Dog Training Basics – Common Commands

]]>

A calm, obedient and faithful dog – it’s what we all want, right? To begin with, obedient and trained dogs are happier dogs, less likely to get into tussles with people or with other dogs. Another reason is that many communities require that the dogs living in their neighborhoods be well trained. This is especially true for many breeds thought to have aggression and behavior problems – large dog breeds such as german shepherds and rottweilers to name a couple. And of course pit bulls are almost synonymous with aggression in many people’s minds.

Now, I have a rottweiler myself, and she’s the soppiest thing out. So I don’t personally subscribe to the view that particular breeds are necessarily aggressive. But nevertheless, large dogs certainly do need to be adequately trained, just because of their size. Larger dogs can be very intimidating to people.

And of course, training your dog well will also make he or she a much better family companion, especially in households where there are young children. Many studies have shown that proper dog training makes a big impact when it comes to cutting down the number of dog bits and other behavior problems encountered by dog owning households.

When considering training your own dog, or having someone else help you train it, there are certain basic commands that must be mastered in order for a dog to be considered truly trained. These basic commands include:

No – The word No is one word that all dogs must learn. Training your dog to respond to this important word can save you a ton of trouble.

Sit – Training your dog to sit on command is a vital part of any dog training program.

Down – Lying down on command is more than just a cute trick; it is a key component of any successful dog training program.

Stay – A well trained dog should remain where his or her owner commands, so Stay is an important command in dog training. (The Stay command is not used by all dog trainers. Some are of the view that the command to Sit means “Sit, and stay there until you’re given another command” – this makes a lot of sense. But many people do like to use the Stay command).

Heel – it is important that any dog learn to walk beside its owner on a loose lead, neither pulling ahead nor lagging behind

Dog training does much more than just create an obedient, willing companion. Training your dog properly actually strengthens the bond that already exists between dog and owner. Dogs are pack animals, and they look to their pack leader to tell them what to do. The key to successful dog training is to set yourself up as that pack leader.

Establishing yourself as pack leader is a very important concept for any potential dog trainer to understand. There is only one leader in every pack of dogs, and the owner must establish him or herself as the dominant animal. Failure to do so leads to all manner of behavior problems.

A properly trained dog will respond properly to all the owner’s commands, and will not display anxiety, displeasure or confusion. A good dog training program will focus on allowing the dog to learn just what is expected of it, and will use positive reinforcement to reward desired behaviors.

In addition to making the dog a good member of the community, obedience training is a great way to fulfill some of the dog’s own needs, including the need for exercise, the security that comes with knowing what is expected of it, a feeling of accomplishment and a good working relationship with its handler. Dog training gives the dog an important job to do, and an important goal to reach.

Giving the dog a job is more important than you may think. Dogs were originally bred by humans to do important work, such as herding sheep, guarding property and protecting people. Many dogs today have no important job to do, and this can often lead to boredom and neurotic behavior.

Basic obedience training, and ongoing training sessions, provide the dog with an important job to do. This is especially important for high energy breeds like German shepherds and border collies. Training sessions are a great way for these high energy dogs to use up their extra energy and simply to enjoy themselves.

Incorporating playtime into your dog training sessions is a great way to prevent both yourself and your dog from becoming bored. Playing with your dog helps to strengthen the all important bond between you – the pack leader – and your dog.

The Basics of German Shepherd Aggression

German shepherd aggression can be caused by many things.  This aggression could be caused by a dominance related issue between you and the dog, or it might be a trigger that was never properly dealt with from puppyhood – for example, an attack from some other dog.  Whatever might be causing your german shepherd’s aggression,  you need to address it as soon as possible.

Dog aggression can start as young as 6 weeks of age, which is a very important time in puppy development where the dog should be socialized and given proper german shepherd obedience training. This period of socialization lasts until the dog turns 14 weeks of age and can extend even further.

You should not ever take puppies away from their litters prior to 8 weeks old. Never use harsh discipline with the puppy between 8 and 10 weeks and make sure the dog is very gently treated in that time. Hitting, yelling or other harsh punishments at a young age can breed german shepherd aggression over time. A dog needs to have been properly socialized with people and other dogs by the time he reached 14 weeks to avoid any future aggression issues.

Actual aggression can be triggered by any number of factors. Heredity and genetic material, for example, are factors – as certain breeds are just more aggressive – but that isn’t necessarily a given rule. Some dogs if they have not been spayed or neutered can also be naturally more aggressive.

When it comes right down to it though, the main factor in german shepherd aggression is the environment they are raised in. A dog that has poor living conditions, harsh masters, no socialization, or that has been frightened or attacked by another dog is far more likely to be aggressive as it ages.

