How to Be Sure a Dachshund Is the Dog for You?

May 26th, 2010

I went the the animal shelter yesterday to look at the dogs. I found a wonderful little dachshund named Clyde. His legs are a bit longer than most dachshunds, but he is gorgeous! I really like him, and feel sorry for him. He went through three homes before being dumped at the shelter. I’m considering adopting him, but how do I know that a Dachshund would be a good match for me? I keep hearing how important it is to choose the correct breed, and I don’t want to make a mistake. Can anyone help me with this?

Hello, you seem like a great future dog trainer, I think dachshunds are great dogs, it doesn’t matter if he has long legs, as long as he is a dachshund, but maybe his ancestor was a mixed breed, but still, he is mostly dachshund, try these sites to learn more about this cool, ‘hot’ dog…=) Also, maybe it’s just that your dog is more of a unique dachshund, but hey, a dog, is a dog right. These sites will tell you what you need to know about them and how their life style is, like lots or little exercise, or tons of grooming, or hardly any grooming, plus does he like being around you? Do you think you have enough money? Can you handle his size? How will you house train him? You can search on many pet sites, and here are few of them, hope they helped! Also poor doggy, dumped 3 times, is quite harsh, well if you do decide to buy him, make his life the best as ever! LoL! =) If you were wondering if these sites are safe, well they are, dont worry!

I’m a total doxie person – note the moniker! Don’t take Clyde just because you feel sorry for him. Ask the shelter folks if they know why he has been dumped 3 times!! Does he have potty-training issues? Aggressive with other dogs or kids? A Barker? These are common “problems” with Dachshunds but often can be moderated with proper training. Dachshunds definitely do bark so if you can’t stand a little noise – they are not the dog for you. There is a difference between aggressive and un/or under socialized behavior — see if you can find out. But, I think Dachshunds are the best of dogs!! Very lovable, willing to be couch potatoes one moment and then will walk miles with you the next. Great snugglers in bed. Playful and spirited. Remember just because Dachshunds are small does not mean that they do not need training — THEY DO!! – they can be very willful and naughty (like playing keep away with the car keys when I’m late for an appointment!!) Hopefully Clyde just had a run of bad luck with his previous owners — and you will be his forever home!! Let us know what happens!

Dachshunds are great little dogs, but they can be stubborn, training them takes alot of patience and love. They are also known for being great little escape artists when it comes to digging out of the yard. They were bred to hunt badgers, so they do have astrong prey drive. They love to chase anything that runs, and need to in a fenced yard to keep them from chasing things in the street, the neighbors cat..
If you are willing to put in the time and effort into the little guy, you’ll have a great pet for life!
