Most people like cuddly puppies and grown-up dogs. But before you welcome a new dog into your home, there are some things you need to think through to be sure both you and your new best friend are happy and healthy.

Remember that dogs, no matter what they are today, were predators in the past. Wolves, hyenas, dingoes, and foxes are carnivorous creatures who hunt to survive. Dogs were most likely domesticated from their wolf ancestors from 20,000 to 15,000 years ago. In fact, the many dog breeds have only proliferated in the last 200-300 years. Before that, a few breeds existed to meet their masters’ needs for work.

When you own a dog, remember that the wolf is somewhere in there hiding. Depending on its breed and the way you treat it, that wolf could surprise you with a quick snip or a more vicious attack. Careful selection and training of your dog will assure that your best friend remains a best friend.

Before you select a dog, do your homework. Become familiar with dog breeds and personality traits, and compare these to your personal reasons for having a dog. Do you want a cute, cuddly friend to dress up and carry around? Do you want a champion at dog agility competitions or a champion show dog? Do you want a companion for your children? Or do you want a body guard and home protector? Do you need support to cope with a disability?

Each breed has characteristics that indicate what your life with your new friend will be like. If you aren’t very patient or don’t like a lot of noise, you probably shouldn’t adopt a small, energetic dog with lots of demands for attention. If you want an affectionate loyal companion, you might want to consider a Golden or Labrador Retriever or a Collie. If you want to protect your property, you might take a look at a German Shepherd, a Rottweiler, or a Doberman Pincher.

If your household includes young children, your choice should be a careful one. Your new dog will have to be patient and tolerate with kindness having its tail pulled, being jumped on, and engaged in wrestling for hours on end. Bulldogs, American Eskimo dogs, Beagles, Retrievers, Setters, Sheepdogs, and many Terriers are among the many breeds good with children.

Want a dog you can dress up and put in cute clothes? Then look for a dog that has plenty of hair (for those fancy hair-dos) and is small enough to carry around. “Designer dogs” like Poodles, Yorkies and Westies, Bichon Frises, Pomeranians, and the more exotic Shih Tzu are excellent candidates for this.

If you’re looking for protection, be sure to look at breeds that aren’t too friendly to strangers. Great Danes are huge and intimidating, but they’re likely to fall in love with the first burglar they meet! Bulldogs are another breed that look fierce but come out kissing. German Shepherds are probably the most familiar and trainable guard dogs. Other breeds also protect your home and family: Rottweilers, Boxers, Doberman Pinchers, and Giant Schnauzers are among them.

There are a few breeds that were created for their ferociousness. Rottweilers and Pit Bull Terriers are notorious for vicious attacks. So if you are considering these breeds, you must be very clear about what to expect and very careful in training a well-behaved dog.

When you decide to bring a dog into your home, you need to be educated about what you need, what you want, and what breed will most likely fulfill your goals. When you adopt a dog, you are adding a member to your family – one for which you will be responsible for a lifetime. You should be committed to working through all the behavioral and training kinks and providing a stable, loving home. You’ll not only have to train your dog, but you’ll have to be trained in how to handle that dog.

A final note: Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, says, “There are no bad dogs. Only bad dog owners.” No matter what breed you bring into your home, in the end, you are the one responsible for your dog’s behavior. Learn all you can about the dog you hope to own, and learn all you can about yourself as a pack leader. Even the feared Pit Bull is a sweet loving dog in the right hands.

No matter what breed you think you want, you should know about the specific dog’s parentage, personal history, and temperament before making the commitment to be his lifetime caretaker and friend.

Today Chihuahuas are the smallest breed of dog recognized by the American Kennel Club. Because of their small size when caring for Chihuahuas you have to careful when you are bathing them. Since they have such a small body mass, they have trouble maintaining their body heat when wet, so as soon as you get done bathing them be sure to thoroughly dry them off with some towels.

Also after bathing them it is a good time to trim their toenails. After bathing them their toenails are softer than normal. The best way to trim a Chihuahua’s toenails are with a guillotine type toenail clippers. You can get this type of clipper from most pet stores. Also while trimming dog nails you will want to have a bottle of Kwik Stop powder available in case you trim too far back and hit the quick. The quick is an area of the toenail where there is the blood supply to the nail. If you cut into the quick there will be bleeding. By directly applying the Quick Stop powder you can stop the bleeding rapidly.

