Surpising And Important Information About Dog Aggression

WHY ARE SOME DOGS MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN OTHERS?

There are some dog breeds that were actually bred to be aggressive using selective breeding practices. Some dog breeds were originally bred to be fighting dogs such as the Akita dog breed while others may have been bred to be fierce guard dogs. Dogs such as the German Shepherd or Doberman are breeds that are prone to loyalty and protectiveness. This instinct can be tapped into to train these dogs to become fierce watchdogs.

Every dog is unique regardless of his or her breed. You can meet a kind and gentle Rottweiler and you can also meet a mean and fierce Poodle. The way that a dog behaves does not only depend on bloodlines but just as much on how the dog was raised.

A dog can be conditioned to be fierce through abuse. Some of the training practices to train dogs to be guard dogs are actually quite abusive. A dog that is scared and fearing for its safety will naturally tend to attack. Attacking a dog physically will provoke it.

While it is true that starting off with a breed which is known to have a tendency towards aggression makes it more likely that a dog will be aggressive, there are also dogs that come from aggressive lineage but that have always been treated well and are good-natured.

DOG AGGRESSION AND CHILDREN

Many studies have been done on children being attacked by dogs. While the researchers may have set out wanting to know which breed of dog was the most responsible for attacks on children, what they have found is that while the breed of dog is not consistent in terms of attacks, what is consistent is the age of the children. Most studies have found that the majority of dog bites and vicious dog attacks occur against children between the ages of five and nine.

Dogs are pack animals with a strong social hierarchy. The one who feeds and gives instruction in a household is usually an adult. A pet dog will equate this behavior from this adult as similar to the behavior of the Alpha dog in the pack. Therefore a dog is less likely to attack his master.

Young children may be seen as peers that can be dominated so that the dog can get ahead in the hierarchy. A dog which shows domination tendencies towards children such as humping them should not be left unattended with children because signs of trying to dominate children could be a signal that this dog could become aggressive with this child.

A dog who humps adult visitors may be simply trying to show that in this house he or she is above the visitor in the hierarchy but he will not necessarily bite. Perhaps children under the age of five are not left unattended with dogs as often as children between the ages of five and nine and this may explain why there are more incidences with children over the age of five.

It has been found that three out of four dog attacks against children are by the family’s own pet. Something else which people may find equally shocking is that friendly lovable dogs like Golden Retrievers have as many incidences attacking children as other breeds. One conclusion that has been made from this is that the more popular a breed is, the more chances there are that dog bites will come from this breed purely because of the numbers.

FATAL DOG ATTACKS

While all dog breeds may become aggressive in certain circumstances, the number one dog breed for causing fatalities is the Pit Bull Terrier. The Rottweiler comes in second. The problem of fatal dog attacks increases every year as these two breeds have become more popular. For this reason it is important for governments to make decisions on the conditions in which these breeds are allowed to co-exist with humans.

Some cities and countries such as Denmark, Holland and Norway have banned Pit Bull Terriers completely. Others say that this does not address the problem of dog aggression because Pit Bull Terriers are not the only dogs attacking, maiming and killing children. One thing that is certain is that a solution needs to be found to prevent such horrifying and meaningless deaths. At present, how to deal with dog aggression is a widely debated topic all over the world.

The Basics of German Shepherd Aggression

German shepherd aggression can be caused by many things.  This aggression could be caused by a dominance related issue between you and the dog, or it might be a trigger that was never properly dealt with from puppyhood – for example, an attack from some other dog.  Whatever might be causing your german shepherd’s aggression,  you need to address it as soon as possible.

Dog aggression can start as young as 6 weeks of age, which is a very important time in puppy development where the dog should be socialized and given proper german shepherd obedience training. This period of socialization lasts until the dog turns 14 weeks of age and can extend even further.

You should not ever take puppies away from their litters prior to 8 weeks old. Never use harsh discipline with the puppy between 8 and 10 weeks and make sure the dog is very gently treated in that time. Hitting, yelling or other harsh punishments at a young age can breed german shepherd aggression over time. A dog needs to have been properly socialized with people and other dogs by the time he reached 14 weeks to avoid any future aggression issues.

Actual aggression can be triggered by any number of factors. Heredity and genetic material, for example, are factors – as certain breeds are just more aggressive – but that isn’t necessarily a given rule. Some dogs if they have not been spayed or neutered can also be naturally more aggressive.

