Large dog breeds make wonderful pets, but because of their size there are some things you should consider before bringing one home. Big dogs take up a lot of space, need plenty of exercise and are able to eat huge amounts of food. They are also prone to hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis.

Large breed dogs need a good diet of high quality food which is specifically made for large dogs. They contain the correct nutritional balance for a large dog’s metabolism and most of them have additives for joint health. The larger size of pieces in the dog food helps to satisfy their hunger and chewing needs. When you are choosing a food make sure you take into account your dog’s age, weight and activity level.

You should have your dog seen yearly for a check-up and vaccinations to help them stay healthier and live a long life. Large dogs need plenty of exercise which will help reduce many of the medical problems found in larger dog breeds. In the mid 19th century they became popular as police dogs. During the first and second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service as war time guard dogs; since it is a natural instinct for them. Today they are still frequently used as guard, service and police dogs.

Bullmastiff
The Bullmastiff is a large powerful dog who can be bold and intimidating but is actually a gentle and laid-back dog. They are very intelligent and make good guard dogs and companions. Even though they look intense they are very playful and are good with children.

Bullmastiffs are people oriented dogs and love to be in the middle of all activities. They crave attention and will become very attached to their families. Bullmastiffs need a lot of exercise to keep them healthy and happy. They can be sensitive to extreme temperatures so make sure they are protected from the cold and the heat. These dogs are good companions and protectors and will always be loyal.

English Pointer
The English Pointer is known for being a gun dog and has a gentle and mannerly nature. They are alert and loyal. They are gentle with children and love to play. They have lots of energy and need plenty of room to run. They also need plenty of interaction with people to keep them mentally sharp.

Consider the Chweenie as Your Next Dog!

Mull over the Chweenie! Huh, you say?! The Dachshund Mix is a unique breed, merging all of the good characteristics of its relatives, the Chihuahua and the Miniature Dachshund.wholesale dog breeders do not produce this odd combination deliberately; but natural desire sometimes insists and voila! The part of the name “weenie” is taken from the nickname for Dachshunds: “weiner dogs” because of their elongated, slim, weiner bodies. The look is so cute you can barely keep from hugging them!

It has been suggested that the Chihuahua was developed to contain the rat population in Mexican cities, where the mutts used to roam in wholesale dog gangs to find prey. The Dachshund is nearly the contrary. It was trained as a working dog. It is a real scent hound, locating its target mainly by scent, although its hearing is very sharp as well. Its broad front, longer floppy ears (that can also perk up straight), squat limbs and extended back make it well-suited for going after burrowing prey and, in fact, it was at first a canine expert in hunting badgers. The Dachshund is amazingly steadfast, but not necessarily enamored of people other than its own. The miniature Dachshund has the characteristics of its bigger counterparts, but presented in a tiny torso. Even as a miniature dog, it is not inclined to exhibit the wholesale dog human worship that the Chihuahua wants.

Put Miniature Dachshund and Chihuahua together and what can you expect? A little mutt with ears that are either straight up or flopped down, barrel chest, extended back, but often without the stumpy limbs of the Dachshund. The Miniature Dachshund/Chihuahua exhibits some of the yappy characteristics of the Chihuahua, but hunting instinct runs deep and the chweenie usually will be enthused about the opportunity to seek out game in his backyard. The cheweenie does not understand that it is a miniature and won’t limit itself to small game, so don’t allow it to get loose in the fields! Don’t count on dressing up your chweenie or transporting it around with you to the upscale wholesale dog grooming salons; they are too “just dog” for the kind of pampering that Chihuahuas naturally inspire.

Choosing a Pet? Things to Consider Before Choosing a Pet

Consider whether you have time for a pet. They look to you for their food, water, veterinary treatments and love. If your children cannot or will not care for the pet, do you have time to do it. Did you know that in over half of households the female spouse or family member ends up taking care of the family dog or pet.

