able to give prospective owners documentation showing their puppies are from a litter whose parents are free of any genetic problems.

A reputable breeder will show their dogs or at least participate in some dog related events. These events may include obedience, agility, herding or numerous other dog events. A responsible breeder only breeds to improve the dog breed. Through participation in dog events they are able to compare their dogs with other breeder’s dogs. If you find a breeder who does not compete in dog events and does not participate in some type of dog club (i.e. obedience, schutzhund, herding, all-breed, etc) you probably don’t want to choose a puppy from this person.

A good breeder knows their breed and knows what medical problems (congenital defects) are present in the breed. Two medical problems that seem to occur frequently in Rottweilers are hip dyplasia and entropion (eyelid defect). A breeder will inform you of any problems in the breed and what kind of testing has been done with her dogs to make sure she/he isn’t breeding animals with defective genes. An ethical breeder will guarantee that the puppy you take home is in good health and will take the puppy/dog back if a genetic problem is found that debilitates the life of the dog. This will be covered in the contract that you must read and sign before you become the owner/guardian of the puppy.

Some good questions to ask the breeder are:

• How long have you been breeding Rottweilers? (Look for experience)

• Are the puppies parents on site and may I see them? The mother should be on site and probably not the father. Remember a good breeder breeds to advance the dogs breed. It is not likely that a person has exceptional male and female dogs to mate and advance the breed. If both parents are on site be cautious.

• How many litters do you have in a year? If they have more then two litters be very cautious. They may be breeding more for profit then advancement of the breed.

• Are the puppies house raised? Raising puppies in a house and around people is a great start on their socialization. If the puppies are raised in a kennel, that could be fine as long as they are around people and are introduced to the home so they may become accustomed to sounds, sights and smells. You want the puppy use to a home environment as they will be living inside when you take them home.

• What kind of guarantee do you offer? The breeder should offer a health and genetic disease guarantee along with a guarantee to take back the puppy or dog, no matter the age, if you are unable to keep it. This is not to say that they will return your money; they will take back their dog to keep it safe and keep it out of the animal shelter.

A good breeder will screen you as a prospective buyer. They want to make sure you will be a good fit for their puppy and are informed about the breed. Many of the questions may seem intrusive or nosey but a breeder wants to insure her puppy is going to a person who plans to take care of their pet for the next eight to twelve years. You are committing yourself to being responsible for this animal for their lifetime.

Before you decide on the breed of puppy you want to adopt, read all you can and go to dog shows. Being around the different breeds will give you a chance to see the dog in action. Maybe a Rottweiler isn’t for you but another breed is. Get to know the dog before making the commitment.

Finding The Best Collie Training Tips

July 21st, 2010

Training any breed of dog can be a difficult task, even for professional trainers, and each breed of dog has different personality traits and will need to be trained in a specific way.

This is most especially accurate for Collies because for their huge size, proper training is crucial because even as puppies, their intellect makes them ill- behaved.  You can find a lot of resources obtainable in finding Collie training tips and knowing and following these tips will make training more effective and easier.

Ways Of Finding Collie Training Tips

There have been a lot of books authored and written by a lot dog training experts focusing on Collies which can be used effectively for training Collie puppies to be housebroken and training of a household pet over the years.  These books are not limited to Collies alone but also the wide range of training tips for dogs of different types of breed and all ages.  It will be dependable to the person training the Collie to make any revisions to the tips that may not be working for Collies as only some work effectively.

One of the most convenient places in finding great Collie training tips would be the internet.  This would be great for owners who do not want their dogs to be trained by professional trainers but train their dogs themselves.  You will find a lot of different websites on the net that are devoted to Collie training.  These websites also explains the diverse personalities a dog may have which can make training hard to achieve.

When looking for Collie training tips on the internet, it is important to choose a website that has a reputation for excellence when it comes to Collies, because there are many people building websites that contain no valuable information and contain techniques that could be harmful to the dog.

It is best to use at least two sources of internet information when looking for Collie training tips to be sure that the information that is found is actually valid training advice.

One of the best ways in learning Collie training tips is attending dog training classes being handled by professional dog trainers.  The classes are planned accordingly to teach owners of dogs the basic rules of dog training and to provide owners some tips on how they can continuously train their dogs at home.

Generally, dog training classes are scheduled in the evening as this would be convenient for dog owners who have work during day time.  Dog owners have the option to attend classes once or twice or until the owner is comfortable in using the Collie training techniques and tips on their own.

Finding The Right German Shepherd Puppies

July 8th, 2010

German Shepherds make excellent pets because they are athletic, energetic and bond well with their owners. Many know the German Shepherd breed because of their high trainability as a search and rescue dog or a police dog. When selecting between German Shepherd puppies for sale you should consider some health and breed standards. Before you purchase any puppy you will want to have an initial meeting with the puppy you are thinking buying. Observe how the puppy reacts to both your voice and touch. The puppy should be affectionate and eager to make friends.

Later in life some German Shepherds can have a tendency towards aggression. If you don’t train your puppy early then you should at the very least choose one with a good temperament to start. You also want to inquire about any socialization training the dog has had. For German Shepherd’s early socializing is extremely important and any methods the former owners use is crucial. It is important for the puppy to interact with other dogs and humans every day and early.

Next you should request to see both parents of the puppy if you are buying from a breeder. Carefully observe how the parents react to you as a stranger, make sure there are no signs of unwarranted aggression. The litter will inherit the temperament of the parents. For health reasons you should also make sure the parents move easily and unencumbered. Make sure you view the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals or OFA certification for the puppys’ parents.

German Shepherds are prone to hip dysphasia and it is a predisposition that can be passed on to litters. So when considering German Shepherd puppies for sale you want to find out the rating the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals maintains on all registered canines based off the X-rays of the dog’s bone structure. Any dog prone to hip dysphasia shouldn’t be bred and you shouldn’t purchase a dog from anyone who doesn’t have Orthopedic Foundation for Animals certification for their dogs.

Next carefully look over the puppy you are considering. The eyes should be clear and alert and the gums should be pink and healthy. There should be no foreign matter in the ears. Without being overly energetic the puppy should be playful. When considering German Shepherd puppies for sale you should carefully consider the puppy’s lineage. An American Kennel Club puppy from a breeder will have family charts that show not only the puppy’s parents but also the ancestors of the puppy for several generations on both sides of the family. A good breeder will be happy to show you this detailed family tree and even provide you a copy for your records.

After you have chosen and purchased you German Shepherd puppy you should have it evaluated by a veterinarian right away, they will need to be de-wormed and get all their shots. To socialize your puppy with other dogs and human beings you should take them on walks, set up play dates with dogs or friends and take them with you into pet stores when you shop if it is allowed.

Jan Ryan is a breeder of German Shepherd puppies and can offer tips on what to consider when choosing your new puppy. When you are looking for German Shepherd puppies you will need to take several steps in order to find a healthy and good puppy. After getting a new puppy it is important to know proper German Shepherd puppy care.