When it comes right down to it though, the main factor in german shepherd aggression is the environment they are raised in. A dog that has poor living conditions, harsh masters, no socialization, or that has been frightened or attacked by another dog is far more likely to be aggressive as it ages.

Another factor in aggression is the need dogs have to establish pack orders. Biting, posturing, and other aggressive tendencies are often the result of a dog testing for dominance. You must absolutely create your role as a dominant leader when the dog is young and continue that position through the dog’s lifespan so it cannot take over your household.

Your dog may show aggressive behavior after 14 months, when it is sexually mature.  In this case you should deal with the problem right away. First, make sure you have established yourself as the pack leader. Don’t reward your dog for aggressive behavior, even if it is scared (especially in this case).

Perhaps your dog is defensive-aggressive, in which case they might attack in fear. Dogs like this typically have not been socialized right. Absolutely keep them away from small children, and attend training and behavior sessions that will help the dog adjust to new environments.

German shepherd aggression is a huge problem that many owners have, but it can always be controlled even if the dog is older. If the time comes where your dog’s aggression becomes violent, you may need to hire a professional to intervene so no one gets hurt, and your dog is not held responsible for what is just natural to it.

While German Shepherds may not inspire the ill-placed fear of such breeds as Rottweilers and Pit Bulls, they do land on many banned breed lists.

In fact, it is more of a reputation of being aggressive that German Shepherds have acquired. Owners of these dogs will mostly deny that German Shepherd aggression is a concern, but, unfortunately, the number of incidents of these dogs attacking people and other dogs can’t be ignored. However, whilst genetics are a factor, the biggest problem is mis-training, or even no training, by their owners.

It would be wrong to think that this trait of inappropriate aggressive behavior is displayed by all, or even most, German Shepherds. It is wholly unfair to let the misdemeanours of the minority result in the entire breed being labeled as “dangerous” or “aggressive”. Still, all owners of these dogs should be aware that it may potentially be a problem and, as such, should learn about and try to recognize the signs of German shepherd aggression.

Aggression can take many forms. Some German Shepherds will be aggressive only towards other animals. Some will only become aggressive if a person or animal approaches them while they are eating. Others act aggressively towards humans – mostly strangers, but in some cases even towards members of the family of the household that they are living in.

Don’t discount even minor forms of aggression, say to a cat or the postman, because these could easily escalate into something more serious. At the first sign of aggression being displayed, or even before this, you need to embark on a course of proper training. Not only could is save injury to other people and animals, it could also save your own dog’s life.

Simply yelling at or hitting your dog when it acts aggressively is a faulty approach to take.In almost every case, this is only going to make the behavior worse.By doing so, you are also placing yourself and those around you at immediate risk – it is quite possible that your dog will fight back on being hit and will starting biting and leaping at those nearest to it.

Obedience training is a much better solution for dealing with German shepherd aggression. It is best to begin at a young age before any bad habits are formed, however, no matter the age of your dog, obedience training remains the best option.

Dog Owners Guide : German Shepherd Aggression

October 26th, 2010

It is wholly unfair to let the misdemeanours of the minority result in the entire breed being labeled as “dangerous” or “aggressive”.That being said, it is vital for owners to learn to recognize the signs of German Shepherd aggression, so that they can immediately begin to work to bring them under control.

Aggression can take many forms. Some German Shepherds only act aggressively towards other dogs. Some will display aggression only if they are approached whilst they are chewing a bone or eating. Others are aggressive toward strangers, and others even show aggression to some human members of the household in which they live.

Don’t discount even minor forms of aggression, say to a cat or the postman, because these could easily escalate into something more serious. If you do notice signs of aggression in your dog, proper training and handling can turn the behavior around and, potentially, save your dog’s life.

Some owners make the mistake of yelling at or hitting their German Shepherd when he displays aggressive behavior. For the most part, this makes the overall situation worse, as the dog becomes less trusting of humans.By doing so, you are also placing yourself and those around you at immediate risk – it is quite possible that your dog will fight back on being hit and will starting biting and leaping at those nearest to it.

Obedience training is a much better solution for dealing with German shepherd aggression. The best results are seen with younger dogs, but don’t let the age of your dog put you off from trying it at any time. Even old dogs can learn to be obedient, it just takes a little more time.

You can learn a lot about obedience training through online resources. They will tell you how to read the signals that dogs give off and how to get them to obey your voice commands. You will be able to find general information on the topic, and also specifics for each breed. It’s also increasing common to be able to find videos on obedience dog training too, which can really help your understanding of it.