Now this is pretty much common sense but you should think about whether you are allowed to have a pet where you currently reside. Check the regulations if your are a tenant. If pets are allowed are you prepared for the extra amount of deposit money that will be required. Are you prepared for the carpet cleaning necessary when you move? These an other questions should be considered if you are a renter.

How many years are you willing to commit to this new pet? A pet can be a lifelong commitment depending on how old you are when you choose a puppy or other young pet. Personally I had a Dachshund that was with us for 17 years. Cats can live from 10 to 20 years subject to certain medical issues. Other pets like horses, turtles, parrots and other types of birds can live quite a bit longer even 30 to 40 years.

None of us have a crystal ball so we do not really know when we will get married, get divorced, relocate sometimes to another country, have children or maybe have grandma move in with us, you know, the one that hates animals. Do your best to look into the future to where a pet will fit in. Once adopted your pet becomes part of the family or to him, the pack. Later separation is hard on everyone.

If you should decide to choose a puppy or any type of young pet please know that younger animals require a lot more time to learn the ropes than adult dogs do. Plus, younger animals, especially dogs, do not appreciate being left alone. This is one way separation anxiety develops.

Younger animals need to be taught how to behave in the family or the pack. This cannot completely be done if the house is empty all day. Just as with children, traits developed at the younger ages are traits that stay with them most if not all of their lives. Proper training and interaction at the younger age will pay great dividends immediately and in later years.

Believe it or not there are many more considerations when choosing a pet. Those I will touch on in a different article. For now let me leave you by strongly suggesting that you make the decision about choosing a new pet a family decision.

Boxer Puppies – Will You Consider a White Boxer as a Pet?

A boxer puppy will grow up to be a medium sized dog, with a proportionate body. It is easy to care for a boxer, as it is a fairly active animal. All it needs is a brisk daily walk, and on occasions, a long walk will benefit both the owner and the pet. Grooming wise, it’s an easy task because this breed has short hair. Use a hard bristle brush to comb the hair on a regular basis to remove loose hair.

A boxer is a quick and intelligent animal. It is very loyal, and can get along with almost anyone. A young puppy can be easily integrated into the family due to its natural sociable nature. It can even get along quite well with a cat. But don’t tempt the dog with smaller animals like ducks or guinea pigs. A well trained dog can be told to leave these little animals alone. But you don’t want to risk having your dog misbehaving by presenting the opportunities!

In fact, the boxer is good with human beings that you can trust them to be with young children. Trainers love to work with them as they are easy to get along. Some boxers are so sensitive and intelligent that they are trained to carry out police work such as search and rescue.

When buying a boxer puppy, most people refer to the official breed standards, set by the AFC (American Kennel Club). But bear in mind that these are just guidelines to help you choose a healthy pup. They are not concrete laws that you have to follow. If you treat them as concrete laws, you may end up making the wrong decision. Here’s why.

The AFC standard states that a dog belongs to the boxer breed only if two thirds of its body color is not white. For this reason, many dog breeders find that they cannot register white boxers with the AFC. And this affects sales. Potential customers want to buy pups that are properly registered. They want the assurance from an authority that they are indeed paying for the right breed.

Unfortunately, many new pet owners, being inexperience, base their decisions solely on registrations. This results in many perfectly healthy white boxers being euthanize.

A white boxer gets its fur color due to genes inheritance. It is not an unhealthy animal, and it certainly is not an Albino. An Albino means a lack of pigment. You tell if a dog is an Albino just by looking at the color of the eyes. The white boxer is just like any other healthy boxer, except that most of its fur is white in color. It will still bear a small percentage of colored markings on various parts of its body such as the face.

However, the white boxer has a higher chance of becoming deaf after 6 to 8 weeks. This is caused by a lack of pigment cells in the inner ear. Without adequate sensory hairs, the hearing is affected. It is this lack of pigment cells that cause the coat of fur to be white as well.