Another factor in aggression is the need dogs have to establish pack orders. Biting, posturing, and other aggressive tendencies are often the result of a dog testing for dominance. You must absolutely create your role as a dominant leader when the dog is young and continue that position through the dog’s lifespan so it cannot take over your household.

Your dog may show aggressive behavior after 14 months, when it is sexually mature.  In this case you should deal with the problem right away. First, make sure you have established yourself as the pack leader. Don’t reward your dog for aggressive behavior, even if it is scared (especially in this case).

Perhaps your dog is defensive-aggressive, in which case they might attack in fear. Dogs like this typically have not been socialized right. Absolutely keep them away from small children, and attend training and behavior sessions that will help the dog adjust to new environments.

German shepherd aggression is a huge problem that many owners have, but it can always be controlled even if the dog is older. If the time comes where your dog’s aggression becomes violent, you may need to hire a professional to intervene so no one gets hurt, and your dog is not held responsible for what is just natural to it.

Labrador retriever Puppy Training ? The Basics of Training

September 4th, 2010

Everyone who owns a Labrador retriever puppy knows training them is the very first thing you should do when you get your puppy. You may want to get your puppy professionally trained, but let’s face it, unless you are rolling in dough, you may want to consider training them yourself. Labrador retriever puppy training is not hard to do, and while saving you money, you will also bond with your puppy which is very important to do when they are young.

If you’re wondering where you should start, I recommend you start with house training. If your puppy is going to be living in your home, and in America alone 90% of our dogs do, then you will need to make sure your lab has good house manners. Labradors are a very loyal breed of dog and will listen to you well which makes training them a breeze… sometimes. Nevertheless, it still takes patients from you the trainer but if you set a routine and stick to it, you should have no problems.

Obedience training should also be on your list of things to teach your Labrador. After all, you don’t want your lab to grow up to be a big bully, jumping on guests, barking all night, it really becomes a pain. The easiest solution is to train them when they are young. It’s never too early to start training your lab; unless they are younger than 8 weeks, if that’s the case you may want to wait.

The Labrador retriever was bred to be a hunting dog retrieving game from the water and bringing it back to the hunter, so getting along with people is in their nature making them a great family dog. They do however require exercise regularly though; otherwise they may become bored and want to act out. Swimming is the best way to keep your puppy in shape. It’s easy on their delicate joints and will give them a good workout.

Exercise can be a bad thing to. While your puppy is still less than 18 months of age, the bones and joints in their legs are not yet fully developed. If they are taken for long walks on hard surfaces like a road, these joints may become damaged causing problems later like arthritis. Keeping this in mind is important and a good rule of thumb is to exercise your lab only 10 minutes a day until they get a little older.

As you can see Labradors make great pets… but you already knew that. While training them is important to do, don’t forget to spend some quality time with your puppy. As I mentioned before, bonding with your lab early on is important to do, your lab will respect you and listen to you better, and if you keep it up, you will have the dog you always wanted in no time.

The Basics of Caring for a Beagle Puppy

April 29th, 2010

The beagle can be a delightful breed. They are adorable, small dogs, and beagle personalities make great pets if they are disciplined and well taken care of. If you fail to train and take good care of your dog, they can also be difficult. Caring for a beagle will be rewarding, however, if you are willing to learn a bit about the breed and make some effort.

In order to properly groom the pet, you will need to come to terms with the fact that regular grooming is required. Even though the breed has relatively short hair, you should brush it about once a week. This breed does shed a little, and doing this will also remove dirt and prevent an odor. Their ears also need care as well. Check the ears and clean them with a cotton ball about every other week. They can get dirty (and irritated) and develop an odor as well. You don’t need to bathe often, maybe once a month.

Beagles tend to be voracious eaters, and if you’re not careful, obesity could be a big problem for your beagle. Don’t feed your beagle from the table. Keep with dry dog food instead. You will also need to exercise your dog regularly. If you plan on getting a beagle, be ready to take the dog out at least once a day—maybe twice.

Dog training beagle puppies is a huge step in making sure your puppy grows into a well-minding dog. Although a friendly breed, the beagle can be stubborn (especially when it comes to looking for food). Be very consistent in your discipline and don’t slack off. Try to use positive correction as opposed to negative punishment. If you have small children, be careful, as they tend to nip or bite if provoked.

Beagles tend to live to the ripe old age of around 12 – 15 years, so you can look forward to several years of companionship with this breed. If you take care of your beagle properly, you are sure to make those years a very happy time full of lots of love and funny beagle antics.

If you are looking to find beagles for sale, the internet is a great place to start. You may also find some great deals by looking in the classifieds section of your local newspaper. Take care in choosing your pet and make sure that the breeder is reputable.