So, online information and videos are the best place to start, and these might be enough in themselves; however, there is also the option of taking your dog to professional dog obedience classes. This are fairly widespread, so you should be able to find one near to you.

Curbing Fear-Based Aggression In Yorkshire Terriers

September 4th, 2010

Yorkshire Terriers being so small, they often get scared by objects that are larger than them. And, let’s face it, most objects are larger than them. Fear-based aggression is a problem with many small breeds for this reason, but it can be easily corrected with proper and frequent socialization.

When you first get your new Yorkshire Terrier puppy, you will want to gradually introduce him or her to more and more things that he or she is likely to interact with later on on life. This includes other people, small children, dogs and other species of animal, new terrain, various environments, and all the objects that make noise in your home and neighborhood. It is important to introduce your new Yorkie to a variety of these things slowly, as too much at one time can overwhelm them and force your socialization attempt to backfire.

The easiest method to begin socializing is in your own home. If you have roommates, children, or other pets, introducing your Yorkie to them within the first week of bringing them home is ideal. Always make sure you are present when first introducing your puppy to new people or animals, for his or her safety and the safety of the others involved. Keeping your Yorkshire Terrier on a leash for these first introductions is always best, in the event that he or she gets scared and tries to run away, or even if he or she gets too excited and needs to calm down.

After your Yorkshire Terrier is used to all the interesting new friends he or she has made in your home, you can move on to other obstacles. Take your Yorkie for a walk with your neighbor and their dog, or invite company with their own pets over to interact with you both. Playing with another person’s dog in front of your Yorkie will help indicate that the animal is also safe for them to play with, as well as helping curb jealousy issues that may arise in the future.

You will also want to get your Yorkie used to walking on different types of terrain as they are present in your neighborhood or the areas in which he or she may be spending time with you. Being such a tiny dog, the difference between walking on gravel and walking on grass can be vast and scary at first. It is important that your dog not be fearful of walking across streets, as a dog pulling the opposite way when you’re trying to cross at the walk signal can be dangerous!

After your Yorkie puppy has aged a bit, you can explore other options like dog parks or doggie playgroups. Since Yorkshire Terriers are so tiny, it is not a good idea to pursue interaction with large dogs, especially off leash, until they are at least six months old.

Remember, socialization may seem like a chore at first, but it will help curb many difficult issues down the road. Besides, it’s a wonderful way for you and your new puppy to spend time together and create an unbreakable bond!

German Shepherd Training – 8 Tips on Dealing With Aggression

July 4th, 2010

In this article I would like to discuss the basics of German Shepherd training, specifically, dealing with aggression in this particular breed. Since the German Shepherd is an athletic dog often times used in protection roles, many feel that they are prone to aggression. This is simply not true.

Let’s get to the basics of training an aggressive German Shepherd:

• Canines need to understand that you are the alpha dog in the house. German Shepherds are no different. From day 1 of owning them, your dog should view you as alpha. If you are well into your relationship with your German Shepherd and have not established the alpha role, you may experience some resistance.

• Humiliation, abuse, and corporal punishment have no place when dealing with aggressive behavior. A mild shake by the scruff of the neck to emphasize the rules is typically enough.

• Reward him for behaving calmly with food treats, praise, and petting.

• It is essential to reward calm and good behavior during training. This is positive reinforcement for the Shepherd, and positive reinforcement breeds more good behavior.

• All members of your family should understand the idea of “alpha dog”; and dog psychology and socialization. When you’re not around, the last thing you want is for your training to be deconstructed.

• Guarding breeds such as German Shepherds need special emphasis on socialization. Make sure he has plenty of interactive with humans and other dogs throughout his life.

• Shepherds, as with all dogs, need exercise. Lack of exercise is a major cause of aggressive behavior in canines, German Shepherds are no different. Take your Shepherd jogging, running alongside you as you bike or rollerblade, hiking, etc. Even regular games of fetch will benefit. Consistent exercise is key, strive for at least a 45 minute walk per day.

• Take your Shepherd to typical obedience classes and get them to at least an intermediate level. His mind should be stimulated and occupied.

Being the owner, your dog is your responsibility, and training your dog falls on your shoulders. Training, however, shouldn’t be looked at as a burden. German Shepherd training is a mutually beneficial process, and can lead to years of joy with your new best friend.
