Every Chihuahuas are different from each other. Each comes with a unique temperament and personality which means that each requires a slightly different disciplinary approach for training. Research and experience have found out that the best approach that you can use for training is “Positive reinforcement” which means rewarding your chihuahua for good behaviors. Chihuahuas respond well to treats and as long as you are giving them positive attentions.
Positive Reinforcement
You might wonder how positive reinforcement works. Actually, it means rewarding your dog for doing anything good. For example, if your chihuahua goes outside for eliminating purposes, then you should give them a treat. If he doesn’t bark when your relatives come, you should again give them a treat. If you reward their good behaviors with treats, they begin to relate these treats with positive behaviors. However if you punish or scold them for bad behaviors, then that may grow abnormal behaviors in them like hiding under the bed, being stubborn, etc. Such behaviors can result in insecure feeling and resentment. So, positive reinforcement is only the best way to instill positive behaviors in them.
Developmental Understanding
There are developmental milestones in chihuahua that enhance their ability to become perfectly trained. For instance, your chihuahua is not physically and cognitively mature enough to become potty trained at 2 months of age. His mind is not fully comprehended with the concept that he is not allowed to eliminate inside and that he will be rewarded for doing that outside. So, you should understand and be perceptive to their individual development as their bladder is also not well developed to the point where he could have control of urinary urges.
Clicking Method
Clicking method is used to speed up chihuahua training. For example, when you provide treat to your chihuahua, click the clicker at the same time he takes it. This helps them in associating the positive behaviors with treats quickly. Slowly, you can also wean your chihuahua off the treats and clicking once they learn the desired trick and start behaving in a disciplined way. You can buy the clicker at any pet store For $5 or less.

In todays age, Chihuahuas are one the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. For us Chihuahua owners, it’s hard to imagine life without them. However, with all the growing popularity surrounding them, many people don’t know the different breeds of Chihuahuas. In this article, I will help you seperate the truth from the fiction regarding the different breeds.
I bet you’ve heard the term “Teacup”, “Miniature” or “Toy” Chihuahua, you may even think these are a specific breed of Chihuahua. Well, the truth is that these terms are not recoginized by any major kennel association. Terms like these are used by breeders soley for the purpose of trying to add more monetary value to their Chihuahuas. Whats unfortunate is that when breeders start trying to breed their Chihuahuas to become so small, they start to develop serious health problems, some life-threatening. If you are looking to purchase a Chihuahua you should consider staying away from sellers who claim to have these. You don’t want to deal with unethical breeders.
So, what are the different Chihuahua breeds? There are only two different ones; short-haired, and long-haired Chihuahuas. The long-haired Chihuahua has, as you probably might have guessed, longer hair than the other breed. They may have more hair, but the long-haired Chihuahua actually sheds very little. This makes them a perfect choice for people who suffer from allergies. The short-haired Chihuahua has a much shorter coat of hair and sheds a bit more than the long-haired.
Chihuahuas are one of the most loving pets one could have. They are loving, affectionate, and downright cute! However, we are responsible for their well-being and safety. Let’s take care of our Chihuahuas and show them the love that they deserve.
I hope this article sheds some light on the facts about the different Chihuahua breeds. Remember to avoid breeders claiming to have breeds other than long-haired and short-haired, and pass this information on to any other Chihuahua lovers that you may know.

Dog grooming isn’t just for Poodles these days. No, indeed having a regular schedule for grooming can not only keep your dog fit and joyful, but its becoming quite popular. This process is also a bonus for helping keeping your pet free of parasites, eliminating skin problems, maintaining their good dental hygene, and giving them a fantastic looking coat.
Now, since we already know that having your pet pampered every now and then can bring out the best in them, and you, what should you typically expect from a professional dog grooming service?
These sessions can last between 1 – 2 hours tops, and usually address all of the canine hygene needs. This is usually what you can expect for this service.
A very thorough bath, sometimes it can include a flea dip, removing of tangles in hair, and a complete brushing Styling if you decide to request this (bandanas, bows, rhinestones, etc)
Having nails clipped Having ears cleaned and looked at for parasites Having dental care done.
So how often should I get my dog groomed?
This part is up to you and the breed of dog that you have. There are breeds that require more attention, more often. Some types of dogs rarely need this. This is also why I suggest that before going through with a dog adoption or buying a new one, to investigate the breed to see what the grooming shoul be like.
Here is a really good guide to give you a better idea of grooming frequency.
1. Anything curly-coated. Pets like Poodles tend to contain really dense hair and a curly coat. Its very resistant to water. Typically a dog like this will need to be groomed about every two months.
2. Short-coated. Corgis and Boxers are two dogs as examples that have short ense coats. They should be brushed regularly, but only need to be bathed one to two times a year.
3. Long-coated. Sheepdogs and Collies will typically need a daily brushing to maintain their coat. They should also be bathed about every other month.
4. Silk-coats. Cocker Spaniels and Pekines are two examples of silk-coated dogs. They should technically be brushed daily and probably will require and very detailed grooming session about 4 – 5 times per year.
5. Wire-coated. Dogs like Terriers and Schnauzers require a lot of grooming. Bathing should be done about every three months or so, and the coat should be trimmed every 6 – 8 weeks.
6. Smooth-coated. Doberman Pinschers and Retrievers are some dogs with smooth coats.
These dogs are actually extremely low maintenance. Bathing and brushing here and there is perfectly fine for them.