When you first get your Chihuahua it is also a good idea to pet proof your house. To start this, survey your house, garage, and yard for anything you think might be a danger for your dog. Wrap electrical cords or hide them out of the way. Cleaners and chemicals should be stored in a closed cabinet. Plants that are toxic to dogs should be placed in an area where the dogs cannot reach them. Remember Chihuahuas are very curious animals and are constantly exploring their environment, so be proactive when pet proofing your house.

Also when caring for Chihuahuas, once a month it is a good idea to give them a quick little physical exam. You don’t have to be a veterinarian to be able to do a rudimentary physical exam. Start at the head and examine the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth for signs of redness or drainage, which could be signs of infection. Run your hands all over the body to check for any lumps or masses. By doing this simple little physical exam every month you will learn a lot more about your Chihuahua.

Chihuahuas may be one of the oldest breeds of dogs but they are also one of the most delicate despite their temperament. Take caution when caring for Chihuahuas and they can live a long healthy life.

Starting when your puppy is very young, often 8 weeks, or the day you bring him home for the first time is the best time to start basic training. You might want to show him around a bit and get him used to the place he will be living, but after that you will begin training.

A good place to start is by teaching your puppy his name. It may take a while for him to get the hang of it, but most labs learn very quickly and it really shouldn’t take more than a few days if you are consistent with it. Remember that treats and praise work very well and you should always use them when training your puppy.

Keeping your puppy off your furniture is something you should teach early on also. Think of it this way, if you let your puppy climb up on your couch with you to watch TV, he will still think it is ok to do when he is bigger and weighs a lot more. It will be harder to train your dog to stay off your couch then to never let it happen in the first place. If you are ok with this then that’s ok to, but I know most people are not.

Feeding your puppy from the table is also not a good idea. When your puppy grows up he will be a beggar and wait for you to throw him some food. This is not always a bad thing but it can get very annoying when you have company.

Obedience training can be a handful at first, but as your puppy learns what he can and cannot do things will get easier. One of the great joys of owning a Labrador I think is the training you give them. You are the master and they will learn whatever you teach them.

You still need to be able to communicate with them effectively however but a Labrador retriever is really an easy dog to train when it comes to obedience training, and as long as you train him the right way, you will have a very obedient dog when he grows up.

There are three sizes of Dachshunds ?standard, miniature and kaninchen.  A fully grown standard Dachshund will weigh between 16 and 28 pounds, a miniature dog will weigh about eleven pounds , but the kaninchen variety is the smallest weighing between 8 and 10 pounds. They also come in three coat varieties ?smooth, long-haired and wire-haired. Of these the wire-haired Dachshunds are the least common. The coats can be almost any color, in either a solid color or two colors.

These are playful and active dogs, well suited for families with children. They love to chase objects and birds and can be challenging to train. They love to dig holes when outside, so if you have a garden in which you keep the dog or let it play, be prepared to find lots of holes.  They become really attached to their owners and with their loud bark, they make great watchdogs. They are good dogs with visitors because they will not jump on them. In fact they will appear to be afraid when strangers come to call, which could result in a period of barking. They do not like to be left alone and will whine when they do not have company.

Some of the health problems associated with this dog breed include spinal problems. It is important to take care when feeding the dog because if you allow it to become overweight, this will make the spinal problems worse. They should not be encouraged to jump or to climb stairs because of the stress this puts on the spine. Another common health problem in Dachshunds is displacement of the kneecap, called luxating patella.  You will see if your dog does have this condition quite early as it manifests itself before the dog is six months old.

Training a Dachshund requires time, patience and practice. This breed is known for its independent streak. You should keep the training sessions short ?only about 5 minutes at a time in 2 or 3 repetitions a day. Giving the dog treats is an excellent training method to use because it keeps the dog interested in what is happening. Although it is easier to train a puppy, you can also achieve positive results with an adult Dachshund. They love praise and when you heap praises on your dog, you will have a loyal devoted companion. From the age of 4 months on, the dog will try to assert itself as the leader of the pack. It is during this time that you have to be assertive in letting the dog know who is boss of the household. If you do not, you will have problems with the puppy that will extend into adulthood. Training an adult Dachshund requires different methods, such as incentives and dog training equipment.