Shetland Sheepdogs or “Shelties” share a lot of aesthetic traits with the collie and are often called the Miniature Collie. The reality is that the breeds, despite a few similar bloodlines, are very, very different! Collies and Shelties were developed in different regions (though both in Scotland), and despite the fact that both breeds are intended for herding, each was bred with completely separate strengths and weaknesses.
The Shetland Sheepdog is named for its region of origin, the Shetland Islands. The breed was developed in the early 19th century and recognized by the AKC in 1911, whereas Collies, also a Scottish breed, are documented as far back as the 1600s. Both breeds were used as herding dogs and are classified in the AKC Herding Group, but their jobs were slightly different. The Collie was intended to herd and protect sheep, while the Shetland Sheepdog’s primary task was to keep the sheep away from crops that they could potentially trample, eat, and destroy.
The most obvious difference between the Collie and the Sheltie is their size. Shelties stand only 13 to 16 inches at the shoulder, while Collies tower over them at a shoulder height of 22 to 26 inches. Collies also weigh in at a minimum of 50 pounds, twice the maximum weight of a Shetland Sheepdog by AKC standards!
The Shetland Sheepdog earned its Miniature Collie nickname primarily because of their coat’s similarity to that of the rough-coated Collie. The smooth-coated Collie has a different appearance altogether, with a far shorter, silkier coat. The Shetland Sheepdog’s beautiful coat is due in no small part to the coat of the rough-coated Collie, as Collie bloodlines were used in the development of the Shetland Sheepdog.
The biggest difference between Collies and Shelties, besides their size of course, is in their personalities. They are both intelligent, hard-working breeds with significant herding skills and instincts, but the similarities end there. The Collie is a gentle, refined breed that carries itself eloquently. They are not loud dogs, rarely barking unless they are working or commanded to. They are unconcerned with strangers, but are still loving and affectionate with their owners and families. On the other side of the coin is the Shetland Sheepdog, which can be a bit if a goofball. Shelties love to run and play with anyone that will have them and are said to have a sense of humor.
Many people unfamiliar with the breed differences choose Shetland Sheepdogs for their pet because they feel a Collie is too large of a breed for city life. The irony in this decision is that Collies are much more docile and would likely be more content to relax with their owners and go for long walks, as opposed to the Sheltie who would probably like to run laps, catch frisbees and play all day!
Both breeds make fantastic dogs for families or single owners alike. They are both loving and good with children, and despite their varying activity levels, are both adaptable to any type of loving environment that suits their basic needs.

Different Chihuahua Types
Applehead, Appleheaded, Appledome, Apple-dome, Apple Chihuahuas: The term applehead Chihuahua refers to the shape of a baby Chihuahua’s head. The dome of the skull is broader than the jaw, giving rise to the description “applehead”. It takes into account that the top of the head has a slight depression. This depression is called a molera (Spanish for fontanel) and corresponds to the “soft spot” on a baby’s head. Some Chis have it–some don’t.
This is a “normal” Chihuahua. Applehead or Appledome refer to the 90 degree rise off the nose (muzzle) of the forehead. A Chihuahua will often have protruded eyes. These are features of a “standard” Chihuahua. A Chihuahua with a sloping forehead will often have eyes that are more recessed. Some people prefer this “look”, but technically it is not a preferred genetic trait because it does not adhere to the standard as established by the AKC. As with all purebred dogs, a Chihuahua “quality” is measured against a standard… This “quality” refers to the quality of the genes, not the physical health on the Chihuahua. Oftentimes these unique characteristics make some Chihuahuas more or less expensive.
Deer head , Deer Chihuahuas: A deer chihuahua has a sloped forehead… not an “apple-dome”, a 90 degree angle off the bridge of the nose… a deer chihuahua may also have deer-like slender, delicate paws… making them look like little deer. I’ve only seen it in smoothcoats, but I suppose there’s no reason it couldn’t occur in longcoats. Some folks prefer this look, although it does not represent the “Chihuahua Standard”.
Teacup Chihuahuas: NOBODY HAS TEACUPS!!! They is no such thing! “Teacup” is a marketing term… it is a cute name used to sway your dollars… that’s it. Small sized Chihuahuas are actually called teacup Chihuahuas – but there is no such breed in reality.Many backyard breeders specifically breed these small sized Chihuahuas and name them as Teacup Chihuahuas – and sell them at premium prices. But it has been seen, because of their tiny size, these small sized Chihuahuas are even more fragile and suffer from various genetic problems.
Tricolor Chihuahuas: They are so called because of 3 colors present in their coat.
Long Coat Chihuahuas: As the name suggests, they have a long coat. Some people believe that these long-coated Chihuahuas are a bit more reserved than the smooth coat ones. They are also called Long Hair Chihuahuas.
Smooth Coat Chihuahuas: They have short hairs. They are also called Short Hair Chihuahuas.

The smallest dog breed in the world, the Chihuahua was discovered in Mexico in 1850, and subsequently introduced to America. The popularization of the Chihuahua as a pet was a result of media coverage given to celebrities who adopt Chihuahuas as pets such as Marilyn Monroe and Paris Hilton. There are two official Chihuahua breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club today. These are the Long-haired Chihuahua and the Short-haired Chihuahua. Unofficially, other different breeds of Chihuahuas exist. These include the Teacup Chihuahua, Mini Chihuahua and Toy Chihuahua amongst others. The origins of these unofficial names were a result of Chihuahua breeders who dub their dogs accordingly based on their full grown size.
The Long-haired Chihuahua is characterized by their smooth undercoat and long overcoat. The texture of its coat is long, thin and smooth to touch. The Long-haired Chihuahua has large eyes and erect ears, similar to that of a Pomeranian. In fact, it is not difficult for most people to mistaken a Long-haired Chihuahua for a Pomeranian given such similar characteristics. Surprisingly, this Chihuahua breed sheds little hair as compared to its Short-haired cousin. As a result, it is relatively popular with people who suffer from allergies.
